@fondizzie Russia wasnt the only one with troops in Europe after WW2. Stalin was a ruthless dictator but Western powers had as much to do with Cold War as Russians did. Truman and Eisenhover were so afraid of communism and wanted to stop its spread at costs to the point where they created a policy of preventive strikes and regime manipulation all over the world that sparked the cold war more than anything Russians did.

Russia is a powerful state, one of the strongest in history, but the US will always be their larger adversary. The Soviet Union was able to compete militarily with the US, but the Russian Federation is not the Soviet Union.

@fondizzie Russia wasnt the only one with troops in Europe after WW2. Stalin was a ruthless dictator but Western powers had as much to do with Cold War as Russians did. Truman and Eisenhover were so afraid of communism and wanted to stop its spread at costs to the point where they created a policy of preventive strikes and regime manipulation all over the world that sparked the cold war more than anything Russians did.

@madhammudeux I dont blame the people but media and government have overblown it in the worst way. You are forgetting that most of Soviet Union was destroyed in WW2. Soviets were more worried about rebuilding their own cities and industry than they were about expanding at that time. In their minds Eastern block was there for their own protection from another invasion.

actually, the Soviet Union were more bankrupt and pretty weak- if you watch part 2, you'll find out that the Soviets took machinery, equipment etc to rebuild the soviet union- and the US weren't bankrupt or exhausted because they dished out billions in the Marshall Plan, and the 1949 Berlin Blockade should've been the last straw...

The conclusion: Even with all the allied combined armies and atomic bombs, it was not possible to drive the Russians back to the Soviet Union at the time. It will only have begun WWIII and would have lasted for decades.

If Western Europe fell to the Russians, they would have gained more allies to fight us and we could not led it happen, which is why the CIA killed the supposed communist leaders around the world throughout the Cold War.
If U.S. and NATO went head to head to the USSR and it's allies, it would lead to a nuclear war. That's why Cold War was nothing but a play game compare to what we had now.

@kaykko True. I think overall the world is more stable. Interlinked economies makes it more difficult for major powers to fight each other without screwing themselves over. Also the terrorists keep the major powers busy so that they don't get bored and want to start bigger fights. It is more stable, but if world war breaks out again then its going to get nasty really quickly. The Russia/China combination is making me a bit nervous though.

Theres a lot of diplomatic saber-rattling, but you dont see any of the top 5 powerfull countries about to invade each other, although there are likely some proxy wars going on, but yeah, the economies are looking friggin nasty. All the debt that has been building up. Countries will need to pay what is owed or it might be cheaper to invade the country you owe the money to and write off the debt yourself :)

It wasn't more stable at all.

China is only communist by name and its economy is pretty much capitalist today. In fact, they took the worst aspects of capitalism and communism and mixed them together.
