My 2nd cousin, Robert Walters was kept there also. He was the bombardier in a B17, shot down on his 13th mission. I remember him recounting the story to me of his plane exploding, knocking him unconscious and waking up falling from the sky. He also recounted a soldier who was shot in the head by German guards for sticking his head out of a window during an air raid.
My dad, Dick Kenyon, was also in Stalag Luft 1 North 1, and I believe is in this video. He was a P-51 Mustang pilot shot down over Rastede, Germany. In 2000 we went back there, found parts of his plane "Bad Penny", retraced his route as a captive. I don't have a list of name anymore of his roommates. If anyone recognizes his name, please comment?
thank you for this. I was really excited and checked but your Father was indeed there with a Phil Wescott. They were in North One compound, my dad was in West. But nice to make contact and amazing to think they may have chatted!
2nd Lt. Emmett Anthony Lawless, Jr (1/7/23-2/21/11), B-17 Navigator in the US Army Air Corp's 8th Bomber Command, was held at Stalag Luft 1 from approx 8/10/44 until Liberation during the first week of May, 1944.
You can listen on YouTube to his recorded account of capture, prison life and liberation by searching "Emmett A Lawless"- two segments.
My father (Freddie Westcott) was a pilot who was a POW in Stalag Luft 1 in Barth. (He died in 83). I have his diary and address book with names of people who were there..I'd love to see if any of them are around..not sure how I go about it. Thank you for uploading this. Are there any others?
My father was also at Stalag Luft 1 and he had a roommate in the camp last name Westcott. My father believes his first name was Phil (not Fred) . Is his name listed? Loren White

Very interesting.. I live around the corner from Boxted Air Station, where both Zemke and Gabby Gabresky flew from.. I've walked the length of the runways many a time.. :)
My "Uncle" Tom Whitehead was a prisoner in Stalag Luft 1 from April 1943 until liberation. He was a rear gunner with the RAF but was flying as a stand in for a RCAF crew when they were shot down over Duisberg on April 8, 1943. The other crew members were Pilot Officer R M Buckham RCAF
Pilot Officer G C Fletcher
Sergeant J D Fraser
Nicholas Weber Rodin
If you have a higher resolution version I'd love to see it.
The last combat missionn of the 8th air force was on 25 April 1945. the war ended and the Russians didn't give the release of American airmen POWs a high prioity so on the 12, 12, 14 of May, 91`st Bomb Group B-17s went in and got them out. This mission was called the "revival" mission.

I just sent this to my friend, Don Barton who was evacuated then. HE IS ALIVE AND WELL.
Is this footage from the national archives? Can it be retrieved from the Library of Congress?

My uncle was in Stalag Luft 1. He was a pilot. My father said he was never the same man he was before he left.

Would you please be able to send me a copy of this footage. My grandpa took place in this evacuation.
I have many pieces of history from this era, but none in video footage.
Many thanks
