Gamefox120: Have you ever been in a fight? I'll tell you, from experience, sometimes you ignore technique to get a killing stroke or survive. It is a dangerous gamble, though. You could leave yourself open for a counter-attack and fall prey to a technical finish by the opponent. My only point is that Bond is NOT a fencer and was fighting on instinct.
@gamefox120 ill tell you one thing though cuz ive done fencing and kendo before but i just got sick of them because they make you fight in their specific way i know its because its the better way to use the specific sword but theres hardly any free style with it which i found boring especialy in kendo i hated the way you have to score by hiting them shouting where you hit them and stomping your foot exactly at the same time which is weird cuz if you dont get it perfect you dont score
@leviethen Kendo and modern fencing are martial sports.
not martial arts. If you face off against somebody with the rules of etiquette in mind as a part of your fallback training then you will be vulnerable, especially if your opponents knows the rules of your sword sport's scoring system. historical sword training is much different. you bring up a good point how sword fighting has lost a lot of its practical use due to modern versions clouding the real history.
@Gamefox120: They were fighting for survival. I don't think they were considering proper technique when they were thinking, "Don't die! Don't die!!" It's a movie and has to look cool. =)
thats why you train. and the way to train is in proper technique so it becomes second nature ,proper technique is proper because it deals with survival. knowing how to block and parry the right way and recognizing your opponent's failure to grasp a principle defensive or offensive is they way to win. read Talhoffer's manuals on sword strategy and this you will find.
Katanas cant cut through just ANYthing, they are not lightsabers, toledo rapier blades of spain were some of the most durable and flexible weapons on earth.think about it why did the European blade get smaller and thinner if they could not take the shock of a larger hacking blade? the answer is that they could. watch Rob Roy perfect example.
and before you say that the katana is superior to all other blades, think about why japan could never conquer other lands...
@Mindaugas7100 no... because a rapier tapers to a point from the bottom up, and have a thick cruciform shape, it doesn't matter what angle he cut it at.
the kind of rapiers in this movie look like early 1800's to me and that means that they were designed for piercing thick wool coats meaning that they would have to be really
rigid at the swords tang. it would take a lot more than just one swing from a katana.
do you even own a sword that not made of stainless steel?
on another note this sword scene is not realistic anyway.
they both hit edge on edge, big no no. you block with the flat of the blade not the edge. if you don't you are going to have to deal with fatal cracks and nicks developing on your sword.
@gamefox120 Precisely. You don't go around banging your sword against a hard surface, no matter what kind of weapon it is. That is why a fighter's first priority should be to end it quickly, to avoid such damage. Even if this is not the case, you only should parry and never block directly with the sharp portion of the blade. Turn the enemy's weapon aside, not clash with it.
A sword is an expensive weapon to maintain. More, if well made, it can be a work of art.
so they go from using the epee to using sabres to using samurai sword then using conan the barbarian swords and end up being told off by a woman, and finally they handshake presumably for a cup of tea, WTF IS WRONG WITH THESE PPL??!!
damn i really want to learn how to sword fight. it's based on alot of instinct and i love that. there's also a level of simplicity you can't get with any other weapon be it bow and arrow or even a firearm.
@iknowhowtobenerd Swordplay is both a simple and very difficult art. The greatest of fighters with it are capable of amazing feats. Really though, there is a difference between real dueling and Hollywood's depiction - which is based more on drama.
I consider myself a skilled swordsman, but there are few chances for me to really show it off. From what I can tell you, it is exhilarating - but the injuries you will take (if you don't have protective gear) are painful.
The katana cutting a rapier in half is just a ridiculous bullshit cliché with no basis in reality whatsoever. The medieval sword coreography was totally ridiculous battery with no accuracy whatsoever to European Martial Arts.
The best part is that I just came from another fencing video where someone said: "We should do this, just with claymores" . Lo and behold, they start using claymores at one point, awesome coincidence, I think not.
What a shame, they were doing so well before when it was strictly foil fencing. Then the real fight starts and they immediately start in on the huge-ass swings and spin moves. I won't deny this was a damn good, intense fight scene, but I'm still waiting for the day I see combat that looks even remotely legitimate in a movie.
@Selryam616 - It wasn't foil fencing, it was epée, very different to foil - the piste is made of metal, so that what on a foil box would appear to be off target is on. Epée is whole body target.
Ugh, more actors swinging European longswords around like baseball bats. I'd expect a villain who stocks his house with weapons would know that German and Italian Longsword are subtle martial arts that require a great deal of control and precision. As far as James Bond goes it was pretty entertaining, it's just that if people see enough fight choreography they start to think it's the real thing.
@deathbyazure Are you a fencer? LOL, because it seems that most fencers would agree with you on this. I often hear that the most annoying part about teaching fencing to newcomers is that they expect to be fighting with swords like in the movies but then they come not to like it when they have to learn how to do it properly.
@belias360 Thanks, I'm very new to fencing, but love studying arms and armor. What I want to ask Hollywood is, "why not?" Actors' salaries are huge, special effects budgets are though the roof, why not physically and mentally train your actors to sword fight? I have seen movies like The Duelists and Rob Roy in which the actors got trained and the choreography is based on accurate fencing, but its still aggressive, emotional and riveting. It's hard work, but imho it improves the movie.
@deathbyazure Unfortunately, most people who watch films with swords couldn't tell the difference between fencing and kendo. Most have no appreciation for the skill and level of control it takes to truly tap into a swordsman's spirit.
This scene, while awesome, is still a perfect example of what not to do with a blade. Banging a longsword like they are towards the end against hard surfaces is a perfect way to ruin such a fine weapon. Swords need to be treated with care, not like flyswatters.
@NicholasGeschke They are trying to kill each other, I don't really think they care about ruining the swords. This scene was also choreographed by Bob Anderson, arguably the best swordsman in the entertainment industry for 60+ years.
I personally love this fight as it displays the brute force and blinding aggression of two people trying to dismember each other, not some relaxed quip-driven fight that everyone knows would never be the case in a real life-or-death situation.
@Raven05R6 Don't get me wrong, it is indeed awesome - and they cause realistic damage with their blades.
Maybe its just the pragmatist in me, or maybe its the swordsman spirit I mentioned - but you do want to at least try to keep from damaging your blade, that way it can be re-used.
A few things on katanas: A real katana in the hands of someone who even remotely knows how to use it can cut a man clean in half. It's a cutting weapon, not a hacking weapon. If someone gets a piece of you with one, you are in trouble. However, what you said about one being broken has some grounds. Katanas are meant to block with the flat of the sword: if you block with the blade, it's possible to break one. Or just ruin your edge :D
@kanyehater100 I agree, the sad thing is, this fight scene still doesn't come anywhere near the best. Don't get me wrong, though. I do like it quite a bit.
@kanyehater100 Why stop there in that comparison? It's already sad to know a kickass sword fighting scene like this outclasses EVERY SINGLE lightsaber duel in the Star Wars prequels & piece of crap Clone Wars series by having such an intense gravity of it's situation of characters who show no grace, no holding back, grit when needed, intimidating suspense, and revealing challenges of characterization exchanged amoung the two. Feels more humanized than just some CGI video game shit
@Gigamyt3 I was thinking that, but I wasn't going to say it because thinking of the Prequels gets me into such a rage I start foaming at the mouth and yelling obscenities at George Lucas.
@AgieSebie Yeah, but i'm pretty sure metal is stronger than flesh and a katana is just a curved piece of metal. Also katanas can't break rapiers so what's the chance of them breaking a sabre?
@MrMarkerSniffer A katana isn't just a curved piece of metal. The metal is one of the best in the world that takes three days of constant work to make. The metal is heated and repeatedly folded over to make it stronger.
A strong enough swing can damage or break european and chinese swords, but the katana gets dulled in the process.
@Dudin4tor The katana is just a curved piece of metal. It was fairly useless aswell because it was used for slashing which is pretty useless against armour and could only be used in two hands which is a retarded idea.
Heated and repeatedly folded? You mean the same thing Europeans had been doing since 700 BC.
No, katana's cant break through a european sword but european swords can bend katanas if swung hard enough taking little damage to itself.
You really need to be careful with swords - despite what Hollywood says, they really are quite a distance from indestructible. I doubt that even a genuine broadsword as they're using towards the end of the fight would withstand being repeatedly struck without some kind of serious denting.
lol not even a plasma cutter would cut though that sword like the other one did, its impossible in that situation for a sword to cut another one...takes away from the scene.
Hay, Hay, Hay, no se cual de los dos mejor pero como siempre prefiero a Toby no se por que no le dan mas papeles protagonicos "ES EL MEJOR Y MAS COMPLETO"
I love the ending the most. They go from fighting to kill each other to almost amicable appearances in a heartbeat. Heck, even looked affronted that Miranda would interrupt their fight.
An advice for any fencing beginner: please, do not forget to spin and turn your back to your opponent like James did, it'll definitely improve your game and skills.
You know what? Sword fights, North Korean hovercraft, DNA transplants. I miss that. The new movies, I don't know, they're an overreaction. If it's gonna be 1 extreme or the other I prefer this.
@Needham90 I would think so lmao. Could you imagine what a ref would do if two fencers went to their sides, put down their sabres, and brought out rapiers? There would be so many cards flying you would think the ref was a blackjack dealer.
I'm taking fencing class right now and all I thought of was this scene... and how much I want to do it. Who needs masks, padding, and not sharp point sticks anyways? Go with the very, very sharp rapiers!
1:23 That punch with the tip of the crossguard would have probably pierced old James' nose for him... Oh, Hollywood!

Nathikal 6 months ago
@Nathikal Well, Graves was amicable, Bond really wasn't. That look on his face never changed, he still looked a bit pissed off...

They caused more dollars worth damage than the amount of money they were betting.

@DeadmanDave The damage to the painting along was probably more than the whole club was worth!

God damn. If only the rest of the film was this good!

Better than the fights in the star wars prequels, the one against Darth Maul was good the rest were messy shit.

Wanted to know the Score of this Scene

The chair was unnecessary.
An advice for any fencing beginner: please, do not forget to spin and turn your back to your opponent like James did, it'll definitely improve your game and skills.

I'll take a gritty scene like this over the best CGI any day.
Horhayj 9 months ago in playlist Sword Fights 32
@Horhayj Are you a Mr Plinkett fan? According to him this fight scene is superior than lightsaber scene in the Star Wars Prequels, and he's right.

euromellows 10 months ago
One of the best fighting scenes ever! Also, I miss those kinds of Bond movies. Daniel Craig does nothing for me and the new storylines suck!

There is the sissy way and the English way!!
AmericanWarrior1776 10 months ago
You know what? Sword fights, North Korean hovercraft, DNA transplants. I miss that. The new movies, I don't know, they're an overreaction. If it's gonna be 1 extreme or the other I prefer this.

0.00 - 2:31: Black card?
Needham90 11 months ago 2
@Needham90 I would think so lmao. Could you imagine what a ref would do if two fencers went to their sides, put down their sabres, and brought out rapiers? There would be so many cards flying you would think the ref was a blackjack dealer.

@MidnightRedemption
Lol no shit comparing Katana vs Rapier..Foil is stupid Katana was made years later
If you want to take the Japanese Katana vs what the Europeans had at the time it would be
Japanese Katana vs. Europeon Musket
..Guns are better then Kendo :)
DraconicVisage 11 months ago
@MidnightRedemption any proof, other than this movie , of course.

I'm taking fencing class right now and all I thought of was this scene... and how much I want to do it. Who needs masks, padding, and not sharp point sticks anyways? Go with the very, very sharp rapiers!
