Fuck you man, he's not an idiot. Why the fuck would you think he wanted to do that?!? do us all a favor and Jump out of a plane with no parachute. I hope you survive.
@TheRaellz the more you respond the more you sound like one. he didn't want to do that. we have no control over that when the chute opens. I never planned on half of my chute to not open and I never planned on a line twist on my first jump.
@chittychad18 "the more you respond the more you sound like one." um.. what? 1 message from over 3 weeks ago? i hope english is not your first language. yes, he did want to flip backwards in his harness, watch it again. you cannot accidentally backflip in your harness... yes you do have control over that when the chute is deployed. gravity straightens you out and prevents loss of control. loss of control can only occur from falling. i don't care what you planned.
@chittychad18 you seriously want to suggest something that is physically impossible to this argument? when your chute is deployed gravity keeps your body from flailing around as you would in free fall. you cannot lose control unless the chute is not holding you up.
you have no idea what you're talking about and your grammar is piss poor at best. learn some english then we'll talk again.
this shows again that using a RSL adds to the risk, when does an RSL really help you?? Its supposed to be a safetey feature, but there are so many situations that can happen where the RSL makes it worse. I cant see the advantages balancing out the disadvantages.. You are trained to pull both handles, so thats what you do..!
@fettspinn exactly why I DONT use an RSL. There's no reason I'd cut away that low and there's no reason if i did cutaway that I wouldn't be able to pull my reserve handle. and if all else fails, there's the AAD
I know Chris. He was in Puerto Rico filming divers' first tandems for a company. The back flip was inadvertent as he was trying to catch the parachute opening of some random tourist. Inexperienced? Hardly. Inexperienced divers could not have recovered from this mishap. Anyway, he's still alive. And jumping.
"The back flip was inadvertent as he was trying to catch the parachute opening of some random tourist."
I knew there had to be a good explanation for the flip through the risers. No skydiver would do that knowing it could cause a mal. Up until now I though he was just joking around and that's when things turned potentially deadly. Thank you for posting the truth about what "really" happend.
What happened here? At 0:04 he had a fully open, fully functioning canopy... then as we saw it went way down hill from there. What did this guy do? And why did he have a camera considering he was obviously inexperienced?
@futuresartech he does a flip through his risers (dumb) which creates a step-through and in the process gets a main suspension line caught on his foot so he can't get away from the main when he chops.
I used to sneak into the packing room and switch assorted reserves from parachutes to old underwear. I loved the looks on riggers' faces when they popped the expired reserves to repack them.
I hope they were way old...what happens when someone jumps it, there's a cutaway and the guy gets a bunch of underwear flying out? hahahahaha Just like the cartoons where the spare tire comes out lol.
Most of the skydiving malfunctions are cause by pilot error. Chriss grissom shows us here by flipping through his risers under a fully stable canopy. If you listen to your instructors, and have proper body position, you'll have stable openings. you will greatly reduce your chances of a mal. But it comes with the sport.... do a tandem first see how you like it. Double mals are hardly ever, your reserves are pro packed every 120 days... hope this helps,
Reserve chutes are designed very conservatively, with one objective... deploying successfully and getting you to the ground safely. Odds of failure are much worse.
Odds of double malfunction are worse than one in a million.
A lot of deaths in skydiving are suicides. Many others are from stupidity.
Driving a car is dangerous too.
Do you wear a seat belt? Do you drive on properly inflated tires with good tread? Working brakes?
@SirBadger - dude, the guy did a backflip whilst under an open canopy. No one does this....ever! If you are worried that you may feel tempted to do such a thing then I would recommend against it. Otherwise go for it.
@SirBadger What you asked is like saying "I wanna get my drivers license but after watching crashes on youtube...."
Get me?
Go do your skydiving license and then once you understand everything about the equipment then make a decision to continue or not. Youtube is not the place to get your info from as the majority of people commenting wouldnt have a clue.
proxykillah & Ziro54, I agree with you both but couldn't his cypress also have fired? The spin was radical enough to give him the fall rate and he was pretty close to the ground. I know his reserve handle was out but that doesn't mean he released the reserve. A close call. Bet he got drunk that night!
I agree with proxyKillah, from what you can see, it does look like a line over, after the initial cutaway, he should have stabilized before deploying his reserve. . .
From what it looks like, it's one of two things initially - Either a line over, or a broken/stowed brake line that started the hard spin. He would have been ok - had he cut away and was facing the ground - his problem looks to be the reserve deployed into the main which was not completely cut away
yes he did good job controlling it but what want wrong when he release the main!! and did get back looking down so when he open his back up the parachute got stuck! but ! good job!!!!!!
hahahaha, he knew that was gunna hurt all the way down lol! just shows how important body position is when u deploy ur reserve, thats why i disagree with sky hooks and RSLs.
i love how the entire time you hear "shit fuck oh fuck shit" then hear some language other than english at the end when he gets up...even people who think they're dying curse in english!
This guy is, in fact, an idiot! Who the hell flips through their risers?? Have some respect for the sport, you're not riding bumper cars! I'm glad he walked away from that though, that was scary!
Dude in the title you shouldn't be calling him an idiot stuff like this happens all the time in skydiving I've seen an accident like this myself except it was much worse.
He did. His reserve entangled with his main, which was still twisted round his leg. Not a hell of a lot you can do about it apart from exactly what he did, which is to get in a messy little catfight with your lines. Still an idiot though.
that guy has to be given an award those malfuctions are dangerus and some may say to cut hes lines, its very easy to cut the wrong line in that situation, that guy is lucky to walk out of there.
lol hes not very brainy for doing that i was laughing at the fact he fucked up his backup shoot 2 but he shoulda at least of broke one of his legs or sumthing the impact he took would be the equvilent to me jumping off a 3 storie carpark with a binbag as a parachute lol
one lucky dude to walk away from that one.. one good thing to remeber all you skydivers out there.. is to take a second and think.. normally you have the time to do so. if you have a un-landable main.. cut it away.. go back into freefall(unless very..very low) belly to earth.. get your airspeed up and deploy the reserve into nice clean air.. will open much quicker and nicer. generally a safer plan.
He had no options, his main didn't clear an he was low. He deployed his reserve and it stayed in the free bag he did well getting it out. He screwed up badly causing this, but IMHO he did well from the chop onwards, I don't agree with armchair skydivers who think he should have spent the rest of his life clearing his main or fumbled around and gotten his hook knfe out and cut the lineover on a reserve at 100 ft. Altitude awareness is imperfect when shit happens and he did well.
You mean on his reserve? No time to hoo knife that lineover and there are several stories of skydivers cutting the wrong lines, that's a dangerous thing to try on your reserve even if it does have a lineover. If you're not an experienced jumper then STFU, you don't know what you're talking about. We've all done something questionable in our jumping careers. This guy actually did everything else RIGHT. A line/body entanglement on a high performance canopy goes very bad, very fast. This guy did a major slam dance with the reaper, and was cool enough to apologize to his video client! Expletives expected!
Man, what a lucky dumbass! Let's hope that he learned from this stunt .... about what NOT to do.
I'd say some PLF lessons are in order! The tall grass won't save his ass next time (and statistically, there will be another 'oh shit, oh fuck' landing if he keeps up with the antics).
U're joking right?? This guy shouldn't even be with a camera, he didn't check his canopy, didn't disconnect, got desperate fighting with the lines. Most others wouldn't even be in that much trouble! If it was my DZ he would be suspended.
Didn't "check his canopy" WTF? He was getting his ASS kicked by his canopy. He clearly did cutaway but had a line caught somewhere (probably his left leg, judging by the video). His reserve might have been deployed by the entangled lines or his AAD might have fired, but he actually did everything right! "Most others" wouldn't have even survived.
We all try stupid things at some point in our jump-life. Rob, glad God put his hand out and opened that chute for you. By all means, you should have been dead but for His Grace.
stupid DUMBASS tried doing a backloop under his main parachute....his lines got tangled and he started spinning like mad so he cutaway and pulled his reserve. his main got tangled with his reserve and so he started his ride of death to earth. luckily his main broke free from his reserve. there was still a malfunction with he reserve when he landed but luckily the stupid Spaniard landed in nice tall grass so he survived. technically: he should be dead but he got EXTREMELY lucky.
Respect for getting out of this mess. Looks like the main got stuck on your leg. Not many people would have walked away after having their reserve in their hands. Awesome job in getting it to inflate.
Why not? Ever try to pick out the 1, 2 or more lines in a line over and ensure that those are the only 750lb microlines that you are cutting...Then do that at -800'? If you at a couple thousand maybe, but if your wrong .....
The blue chute is the reserve. After the trouble with the main, he cutaway and pulled the reserve, but the main couldn't fly away because of the tangle and it interfered with the reserve. The double-failure is that after cutting away and pulling the reserve, he still did not have a good canopy (Meaning, it was not Square, Stable, and Steerable). That's why he is so lucky to be alive--it was very possible that he could have ended up with no chute at all, and free-fallen all the way to the ground.
Don't let this fool sway you. He was under a perfectly good canopy, then tried to do a backflip through his risers, which cause the malfunction...haha, What a clown.
What he said. Anna (or something like that)... I'm sorry I couldn't film your landing... but I had a problem with my 1st chute (meaning main)... I will see you in the airport.
The two most common famous last words uttered by pilots are "oh s***," amazingly enough, not screamed, but sort of helpless resignation. Source: cockpit voice recorders
He made his mistake, for sure...but on the scale of stupidity he's still somewhere near the bottom. Bet he never felt better to be back on the ground though :-)

I am just amazed that he landed that thing. That was an incredible recovery.

Expletives expected!

why did he not relise a reserve chute?

Man, what a lucky dumbass! Let's hope that he learned from this stunt .... about what NOT to do.
I'd say some PLF lessons are in order! The tall grass won't save his ass next time (and statistically, there will be another 'oh shit, oh fuck' landing if he keeps up with the antics).

Then the stupidity genes will be prevented from passing on to the next generation. =D

Lucky..very..Looks like you got 8 out of your 9 lives left.
You did really well to get out of that most others would be gone.
joefaetheblock 4 years ago
U're joking right?? This guy shouldn't even be with a camera, he didn't check his canopy, didn't disconnect, got desperate fighting with the lines. Most others wouldn't even be in that much trouble! If it was my DZ he would be suspended.
jaydias13 3 years ago
Didn't "check his canopy" WTF? He was getting his ASS kicked by his canopy. He clearly did cutaway but had a line caught somewhere (probably his left leg, judging by the video). His reserve might have been deployed by the entangled lines or his AAD might have fired, but he actually did everything right! "Most others" wouldn't have even survived.

Skydiving IS NOT DANGEROUS - Being Stupid IS - NUM NUT!!!!!!!

We all try stupid things at some point in our jump-life. Rob, glad God put his hand out and opened that chute for you. By all means, you should have been dead but for His Grace.
Glad you survived it Bro. Blue Skies.
texNoz 4 years ago
stupid DUMBASS tried doing a backloop under his main parachute....his lines got tangled and he started spinning like mad so he cutaway and pulled his reserve. his main got tangled with his reserve and so he started his ride of death to earth. luckily his main broke free from his reserve. there was still a malfunction with he reserve when he landed but luckily the stupid Spaniard landed in nice tall grass so he survived. technically: he should be dead but he got EXTREMELY lucky.
godimtired 4 years ago
wait, he did a little backflip under his chute? is that it? why the hell did he do that?
youngseandunn 4 years ago 5
To look cool on video.
dorbie 3 years ago
what an idiot, he is so lucky
wagalagger 4 years ago 2
Respect for getting out of this mess. Looks like the main got stuck on your leg. Not many people would have walked away after having their reserve in their hands. Awesome job in getting it to inflate.
No hook knive available to cut the line over?
Hausse 4 years ago 3
I don't know if you want to go swinging a hook knife at your reserve lines at 800'
divnswoop 4 years ago
Why not? Cut the line over away and you'd be fine (assuming that you get it done in time). As I already stated it's damed good to stay that cool...
Hausse 4 years ago
Why not? Ever try to pick out the 1, 2 or more lines in a line over and ensure that those are the only 750lb microlines that you are cutting...Then do that at -800'? If you at a couple thousand maybe, but if your wrong .....

I don't really know the sport, could someone explain exactly what happened here? Is the blue chute the reserve? Where is the double-failure?
silverbakuk 4 years ago

ItsallaboutwatIthink 4 years ago 3
Nice translation but i think he said "Angel" instead "Anna", also if you hear at the end, he add "brother" so the message is for a man.
By the way this guy certanly is not mexican or any other country were spanish is first language. Probably USA hearing his accent.

Could have been worse. He could have landed on the runway pavement instead of the tall spungie grass

The two most common famous last words uttered by pilots are "oh s***," amazingly enough, not screamed, but sort of helpless resignation. Source: cockpit voice recorders
