Notice that the car has a remote lock system... the tennis ball "trick" is a hoax, the pressure might be enough to push the tumblers into the correct position on the lock mechanism, but it would not create the left/right turning force required to push the lock mechanism up.

Just a wild guess here, but once you opened the door, couldn't you presumably turn the car on with the keys that were...well...locked inside?

Also, I haven't seen the mythbusters episode on this, but this looks seriously unlikely. You can't really force enough air pressure to undo the locking mechanism with a tennis ball.

Think... You have to put the tumblers or equivalent back and then TURN the key. I have done this and it works well when doubled with a remote door opener or keyless entry. I had my kids thinking my car radio was voice activated for weeks before I showed them the remote. This is a joke and Myth Busters or Snope should not be put out with this type of simple.

Maybe it depends on what car? I think what they're doing is tricking the sensor that's supposed to unlock all the doors in a collision. There's a story about a guy unlocking a Cadillac STS with a sledge hammer to the front tire, because he knew the right spot to hit.

@gnorty: Believe me, I know. I'm a mechanic, and the mechanism by which the power lock system works is by a pull or push rod. This is done from 3 locations. The tumbler, the electric lock actuator, and the internal lock pull. To open a lock from the tumbler, it HAS to turn. My explanation was a bit simplistic, but I was trying to keep it that way for the youtube crowd.

@trevorus one thing a remote key fob will never do...TURN THE LOCK TUMBLER. I'm not saying the tennis ball technique works, but it is not the only way. Central locking systems will open without the tumbler turning. You can also use a hacksaw blade or similar to operate the door locks without moving the tumbler, and even lift up the lock button with a coat hanger/packing strap or even your fingers, all without operating the lock tumbler. I wonder how many people give a fuck what you say?
