  • Why doesn't Wine comes pre-attached to Linux? It's fairly easy to install I admit, but I can't see a reason to not have it. I am having situational problems with wrong versions and other small and beyond me complications, so why not have it pre-set so people have no hassle at all? I'm more curious then concerned for it, so please don't suggest I am trying to be selfish or rude, just curious.

  • @heroineadict Wine isn't pre-installed mostly for copyright and licensing purposes. For them to package it with a distribution that distribution would have to get permission to package it with the OS.

  • @heroineadict why do you want to run wine... it's sucks like windows .. now you have great games runnig over the GNU linux system

  • @heroineadict wine is just a package. Linux is a program ( a kernel) so ti's just Impossible that you can install wine in linux.. Of course you need a complete Os ( which all distributions are). So do not just say in "linux" Gnu linux is the right way!!

  • Dude, you should review that huge freakin' sword that's behind your computer desk.

  • LOL,

  • your computer sounds LOUD

  • That was actually a HUGE fan I had mounted on my desk. My computer was overheating big time because of a bad case design. It has since been fixed.

  • oh! thats why. i'm working on building a pc, i got an enormous case the size of a dish washer. good thing is i can fit quieter fans in there.

  • Yeah... case choice is probably one of the most important when it comes to a new computer. If you check my channel I have a video of my computer in it's new case. It's virtually silent when the front bezel is closed.

  • cool. i chose to get a intel core i7 extreme. means i'll have to wait a little before i get enough cash to get a solid amount of ram to finish mine off, but i won't have to get any more upgrades for a while.

  • i personaly love macs but that my opinion (its better) xD

  • You're going to go from Linux to Vista eventually?

    Isn't that a downgrade?

  • So I'm thinking of running this on this really old pc instead of the bootleg xp on there.

So if I just want to try it out first without wiping out my harddrive..I could run it on a CD? And I don't need Linux to send me a copy right? I can just burn one myself and run it thru the optical instead of my hdd? Thanks.

  • If your computer can handle XP it can handle most Linux distributions. I use Mint 6 myself. No copyright needed, this is free software, no legal issues involved. Burn the .iso file to a CD, load it and reboot, making sure that you boot from the CD. Be careful about one thing, though: some distro's will automatically install to your HD if you don't choose another option so watch the screen as it boots. You can burn every distro and try it out until you find the one you like most.

  • you should do a review on the latest version of mint.

  • I don't want to download it. So what stores can I buy Linux mint 7 at?

  • None i guess.

  • I'm not aware of any stores that sell Linux Mint. It's free software. If you're not able to download it then you could have a friend do it but it's only about 700MB. If you're concerned that it is illegal then don't be. It's 100 percent free.

  • Great review!

  • I see linux mint 7 gloria just released it looks and seems pretty sweet, alot better than 6 for sure :)

  • Hi, Eric. I wrote to you yesterday, but I have a question specifically about Linux Mint 6 Main for you today. How do I access/where is Add/Remove Programs in Linux Mint 6 Main. I can't find it.

Thank you for your help. It's appreciated however minor it is.

  • To access an add or remove programs type option in Linux Mint you will need to open Synaptics Package Manager. This will allow you to install programs or remove programs. Installing programs is very easy... all you have to do is search for the program from synaptics... put a check in it... and hit apply changes and it will download and install the program automatically.

  • Oh dear Cupcake, did you break a nail, bless.

  • will linux mint work well with 512mb ram?

  • Yes it will. 512 is actually the recommended minimum... you can sometimes get by with 256 if the CPU is fast enough.

  • thanks :D i have installed it on my old laptop now lol

  • or on 512mb of ram a person could use the xfce version of linux mint which is light weight and still runs stuff outta the box.

  • Sorry. I didn't watch the whole video.

  • It's cool.

  • Awesome accent! I have Linux Mint and I love it. AMAZING!

  • I disagree...

Mint is actually not easier to use than Ubuntu, in fact the only real difference is that Ubuntu has the add/remove & manger vs. the only manager which Mint offers. BUT Mint (Felicia) has proven to be more stable, pleasing to the eye, and the WiFi handles it's self much better. Another benefit is that there is more flexibility with the panels for customisation.

    Otherwise they are identical.

  • Linux Mint has been pretty good to me, its like a good woman that you can depend on lol. I get such a euphoria over linux cause it seems better than windows and i'm not sayin windows is all bad, I just prefer linux over windows and it just seems if I went back to windows i'd want to be back with linux again.

  • That polo is straight out of the '70s.

    Awesome video though.

    Oh,and your wife is hot.

  • Linux is great for people who work, Windows is great for gamers and movies...

Why cant we mix them? XD

  • In what way is Windows better for movies? I watch a lot of movies in Linux and it works like a charm. When I used Windoze i had a lot of trouble with codecs missing and the system wasn't even able to retrieve the right ones.

  • Well I didnt had any problems with Vegas.

  • But still... what makes Windows better with movies?

  • I dont know, maybe its the same. But for me its better to make movies in windows.

  • Ah, sorry dude. I thought you meant simply playing movies. ^^ I agree that there aren't any really sophisticated editing software available.

  • Hey man .....you have kino and others that work very good actually ....and you have blender for more professional work .

    i looooove linux :)

  • Hey your wife pretty hot, how about reviewing her titties for us?

  • Thanks I guess... sorry but those belong to me... no need to review what everyone else can't have!

  • good Video I've used various Linux distros on my I.B.M Net Vista Computer and I All ways come back to Linux Mint cellna , Cassandra or Freespire the installers for these Distros are easy to work with un like victor or Centos O;K I need some Help from some of you Linux users Right Now I;m using Freespire With Kino But it requires Fire wire to make video is there any adapters I could use so that I can hook up Fire wire cables to my computer.

  • Check out newegg and pick up a firewire PCI card for about $15. Other than that no other options really.

  • thanks for your review, I'm a windows vista user looking for something open to use, just can't decide between Linux Mint and PC-BSD

    churr

  • Never had any experience with PC-BSD so I can't really make a recommendation there.

  • how did you remove it from the blacklist? Also I am considering version 6 but as you are using it on a laptop you may be able to tell me how it handles the wifi. Ubuntu is killing me because it dies on me periodically, only when I am downloading or transferring files. OpenSUSE is good but the wifi connector has disappeared and I have not seen it sense. Please, I am leaching off my neighbors internet so i need to know how well the wifi REALLY is, no sugar coating. Thanks man.

  • Okay... lets see if I can answer all of this. I removed it from the blacklist by editing the config file for compiz using a text editor.

Wifi is great for me but people may see varied results depending on their wifi chipset among other factors. The best thing I can tell you is download the live CD and run the wifi under that for a while to test it. Also you may want to attempt to connect to different networks for testing purposes because you never know the reliability of your neighbors.

  • dagum!!! shooooweee!!!! I dagum didn't dagum knur thart durrrrr O.o

Jp. I love linux. but dang it i love hillbilly accents :)

  • ha what a gimp!!!

no he is cool cos he uses linux JUST LIKE ME!!!!

    YAY MORE OPEN SOURCENESS!!!!!

  • Great video. I installed Linux Mint and I'm loving it.

  • Great review, I am the art-team director for Linux Mint, and like this review. I do have to make 1 very small correction though, Mint branched off of Ubuntu on version 2.1, and all later versions of Mint are based from there, though it does share some resources with Ubuntu, such as repos. It is more like a cousin of Ubuntu.

  • Thanks for the input. I didn't know that... everything I could find was that it was based from Ubuntu and not that it had branched out that much. Can I ask what it was that you may have had a say in design wise? I find it very interesting that you worked with the project.

  • good stuff brother

  • Nice vid mate. You apologize for the accent but to me you're perfectly clear and understandable. Keep up the good work.

  • How about you do a review on that big ass sword in the background that thing looks awesome.

Nice vid. I don't really like Linux Mint. I use Slackware myself, but I like the fact that it brings a lot of new comers to the Linux world

  • Review on the sword coming right up! Gimme a day or two.

  • cool

  • Hey baby. This is a great vid and you do so well answering questions. I love you babe and you need to make more!!! Come on now you need to be famous on here lol Great job! :D

  • I've written viruses for linux, but they're kinda hard to distribute, and even harder to disguise since everything is open source. Over all, it's just not worth it.

  • That's a very good question. I'd love to have the answer but honestly I don't. I can tell you it does a routine hard drive check every so many boots, and I myself have had some heat related hard drive issues that caused other OSs to hang that don't on mint.

You should probably go over o the forums on the official site and post that question, it's something important and if it isn't resolved in this version it'll let them know what to work on.

  • Is Mint more forgiving with regards to hard drives,

I have installed Ubuntu on a old machine, AMD Duron 700MHz, 512 RAM and a very old 8GB HDD.

The installation was smooth and quick however when I reboot -- the OS would start hanging after a few seconds then eventually freeze.

I believe it is dues to the HDD check which Ubuntu performs. XP SP2 runs on this PC without any issues because it does far fewer and less intensive HDD checks.

Would Mint forgive problem hardware ?

  • might want to try Xubuntu

  • Good suggestion, also could look into Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux, but Xubuntu would be great... didn't think of that.
