however I fear that the material was produced (much like many of the expo works) explicitly for the temporary exhibit. It's too bad to see great designers still reaching into the same bag of tricks and using resources like they will never run out......
Amazing work of temporary architecture...However, how long does the expo last? Where will millions of acrylic rods end up? It would be nice to know if they were waste to start with, for if they turn into garbage once the expo concludes this would be an apt intervention,
@Dovepetal They're being sent to schools after the expo. Think how much electricity you used to watch this video - maybe you should stop watching videos, and using electricity if you are so concerned. Wear layers and read a book (from a library)
I went there stood in line for 3 hours went inside and it was cool the first three seconds.... then I relaized I had wasted three hours of my life in iine
epic fail... I recommend going to the mexico, japan, and spain pavillons lots of technology and interesting things
It's visually stunning, and also very successful in communicating the importance of nature and seeds... but it is ironic that the architecture is totally reliant on acrylic, a non-biodegradable, unsustainable material made from a heavily polluting non-renewable fossil fuel... and in a few years time, I imagine the building will look terrible, as acrylic won't weather well.
@oldweng ... This building was designed by a British designer though. I know what you mean though... alot of development is at any cost to the environment as long as it looks good.
@Rocklobsterport as a singular contemplation on the potential of one seed, the seed cathedral's form is magnificent, but as the most talented work of all time, there are so many variables to consider with the built-form for one thing to be considered THE SINGLE BEST. in my opinion, there is no one best building, but a multitude of well executed projects, this absolutely being one.
@EmilTowersIV Well.......... sorry for not being precise in my first comment. Conceptualwise, the UK pavilion is definite "one" of the most talented works all over the world and of all time. I especially admire the final work they presented to us. The whole image just amazed me, don't mention the seeds they sealed in each acrylic stick....... Again, my world is limited to some degree that's for sure. What I said in my first comment is pure from my very first thought. Cheers !!
Pure genius creation. So animated with these "furs" (optical fibers) that you can vicariously feel the entire building is gently "breathing" on its own. What a beautiful symbiosis between art and space.
I commened this elswhere already: the UK was going to have a pavillion anyhow. Why not spend the money on this one? 70-100 million visitors (+ media) - if one percent gets the message of the Millennium Seed Bank Project and acts as multiplicators, that's great!
Go, adopt a seed. Start growing. Start to do somthing worthwhile in a line of 4.2 billion years of evolution which lead to... you. (And some nice plants.)
So gutted that I never got chance to see it :(

@Darthmoon88
Nothing really. They're more symbolic rather than practical. The building itself is a symbol of nature and life.

@Darthmoon88
its a "seed bank", a kind of "database for plants" if you will.
Scientists have the ability to clone any of the plants within the seed bank.
