I have no relation to any middle eastern/south asian people, I live on the other side of the world from India, Cant speak Hindi to save my life, and I LOVE THIS MOVIE TO DEATH!
@Mrjustmean Some superficial details are changed so that it makes more sense in modern Indian context. Like instead of being a moor the main character is a half-caste. Also Iago actually has a good reason for wanting to destroy Othello in this version, unlike the original where it was unexplained. A lot of people consider this an improvement to the original story though. You should definitely check it out!
@chiragatronacious having said that, i agree omkara was great. but unfortunately, there were and are tons of other great foreign movies from europe, latin america, and other parts of asia that were competing for the best foreign movie award that same year..also, those movies aren't musicals and therefore are seen as being more legit and realistic.
The truth is that Bollywood would have better movies if they paid their writers. Most of the scripts are thrown together by the directors who use star power and glam to make their money and the technology goes to making the music. It's no secret that Bollywood doesn't delve into characterization so good stories get kicked to the wayside which is a shame. But for the record, Slumdog Millionaire was trash and racist and western awards mean diddly squat as far as I'm concerned.
@RavynneRune how was slumdog millionaire racist? it was based on a book written by a very creative & talented Indian author Vikas Swarup. Slumdog has done a lot for Indian cinema. I happened to watch it when i was visiting family in Toronto. Prior to that. very few Canadians showed any interest in Indian cinema and actors. After SM, many Canadians started getting interested in Indian culture and were praising the acting chops of the Indian cast in the movie.
@RavynneRune I even was told by some Indo-Canadians(Indians born and raised in Canada) that they thoroughly enjoyed the movie and that it was a breath of fresh air(with the genius & creative plot) compared to the brainless unexciting bollywood movies. whether you like it or not(get over your complex), poverty, dirty/grimy streets, and communal violence is very much a part of India. i've heard tourists talk about how dirty and extreme India can be. it's friendly people are its saving grace.
@chiragatronacious portraying their country's real problems..eg.street kids, slums, and poverty in the urban centre mixed with corruption. all you guys want is fake movies with huge mansion houses with the main actor returning from overseas and falling in love with a beautiful girl. her parents objecting to the affair or stupid movies where a bunch of guy friends are players who hit on girls left and right until one of 'em falls in love with the heroine..ugh..so uncreative, predictable &generic.
@chiragatronacious are you kidding me? rang de basanthi, althought a lot better than the other stupid mindless bollywood movies, was still not the most realistic movie. it might be better than the other trashy bollywood movies but that doesn't istantly make it worthy of an oscar. you need a great story that is creative and and on top of that great acting. rang de basanthi, i'm sorry to say, doesn't quite make the cut. slumdog was great!why do indians have such a complex when it comes to
@chiragatronacious Ya, the west is pretty ignorant about India and has only one view of it, that India is a 3rd world with villages and poor people everywhere. So if you show them villages and poverty, then it goes to Oscar and some immature Indians get excited. Oscar is just USA's national award, I don't know why we Indians lick Oscars so much and not giving respect to our National Awards itself, especially people like Aamir Khan. Oscars is over rated as is Hollywood.
I'm reading a really good book about Indian Cinema. The writer was around durring the entire making of this film and he documented alot of neat things about the making.
Ive never seen the film but the book made me want to check it out (So here I am)
If any of you are interested it's called "Fantasies of a Bollywood Love Theif"
@daddy12345 actually, no point. its just that eveyrone was praising this movie so much, and then when i saw it, i realized it was Othello, which made me a little upset, because as much as i love bollywood, it always copies off hollywood ..
dude othello is not hollywood ,its written by father of hollywood shaekspeare 400 years before ,even i hate bollywood crap and love world cinema but vishal is a GENIUS and that too totally desi
@coolguy7248 ight, you win. happy? but it dont mean bollywood doesnt copy other movies tho :) and as much as i hate to, i agree, vishal, is good, never said otherwise :)
@pennii86 Then better keep watching Othello and don't watch Omkara. Of course the director gave credit to Othello, performances in Omkara deserve much appreciation. If you can't appreciate acting and just analysing whether its copy or not, then you better go into script writing rather than criticizing on youtube.
@pvmeh Alright buddy, you're cool. okay? and sorry to break it to you, but every video/movie/whatever gets praise and/or criticism. If my comment is unsettling for you, then it's your problem - no need to get on my case. :) i said what i thought and i still stand by it. Also if people want to, they criticize - get over it, it's not the end of the world.
I don't know why people all over the world are crazy about Oscar awards and they think that this is the ultimate recognition. I rate our India's national awards as the real awards. Oscars are much biased to the American movies. Its just like USA's filmfare awards. So people (especially some Indians), please stop getting excited about Oscars. Its an over rated award.
Great!! I Did N't Seed Yet Movie Lyk Omkara Vishal Ur Great & Actor's 2 Plz Do More Vishal U Have A Great Think Keep It Up Omkara Iz Super Super Hit V All Lyk omkara Movie U Have Doned A Great Job Owesome Movie By Vishal Bhardwaj Nice.
For the movie to be nominated to the Oscar foreign language category, it has to be first nominated by the respective country for the competition. I dont think either of them were sent by India.
As for other categories, members of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), a professional honorary organization first nominate their choices , from which the nominations are chosen based on voting. Another rule - the movie has to have opened in a Los Angeles county theater.
@chiragatronacious.. I presume when you say Westerners only like movies showing little kids in poverty, you are referring to Slumdog millionaire. Well, I think you only saw poverty in that movie, you didnt see the struggle by Jamal to have a better life for himself and his love. Not only him, but his brother albeit through different means and with a different view point.
great story ,acting, script nd all, cract lik omi n langda m very impressed to wishal bhardwz i think i never seen before lik this movie a so loong time..
Miss pearl1729..if you find Bollywood movies as "exaggerated romantic and silly", then better not watch them. For your information this "silly" Bollywood is ruling hearts of millions over the world these days. It is not restricted to FBI movies, nudity and four letter word movies which Hollywood offers.
Though the Oscars are seen as the creme de la creme of all film awards, it's unfortunately based around the Hollywood film industry and concentrates on only a handful of "world cinema" - because of this, many people think that American films are the best, which is certainly not true.
Er, no it is not true. Since, you're an American, that is what you wish to think. Of course, the best films are based on individual's personal opinion.

whtever nationality u r ? no one cares here...im an indian..i love watching korean flicks...
and im sure this movie deserves world wide acclaim..its a master piece created by shakespear...n shown by vishal....i love every part of the movie ...
What the hell are you talking about? You ask what nationality I am then say "no one cares here"...?? Don't speak for other people, btw. It's clear by your response that English isn't your first language - don't bother to respond again as it's obvious you don't understand what I'm saying.
British ? nice to hear that, I am sure you are very much aware of Shakespeare's works, then may I ask you what do you think of this movie ? especially western people know Bollywood as exaggerated romantic movie, most of them are silly. But there are some nice movies and Directors and Vishal is one of them I feel. Tell me what do u think. I would like to hear
You may find a lot of Bollywood films "silly", but like Hollywood, Bollywood has always been diverse in many ways - a quick search on Google found me dozens of blogs; one of them is Memsaabstory which is about classic Indian cinema - check it out. I haven't read Othello as a child, but this film alone does seem to appeal to a much wider audience on an international scale.
I agree with you. Some fools in the world and most in USA see as Oscars being the final destination. American movies have the same story: either an FBI agent, some virus-infected scenario, American pie kind of shit or movies on Blacks. The old movies were good but I can tell you that people should stop being slave fans of Hollywood and give importance to cinema in their own country.
I never watch Indian films and I just happened to watch this film. If any one can reccommend one like this please tell me. As I hate all that stupid jumping around trying to be disco. This was just puuure GANGSTER!!
