Also for a response to thank you, I use "thank you" right back. I never use "welcome" for a response to thank you, because like you said it's very formal, and the meaning isn't the same. The sign for welcome is very literal, like "welcome to my home" more than "You are welcome." I also do the hand wave thing you did, haha.
