@drgarga do you want development or do you want people to keep farming? look at china. they brought millions out of agriculture and into industry. today, india has millions of surplus labour in agriculture (3 people are doing one man's job on the farm). we need to get these people into factories. only way to do it is to build more factories (even if it means displacing some people from their land).

along with the obvious victorian (british type) architecture, Art Deco was a very popular style of architecture in calcutta (and even bombay) durring the 60s and 70s ..if you google "art deco architecture' and click on 'images' ...you'll realize a lot those buildings look like old kolkata or mumbai buildings, that are still very much around, and appreciated. (like the old buildings on marine drive, mumbai; metro cinema etc, kolkata)

@vjt9 Have you ever had the chance of visiting Kolkata? If you did you would know what I mean. Modern Bengali Architecture is very unique and you will only find buildings like ITC Sonar, Uniworld City, the new airport, in Bengal only.

Modern Bengali Architecture is defined by sharp angled lines: Lines running either vertically or horizontally in repeated manner. Also corners are more acute than usual. Modern Bengali Architecture also includes Bengal-specific garden.

@tourkolkata my friend ...i live in kolkata! ...the architecture that you are describing as Bengali architecture ...like Sonar Bangla ...is not Bengali ...it it reminiscent of what in Architecture Study as the "Post-Mordern" or "Retro" architecture ..for eg AC Market on theater road is a 'retro design building' not bengali architecture building. If you formally study architecture ..you will realize that there is No such thing as "modern bengali architecture" ...ask an architect ..if you like!

P.S: not every state or region can have their own architecture. you know very well why Bengalis don't follow that trend.

@tourkolkata i think , rather than telling me to visit kolkata, you shoud try and get out and visit some other places ...you will realize that these vertical, horizontal lines you are talking about can be found everywhere outside cal also. in fact nether of the buildings you mentioned (itc, uniworld, especially the new airport, sector 5 etc) were even designed in Bengal ..yes, they were ALL designed by non-bengalis ..sorry.
