I hate when people compare lions and tigers. You're talking about two different cats with two different ways of surviving. As for who would win, it would be a fare game. Size doesn't really matter. It's their territory. Lions live in hot tundras with little foliage, and tigers are in grassy forests with lots of shade. So if they were to fight, it would depend on the environment, as it would give the upper hand to either one.

Lions hunt larger prey (Some videos on utube show Lions killing Elephants, Hippo's and Giraffes) and compete with more carnivors for food (Leopards, Wild dogs, Cheatahs, Crocs but mostly Hyena's).
In the wild Lions can get attacked by packs of 20-40 Hyena's and have to survive.
When was the last time a Tiger got attacked by like 40 animals around the same size as itself? NEVER. Wild Lions have more experience fighting and hunting larger animals and Lions will always beat Tigers in fights.

Also, the lion's mane would offer some degree of protection against a fatal throat-bite. It wouldn't make the killing bite impossible by any means, but it would certainly make it more difficult to achieve and hold.
