  • I thought it sounded like I Hugh Tracey, but I don't remember ever seeing them with brass colored tines. Yes it can be called Kalimba, Karimba,Marimba, Mbira, Lemulla, Lemellaphone ,Likembe, Thumb piano, Thumb drum, I might even be missing some. This instrument has been around for a really long time, used by many cultures, not just in Africa, and it seems to have picked up a new name with every culture. Thanks for the super quick reply. I'll have to go to Kalimbamagic and see which one it is.

  • What brad is that Kalimba? I love the tone!

  • @purity4all Re: What brand? I'd have to check with my nephew to be certain, but I believe it is a Hugh Tracey Kalimba, made by "African Musical Instruments" in Grahamstown, South Africa. This particular model has 17 tines arranged in two rows. I believe it is also called a Karimba. The store had some which were tuned using traditional African turning, but I bought this one as it was tuned to a western scale. See the "kalimbamagic" website for further on models and scales.

  • @ElectricVentures Yes, Brand. This keyboard is always missing letters no matter how hard I type.

  • @purity4all Sometimes you can rescue a keyboard key by popping it off and inserting a small folded piece of paper, so that the key makes better contact with the microswitch. Then again, one can pick up a used keyboard for a song at places like eBay. .... I see that I had some "typos" as well: "turning" should be tuning ! Also, the last sentence should end "for further INFO on models and scales. ;-)
