This was actually performed in Boston, Mass. during a Met tour. Rosa Ponselle was the Carmen. Thanks for posting this excerpt, would love to hear more.
I have heard and read about Pinza's Escamillo for at least thirty years, but this is the first opportunity I've had to hear it. Excellent, even if his top Fs are a little flat:). Then again, Pinza admitted in his autobiography that he always had trouble with high notes. And the voice's size, richness and generally excellent technique, as heard here, are beyond reproach. he is one of my favorite singers of all time. but to me not his best role.
