If only SOE didnt design their engine as CPU heavy.. Even now a 3.7ghz Quad Core struggles. Atleast they were able to put in shader 3.0 after all these years.
Also notice when he mentions about "you design your character's looks, race etc.." and just jump into the game, worry about class specific decisions later. EQ2 used to be this way but it isn't anymore and infact the original starting area is now gone of the latest update.
While this was pretty state of the art in 2002, they have really neglected the coding quite a bit over the years. EQ2 still only runs at it's best on a single core P4 with high clock speeds which was more popular back then. Today, multicore CPU's which are basically all that they have in the only PC's available anymore can't even run this game as well as it should because the coding just dosen't run good on them.

Most machines still could not display eq2 as it was meant to be displayed. If they'd released it like this, people would simply have complained of system req's and lag.
If you prefer realism (as I do), EQ2 is still the best looking game out there. WoW, while fun, just doesn't compare.
Even 11 months ago, it's funny that only EQ2 and WoW are compared when it comes to realism. Guild Wars far surpasses both in realism (especially character renderings and deep colors) and it is playable even on a mediocre setup; but alas, the depth of play is lacking. I've often thought that if they could somehow employ the GW rendering engine with the breadth that EQ2 offers (tradeskills, number of quests, raiding, etc.), EQ2 would be unmatched.
I suppose it's a matter of opinion. EQ2 on high graphics settings looks amazing compared to any other MMO on the market - imo. Some of the high level armour sets and items look awesome, and if your machine can handle it, the shadows give the visuals great depth. We can agree that it dosen't look the same as the movie clip - but it's not THAT far off. EQ2 isn't even half as bad visually as some people like to make it out to be - they clearly just don't have the machine to run it in all it's glory
Eq2 looks nothing like this, I really wish it did. While the polygon count may be higher than some other mmos the style and feel of areas is absolutly hideous, its just really ugly.
A huge letdown with EQ2 is that all your gear will look the same from lvl 1 to lvl 70. The only difference will be change of texture. Another huge letdown is that almost all races share the same animations. And almost all races has the same skeleton
Say what you will about WoW's art-style and graphics, but it has EQ2 beat hands down on making races feel unique through the use of different animations.
What? eq2 has not only more animations but it also feels more unique because of the fact the animations look real thanks to the better graphics and fluid movement. Wow has horrible graphics and choppy movement. The jump function in wow is ridiculous also..
Sorry, but the fact is that EQ2's animations are all exactly the same with the obvious exceptions of Sarnak, and Fae/Arasai; they're just adjusted to fit the scale of the model.
Is EQ2 more realistic? Of course. Are it's animations better? Yeah. Are they more unique between races? Absolutely not.
Just so you EQ2 players know... (which you should since you play the game already..) EQ2 looks nothing like this. The graphics got a SERIOUS downgrade before it went live because these were too intense for everyone to handle, and the game looks atrocious now.
Yeah, I was just pointing that out because the EQ2 fanbois here are acting like this is what the game looks like right now, when it obviously DOES NOT
A top-end machine is just now - 6 years later - starting to do this demo justice, and only if you use top settings. And you will still get crap framerates in a raid. These guys deserve some credit for creating a game in 2002 that is still past the state of the art visually.
My settings are max and the game doesn't touch this demo in terms of animation and rendering. Also graphic downgrade before release I can buy but what happened to the design/imagination that went into creating armour like the human chick? Asymetrical high fantasy.. Only thing in this demo that EQ2 is approaching after 6 years is the scale of the architecture...
Graphic quality can do it.. but cards are not good enough (yet) but I agree - textures are all same(ish). but then again.. Metal is metal.. else we would end up like in EQ with lots of pink and green bards strumming around
I just recently quit this game,Ive been playing since day and Im just plain sick of the lok and feel of the game.Youre armor look's exactly the same other then the color tint from level 20 +,same goes with spell effects and the envoronment for the most part.
Shame they cocked up the engine so badly and shitkicked the graphics on top of it.

If EQ2 didnt screw up on its armor design and implimented this sytem , EQ2 would have alot more people playing it.

Ofcourse it would, you were not expecting to run graphics more or less like Crysis on machines of 4 years ago, right?

Yeah, I was just pointing that out because the EQ2 fanbois here are acting like this is what the game looks like right now, when it obviously DOES NOT

@SISLA
Especially with EQ2's laughably horrible engine.
If it had an halfway appropriate render it'd be possible to make it look fairly decent.
