Aloha! THanks for sharing these videos they were very helpfull. me and my BF needed to have a sense of what the nxtstage machine use and requirements entails -he's on list waiting for transplant , on D in-center and considering doing home hemo wondering whether its worth the required self dedication at home as well as lengthy training to do since he has a good outlook for short transplant wait time of round 6-8mo; you did a great job with your vids.STAY STRONG!
Dude that was awesome but freaking me out!!! I spent 18 years on HEMO An d didn't have the balls or strength to stick myself! 14 years w/Tplant with a creatine of 4.4!!!! Loks like I'll be back on down the road...??? 2 years on the list now for T-2.
THANKS So much for the videos..We just started using Nx stage at the ICU were i work at for abt 3mos. Let me tell you we (the nurses) were so overwhelmed and intimidated by it since we are not dialysis nurses. So far the training has been good and we have had patients on CRRT. We could not believe the chief nephrologist when he told us dialysis was being done at home using nx stage! You have given me so much more confidence. Thank u so much and will pass on the video to my coworkers:]
I am a home hemodialysis nnurse and I train my patients to keep the catheter cleaning / soaking solution under their ports so that they don't get against your shirt and become recontaminated when you are disconnecting. Keeping things sterile is crucial. A blood infection can be fatal and be careful not to rush making your connections. Good job with wearing your mask and gloves!
I always tried to keep the catheter ends from hitting anything (I was actually never trained to leave the betadine under the lines) This was actually done about a week after I started doing my own dialysis, so my technique does look a little sloppy. I was able to start using my graft about two weeks later, and it felt SO GOOD to get that thing out of my chest!
It's been 1 year and 4 months now. I just came to see my doctor today. My creatinine has increased up to 1.9. I so scare coz' i didn't have a very good experience during the hemodialysis period.
I'm nieve. Please forgive me. But the hose with the red clip ..do you jut lose all of that blood all together? Thnx for the vids ...makes me aware. I had no idea before what the process was like. I pray you are feeling well today.
Usually all of the blood is returned during the saline rinse, but sometimes a little bit of blood is lost. It usually looks like I've lost more blood than I actually have. The little bit that is lost usually doesn't effect my hemoglobin level, so it's not generally a problem to lose a little.
I have kidney failure, and the dialysis takes over for the failed kidneys. I've been doing it at home now for over a year and a half, and I'll never go back into a dialysis centre if I can avoid it. So much more freedom at home.

Thanks. How long have you had your transplant? I'm just now finishing the work up to get on the list.

great video! what are you giving yourself at the end? Heparin?
katieteele 3 years ago
I inject saline to flush the blood back, then I put heparin in to keep the catheter from clotting.
