This vid is awesome. I never warmed up before playing, and after about 25 years of playing there's a price to pay for that. Right before I hit 40, my hands started getting stiff and swollen after 20 minutes of playing - and no amount of Tylenol would help.
After doing these exercises, I can keep going for hours with no pain.
Do the warmups, kids. Your hands and arms will thank you when you start going grey!
@sirsicklick, You're so wrong. If it really wouldn't matter then why do any exercises before playing? And btw: it's not just about the fingers. It's about the muslces & tendons in hands, wrists, forearms,.... in fact it's about the whole body!
Some people just don't get it and should NOT upload anything. Basicly musicians ARE athletes. If you truly look at all the intense stuff that fingers do and how muscles and tendons in multiple body parts work together, then u might understand.
The thing that is really get me is one day i sound really fucking good and fast as hell. then the next day i feel awful when i get back on it. i am not as fast and after a couple of second my shoulder starts hurting.. so hopefully these will help
hey man i play guitar alot i recomend not worring about playin fast as hell instead feel every note you play play slower at first always then bild up (blues) and if you shoulder hurts u should try moving it in a deferent way find a strummin that most cumfy hope this helps at all haha
@BuDzManson hey man i play in a goddamn metal band wich is a genre that requires me [mabye not requires] to play fast. I like playing fast and heavy musiuc. Blues is to boring for me to be able to fucking listen to some of it..
the same as the last two years i've tried petruccis stretches and my arms start to feel inflamed.. :S am i doing these stretches wrong or something?

The vid title says "Warm Up Exercise #1", but he recommends to start with a STRETCH before warming up ???????
NEVER do that.
Warmup first & then stretch, not the other way around.
dorlandosonic 1 year ago
Thats in things like sports. For fingers it doesn't matter.

Errt. There are no muscles in the hands. You have to "warm-up" MUSCLES before you stretch them. You sir are wrong. ;)
sirsicklick 1 year ago
Dude, there are muscles in your hands, wrists, and fingers.
spaceace41 1 year ago
And I didn't say it didn't matter. I said it doesn't matter if you stretch before you warm up.

@ rockguitarpower: not quite original aren't you?

He credits Petrucci during the introduction. For a guitarist you don't seem to be able to listen very well.
