  • hey! one question: The Drummer of The Tubes has or not has a ramrod??? How he plays the drum??. Great music I love it

  • My favorite band is Metallica. I am a musician. That is Great!! Very Smart.

  • @josbo51715, What I'm talking about, is that In the movie, the singers were performed by: Jo Ann Harris, Cindy Leake and Patty Keene

  • Christina Aguilera must have seen this before making her video CANDYMAN. It had her playing multiple roles with a 1940's theme.

  • One of the best collaborations ever. Love this and this movie. Named my little girl after her, too.

  • Really, I had no idea this video existed nor the pairing of these two completely opposite schools these performers belong to . I really adore Olivia (though later in life,) but I would have disowned The Tubes long ago had I have known of this performance. Or would I?

  • If I remember correctly, in the movie, they originally wanted to have all three singers played by Olivia Newton-John, but for technical reasons, didn't... I'm glad this video shows what it would have looked like with three Olivias :-)

  • @Excalibear1 What are you talking about? All three of those women are Olivia. She just has different hair color.

  • Olivia is the hottest !!

  • Anyone else notice that the three girls are Olivia Newton John with different wigs? o.O

  • Vince Welnick got the short end of the stick as far as screen time goes.

  • @jockamofeena You can say that again.

  • awesome

  • I remember seeing that live--great memory.

  • the tubes rock

  • stupid damned lip syncing theyre doing. i have this track and it sounds exactly the same. stupid stupid lip syncing...

  • They have to do that so that the song sounds exactly like the recording on tv shows. I guess it is to make them look and sound good lol.

  • It's a video, not a live performance (which should be obvious since there are three Olivia's singing together at the same time). The Tubes were not on the Midnight Special w/ONJ that night.

  • No really?! I hate lip synching. Regardless.

  • It's so weird, in the movie they were going to use three Olivias for the "Dancin" scene, but they said they couldn't afford the technology it would take to do it (?). But they could afford the blue screen effects used in 80% of the movie?? Whatever. I thought the three Olivias would've made more sense in this scene, since Gene Kelly was obsessed with "Kyra" too.

Since I haven't said it lately, I LOOOVE Olivia AND the Tubes!! OXOXO!!

  • i think i like this better than the movie version

  • Same here........cheesey movie....good characters. Loved Gene Kelley, Olivia was clearly in here prime with those looks. The Tubes were just as awesome. I used to have the 'Xanadu" soundtrack on vinyl when I was a kid around 10 years old. E.L.O. and Jeff Lynne added to some of the soundtrack as well.

  • Yeah, I didnt really like the movie much, although I do think that this song was fantastic. A few ELO tunes were cool in it as well.

  • haha...i have a photo of the 3 girls singing,,and i have been tying to find where its from..now here it is! lol

  • haha you didn´t know it because this is not from the movie...I would have loved seen 3 Olivias in this scene of Xanadu instead of those 3 women but....I still remember the 1st time I saw Xanadu at cinema looking & looking to see if 1 of those 3 Andrew sisters where Olivia or not haha

  • Word.

  • Love it!

  • I'll make sure you pay the Fee. (I just got that after 20 years!)

  • anyone know if you can download just the rock bit because i love it but not the beginning stuff ! :P x

  • it's called skipping ahead moron!

  • okay no need to be a dick ! cant exactly skip ahead everytime i freaking listen to it !

  • I like the Tubes but man looks like Fee fell from the ugly tree and hit every branch coming down!!

  • Perhaps, but he's nowhere as rough to look at as Mark E. Smith of the Fall.

  • this is totally brilliant, thanks for sharing

  • The Tubes still rock hard!

  • Although it's too late now, wouldn't she be great on the US Soap Opera like "Guiding Light" where she could play Grady & Kane's Mother who comes to town to figure out who killed her son, or Kane's Aunt on Y & R, or Aiden's Mother on AMC, or Jax's Mother on GH.

  • I love Olivia Newton John .... so to see 3 of her it makes me so happy.

    Joe

  • Listen on January 1981 the entire world was waiting to see the very first video broadcast taped of her physical album done in video formats that did open the doors for MTV and who knows what after that, shame that Midnight Special was the only venue back then for an artist to showcase their stuff

  • When you THINK of the time period from which it originates, it speaks so CUTTING EDGE for ONJ, who plays three character parts here -- also, let's NOT forget she was THE FIRST MUSIC artist to film an entire VIDEO album in 1981 for "PHYSICAL", which opened a LOT of doors for the MTV artist.

  • Amen to that!! Growing up in a Hard Core R & B environment, she was the first White Singer I really loved listening to growing up. What I love about her is that she never got "messed up" by the system like alot of singers did. Also, don't you notice that Christina Aguilera did the exact same Video Format for Candyman.

  • Prior to the full length Physical video ONJ put out in 81, she shot single videos for A Little More Love, Deeper Than The Night & Totally Hot. They were shown on Casey Casem's countdown shows & on talk shows like Merv Griffin when she guested. She definitely was an artist of the late 70's early 80's who took advantage of the video as a promo tool, that's for sure! And the Physical video itself was pretty racy at the time too!

  • this is the music we r dancing to in a concert =]

  • The movie version has an ass-shot. Typical for network tv to 'dumb it down'.

  • cool

  • Love how The Tubes are singing "I won't take a back seat tonight" as they are taking a back seat to ONJ(s) singing at the end. haha!!

  • I'm Alive and All Over The World are indeed some of the best overproduced pop possible...I'd just like to note that this song is the ONLY known song known as 3rd Wave in Jazz to combine 1940s music with 1980s banned theatrical new wave glam rock. It's a rare creature and should be treated as such.

  • I agree with you 1000% Dalquaz. I remember seeing this on The Midnight Special when I was a Kid. I stayed up until 2:00 AM to watch it and it was so worth it.

  • The music is the exact same as the movie's soundtrack. I know they lip-sync in the movies, so I would guess this was the original copy, just recorded right as it was done for the movie? Man, I loved this movie when I was little. ^^

I was only 10 or so when I saw the movie for the first time. I grew up on the ELO songs "Alive" and "All over the world".

  • Didn't Christina do this for "Candy Man" ?

  • Wow what a blast from the past!

    Thanks!

  • The Tubes is one of the most under rated bands in rock. Excellent live. I saw them at Radio City in the mid eighties. They had the audience on their feet for the 'White Punks on Dope' finale.

  • Whoever found this, Than-you!!!!

  • I can't believe someone found this! I remember when this aired...I was like 10 years old and remember Olivia Newton John as the three singers and how it differed from the movie. The TUBES: AWESOME!

  • Thanks for sharing this; I didn't see it when it originally ran on TV. I wish they'd used the "three Olivias" in the movie, not only because those voices were all hers, but it would've looked better! She's so damn cute, and the Tubes are awesome.

  • For some reason, I'd love to see her guest on The Young & The Restless as Cane's Mother. You may not know this, but she won an Emmy Award a couple of years ago for writing a love song for Holden & Lily on As The World Turns.

  • One of the things that I loved about the Midnight Special is that it bought all kinds of musical genres together on the same stage. Kind of a link Between American Bandstand and Soul Train. When I was a kid, I used to think that the performances were "On" at Midnight. What a fool I was (ha! ha!). Sadly enough many of the acts are no longer with us.

  • The Tubes Rule!!! What ever happened to the Blonde? LOL

  • I guess Re Styles left The Tubes sometime between the shooting of the movie (where she's in) and this show.

  • Can you see Olivia re-doing this with Ashley and Vanessa? I actually imagined it.

  • Do you recognize the bass player? It's HSM director Kenny Ortega.

  • I believe that the bass player's name is Rick Anderson.

  • yes it is.

  • Kenny was one of the choreographers on Xanadu

  • According to the "Xanadu Preservation Society" website, the original idea was to have three Olivias in the movie but it wasn't left in the budget, so they cast three women--one of whom, Patty Keene, passed away just over one year after the film was released. R.I.P.

  • Hey how's Chloe doing, I heard she had a relapse.

  • i have never seen this thanks for posting this its wonderfull :)olivia newton john is sweet and sexy :)

  • esta cancion es buenisima

  • Great memories! Thanks!

  • Best part of "Xanadu" was the "Dancin'" sequence. Could watch it over and over again. And I think it was the Andrew Sisters they were throwing back to.

  • Thanks for posting! I saw this when it originally aired on midnight special. Loved it then and love it now...lol

  • I hope the Broadway show has kept the 40's music and style along with all the roller disco element.

  • The Broadway show was great. True to the "spirit" of the movie, but they totally did their own thing. Saw it twice.

  • Olivia is so beautiful, what more could a guy want, now there's three of them,i want more, Gotta love Olivia

  • this is how the Olivia part should have been filmed in Xanadu the movie - why they chose the 3 women singers who lipsynched ONJ so badly and were easy 20 years older than olivia was beyond me - thanks for posting this

  • they players were meant to be a throwback to to Mcguire Sisters.

  • This was and still is one of my all time favorite tunes!

I really dig the big band portion of this song! Are all 3 of those ladies Olivia Newton John? Its such an AWESOME tribute to THE ANDREW SISTERS!!! Yeah baby!!!

  • I really loved the music from the film but the film itself sucked rubber duckies lungs! Thanks for posting the video!

  • I didnt realize the Tubes were the one doing the rock part on this song. And I only listened to the soundtrack a million times hahahaha.

  • Heh, Christina Aguilera totally ripped off Olivia Newton-John for her "Candyman" vid

  • Very nicely done. I like the real three Olivia's.

  • Well, I'm American and I've always loved the UK and Australia anyway, but I love them even more for producing Olivia, a true gem of a talent, and one of the most beautiful women ever!

  • I havent seen this in 27 years - and I never forgot it.

    thanks for posting

here's to Xanadu coming to Broadway 6/07!!

  • Why are they bringing it to Broadway when it tanked at the Movies? EW once called it "a guilty pleasure" but the message is endless. If you want something and you work hard for it, it can become a reality. It's the type of music that I could see Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys doing.

  • I remember watching this on the Midnight Special in 1980 and staying up until 2:00 AM to watch this. It was telecast late on the East Coast.

  • People are talking about how "original" and "classy" Christina Aguilera is because she's trying out the Andrews sister's style in her latest slutty video. Meanwhile, not only were there the Andrews sisters, there's the lovely and truly classy Olivia, who tried this on for size the year "Xtina" was born!

Olivia knew how to do it well, without compromising herself, and still made well-deserved millions.

  • lol yeahh australia only brought her up :)

  • Hianda, if you are being technical the UK produced Olivia! :-)

  • Thank you. I love this song, it's brilliant the way it mixed the old and new. Olivia is one the best things my country (Australia) ever produced. :)

  • Very cool. I've never seen this. I always wondered why they didn't use the "three Olivia's" in the movie. Instead, it was her voices, but some strange looking women. I was traumatized!

  • Thanks for posting
