  • So Love is just a reproductive matter ? Why not ...

  • Love, the stuff of poets and pop-singers, is a feeling. Feelings are physiological states that arise as a physiological response to conditions of the endocrine system, which in turn are influenced by the nervous system.

    Thoughts (mostly subconscious ones) create feelings. External stimuli engender thoughts, which interact computationally with innate drives to create feelings, which in turn engender reactions, which in turn engender actions.....

  • ....The whole apparatus is a positive feedback system, which is why people lose their heads as well as get red in the face and knotted in the stomach when their hearts are stolen by a pretty face.

    The innate drives to survive and reproduce underly every operation of the mechanism we call body and every experience of the body state we call emotion. And the whole thing is interconnected - that's why there is an intimate relationship between love, mating rights and competition.

  • the selfish gene that programs the body's systems builds in mechanisms to encourage desire for sexual congress, the mechanism by which reproduction occurs. these mechanisms include excitement at the promise of congress and despair at its absence.

    and then things get complicated, because the survival mechanisms of positive and negative reinforcement utilise the same endocrinal triggers, so acquisition and possession of resources becomes confused with reproduction-initiated emotions.

  • ...so the lust for power and the lust for congress are entwined, which also explains why frustration (of either innate drive) is a cause of aggression and/or depression.

    it also partly explains why megalomaniacal religious leaders impose puritanical morals upon the populaces they desire to control.

  • the body's systems have imperfect steam-engine like governers;

    depending on their configuration in an individual, excitement can prompt desire for yet more excitement, leading to risk-seeking (thrill-seeking) behaviours.

    and depression can prompt yet more depression, leading to Boris Pasternak's "black slush"

    but in others, like Regina Spektor in her song "Apres Moi", the governor mechanisms work to prompt determination to escape the trap of despair, or...

  • ....or to provoke reflective, conscious examination of feelings and their causes by mentally stepping out of the personal situation and looking upon it, whereupon the trap and its deluge simply melt away
