  • OK, there's a little vocal strain. That's what happens when you've been performing regularly for your fans for (at that point) 35 years. There's not an opera singer alive who would log as many hours on stage as Diana. And she's really grooving here, hitting a lot of soulful notes. And how about a little gratitude that she did a very unusual song and sounded very close to the record. I was at this very show and thought it was the highlight.

  • Diana is getting rave reviews from fans and critics on her current tour! The crowds love her and she is loving them back with powerhouse performances at each gig!

Bottom line, she is a megastar who still

    Got it!!!

  • It's amazing how one woman can have so much talent. Diana is the worlds eight wonder. The lady is a force indeed!!!

  • This is one of the best live performances that I've seen by Miss Ross. It's a great song with a great arrangement but it's not easy to sing however she comes through brilliantly like the artist she is. I was also amazed by the background vocals. It certainly sounds like more that two Supremes but the bottom line is that ir is an unforgettable performance by Ross and all.

  • LEGEND!!!!!!!

  • AMAZING PERFORMANCE BY AN AMAZING INTERNATIONAL STAR, DIANA IS THE BEST!

  • MISS ROSS IS THE STANDARD OTHERS ARE COMPARED TOO, LIKE IT OR NOT!

  • Mary did not do the tour because get no profits from souvenir sales and because she was told "all you have to do is show up." After investing her life in keeping the Supremes alive commercially and artistic, she found that insulting and demeaning and indicative that she would be treated like the hired help. Cindy likewise became concerned about how she would be treated. Diana didn't have the insight to just split everything three ways; it was something she couldn't find the courage to do.

  • am gonna see her in vegas next week. can hardly wait,,

  • WOW!!!..YOu would NEVER have known that Diana, Scherrie, and Lynda had not recorded together as the Supremes from hearing this. They SOUND SOOO Good together.

  • Stunning stunning stunning.... shes's in rare form here. xxx God bless the child that became DIANA ROSS x

  • She sounds absolutely wonderful here like always! I was Blessed to see the Return To Love Tour in Atlanta on June 22nd, 2000! I have seen her several times in person, she always looks and sounds flawless. Too bad Mary and Cindy were too silly and greedy to do this tour, it was still great anyway, Diana reigns Supreme regardless!!! About to see her again in Atlanta on the current solo tour in Atlanta on June 4th, 2010 and can hardly wait!!!

  • I've seen Diana about 20 times in London and she has always been great , sometimes absolutely stunning but i have never seen a performance like this.

The audience this night must have gone home in a state of euthoria, this is a fantastic experience.

Who needs the long forgotten Mary and Cindy when Diana is hot like this.

And for those who see the cancellation of this tour as a failure, just see how she came back in London in 2002 and 2004, the best reviews of her career.

  • Best version of this song ever recorded.

  • Love u miss ross ure the best xx

  • as long as Diana lives she will never let the girls or no girls get close to her on stage like she did in the 60s once she knew she was going solo that was it.,She is always going to have the spot light.I think the last time she really blended with the girls was in like 1968,after that she really stood as far away from them as she could.

  • One thing about Motown, they could rehash their songs and different artist can always put a different spin on them and make them sound different. Miss Ross has always said she never tries to oversing a song because she doesn't try to strain her voice that's why she enunciates her words. I think she was in great voice and i've always loved this rendition.

  • Listen youz lot...when all is said and done,at the end of the day,Diana's legend is exactly what it is!!She was ,at the zenith of her career,THE female vocalist of her era...there wasn't a person alive who could match (let alone out do!!) her!!When she performed live (as she has, since being a teenager!!) she absolutely shone, and the spectacular energy and aura that literally throbbed out of her,was absolutely breath taking and mind numbing in it's magnificence and thass it...FACT...end of!!

  • Thank You, for posting, this is the first time I'd heard her sing it live, 40 years later after I bought the surrender album. It was worth the wait!!

  • i love her and i dont care what they may say she is a legend and that said please all else need not apply ever !!!!

  • It never ceases to amaze me the lengths Ross-haters will go to justify their jealousy of this woman. One makes up a story on the spot & the others immediately believe it, no matter how ABSURD it is, especially when it concerns this tour.

They need to let it go. They've no idea how pathetic they look, whining over a 10 year-old tour, of all things

  • Haters want Mary & Cindy on the tour only b/c they wanted, desperately, to bask in the reflected "glory" of those w/ whom they identify-for various reasons-being back in the spotlight, all the while refusing to acknowledge that said spotlight is all about Diana Ross, as to do so would be to acknowledge that the world loves her and rejects them & everything they're about-the real reason for their disdain of her.

  • You know what would have made this work: if Diana had Mary and Cindy as the "real" Supremes and Scherrie and Lynda as the two background singers.

  • I think that she's always known for being superb and perfect that when theres a difference in her voice,a true fan will notice but it takes nothing from her..she is human

  • let me be clear that in no way was i criticizing mis ross,i was simply sayn i hear the strain in her voice...I LOVE HER

  • No worries, mahogany. I noticed an overheated discussion and felt I had to remove some of the comments. Your responses remained decent, it was the other part that went a bit over the edge.

I just try to prevent my clips from becoming a platform for catfights & mudthrowing.

  • thnx sweety please post more videos of my girl like what is she doing now a days

    ? thnx

  • @NilesNL69 I think she sounds fantastic here. I find that "strain" in her voice to be rather sexy.

  • @mahoganyflame Do you know how old she is, she has been singing all her iife, and true fans are just happy she left the house so that they can see her one last time live before she dies!!!

  • not sure why people started saying she wasn't a good singer, she was untouchable in her prime and here she sounds great.

  • for some reason diana ross's struggle to stardom upsets so many people. they love to criticize her but hate to give her props she deserves

  • Isn't there a better video of this live performance out there? One where she doesn't mess up the VERY IMPORTANT "ring my phone" lyric? I love that one. The color is much better on her dress. She also sits down on the stairs, and then the Supremes come in, and all three of them walk forward....very dramatic. Lovely. Someone please post that video. Thanks.

  • Sorry folks. Scab Supremes here.

  • @Drillin4Oil Nope, they were supremes who were on hit tracks back in the 70's. they are not the original but they are supremes non the less.

  • What I meant was they took Mary and Cindy's rightful places for (far) less money. There is nothing authentic about this "trio." They never even made a record together!

  • I saw the Return to Love tour when it came to Houston in 2000, I love the version of this song than It is so good to see again. The whole concert was excellent.

  • She sounds great! But of course the tour was a big failure! A Supremes Reunion WITHOUT The "real" Supremes! If Mary and Cindy had been on the tour it would have been a big hit! But Mary didn't want to do the tour because she wanted more money! Diana even offered her 1 million more herself and that talentless backroundsinger was still not happy! She wanted the same money as Diana Ross! Diana became the star in The Supremes because she worked harder and loved the stage more!

  • correction diana offered to double what Mary was offered & that dinner theater singer turned her down out of resentment & spite. too bad would have been the tour of a lifetime.

  • yep, jealousy, as they say, is a curse. but mary had a win...she helped turn her home country against diana. but it did help mary in other ways...she was able to play huge megastadiums and tour the world as a glmaorous diva who could pull crowds of 15000...NOT!

  • ha nha ah ha ha! So true. Listen to the background singers. They are great! Even Scherrie and Lynda needed some support. Can you imagine how Mary and Cindy would have sounded? Even Diana doesn't sound the same today.

  • The truth be known, Mary and Cindy at the last minute accepted 3 million each, Diana nixed it and instead took Lynda and Scherrie for peanuts which was her plan all along. Diana got her way and the tour bombed. If Mary and Cindy were on the bill, all 3 could have more money than anybody would have imagined and they could have toured worldwide for YEARS! In the end, they couldn't even do 11 shows and not one sellout. They were giving away tickets in NYC to make it look that way. Shame :(

  • I was at the last RTL show in NYC. This looks like that performance. When she started singing this song my friend and I looked at each other absolutely stunned. This was a huge treat and the evening's showstopper. Suddenly it was 1972. As far as I know, this song was never on her concert playlist. Almost 30 years later she sounds wonderful on it. Same riffs, curls and bends. Maybe a tiny bit hoarse towards the end but still in control.

  • Yes she sounds great here!

  • Regardless if she had canceled this tour she still would have gotten bad press. Really a shame she got all the flack when everyone including the promoters said the difficult one was Mary. I hardly think her career is a tragedy. She just came off a sold out world wide tour .Played 3 sold out shows at The Hollywood Bowl & got rave reviews. Her children are successful in their own right. She seems to have made peace w. Mary Wilson. Almost every female vocalist out there would kill for her career.

  • @tobeydicaprio couldn't have put it better x

  • I wish she had just done the Supremes songs all by herself with an ace band like the Funk Brothers (and no klutzy dancers).

No Mary. No Cindy. No Scherrie. No Lynda.

That concert tour would have been a hit. Diana Ross Unplugged. This concert that did tour did not have any emotional connection (and they couldn't use the incredible video from the '60s of the Supremes' performances....which SUCKED big time for fans).

  • @OldMotownFan I think diana is a bigger person thatn that. i think she was trying to give the supremes a chance to shine in a big way again. lynda and scherrie, mary and cindy. the money mary was offered could not take away the years of jealousy and hatred she hadd towards diana. this song sounds great for diana's age and is a favourite of a lot of her fans.

  • Um....okay.

  • Love this version of this song. Diana sounds great and she actually recorded this solo and not with the Supremes.

  • Great performance, she was just a little hoarse. Rehersal had to be tough

  • I was at the show here in NY and it was packed ans the crowd went wild of course, but yes I do agree she did not need all those dancers running all over the place it was just too much, the fans wanted her.Scherrie and Lynda were ok the next day the show suddenly cancelled thank god I went to MSG not Jones beach the next day it never happened.

  • Yeah but it was not all about just you fans-- her audience is often compiled of people who don't follow her like you do. we wanted the singers dancers and all She is a pro and she knew that! It was a Great Show!

  • vocally brilliant, but not an once of chemstry between Ross and the gals

  • MY GOD!!

    I GET GOOSBUMPS

    SOOO MAGICAL

  • i wish losers would stop going on about mary bloody wilson and fat flo

diana should never have agreed to change the name of the group to diana ross and the supremes

she should have left then and become the the great diana ross earlier

flo and mary had little presence

    diana was always the star

can anyone imagine either of them doing Lady sings the blues, or being nominated for a best actress oscar?

mary has tried to make a career so many times in the last four decades

    noone is interested

  • i do hear a big strain in her voice to hit the notes, and i wish she would have just sang softer and slower,it would have given a better reception but, i love her still and always

  • yep. Her voice shows some strain. Common after many years and esp while on tour.

  • She gave Scherrie and Lynda the royal treatment on this tour. But the show went in the wrong direction with the distracting dancers and other well-intended but bad production decisions. Three ladies at three microphones would have done it just fine. Scherrie and Lynda are superb singers and were terrific.

  • I actually liked the recording of this song. I'm sorry, but she was reaching for something and not quite getting it on this one.

  • I TOTALLY DISAGREE-- I LOVE TO HEAR HER BELT OUT SONGS LIVE LIKE THIS--HER VOCALS HAVE MATURED AND SHE USES IT WELL. anything she does she will be criticized. GO DIANA ROSS GO!

  • she has been criticized for the last 30 years and yet she still shines. go diana ross!

  • Yes, the highest notes 38 years after she first recorded this are a little high for her, so what? She worked the song out.

  • i ca hear a difference in her voice, but her interlretation is still magical and dreamy

    love!!!

  • I still think there's a comeback in there, and don't forget about europe. She still does arenas there.

  • I think Diana should sing in a lower key she often sings in a higher range that comes off out of tune, often not pleasing to the ears. But I'm still one of her biggest fans.

  • She's not out of tune here.

  • IMO Diana and the girls should've done Chain Reaction together on this tour. It's very Supreme-ish to me.

  • It was a tragic day in MUSIC HISTORY when this tour was cancelled. These three ladies were magnificant.

  • @avventura3 Hardly tragic. Scherrie and Lynda did not belong here and that's why it was canceled. Truth wins out.

  • @Drillin4Oil But i would have loved diana to make an album with these two singers back in the 70...they would have been awesome.

  • "Reach Out I'll Be There" should be instead of "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" on her set list for upcoming concerts.

  • Diana sounded and seemed more "Supreme" performing here on this 1971 solo hit of hers with '70s Supremes Lynda and Scherrie backing her there onstage, than she sounded and appeared doing her '60s Supremes hits onstage with them elsewhere during the show. Love this song and her performance of it. Makes you think about what DRATS may have sounded or looked like if Diana'd stayed with Mary and Cindy into the '70s..

  • these three supremes sounded fantastic together!! i wish they had recorded some of the concert for a dvd.

  • i was blessed enough to c this show 2 in chicago, and ill never 4get this! she sat on the steps and belted her heart out to this rare gem from surrender, which is also one of my faves. does anyone have it on here or at least have if you see him? loves it!!

  • if you see him is a great track...i loved it...a different sound for diana.

ánd if you see him, tell him i love him' simple lyrics with a great beat and diana's beautiful voice.

  • This performance takes my breathe away. To think, she sang this live."Ring My Bell"

  • Wow - this is going back some - taken from the 'I'm still waiting/Surrender' Album - 1970 - Brilliant album bytheway - Classics songs such as 'Remember Me' - 'I'm still waiting' - and of course 'Reach out, i'll be there'

  • I attended the last RTL performance at Madison Square Garden (and almost didn't go in protest of no Mary and Cindy). I'm so glad i did go. The ONLY disappointment for me was not hearing "Someday W'ell Be Together"! Whatever the case, when she started singing this song...i can't describe the feelings of memories from my VERY early childhood that came over me. It really was emotional! Ross as so many classics (Supremes & solo) that I'd love to hear her incorporate into her live set...just listen!

  • I think the reason why "Someday We'll Be Together" wasn't performed was because Diana knows she cannot sing that song with Mary and Cindy by her side. It doesn't work any other way.

  • You've got a good point (i actually thought of that while I was there)! Then again...Mary and Cindy aren't singing on the record and "SDWBT" is one of their most soulful songs (if not THE most soulful) in my opinion!

  • Mary and Cindy weren't really on the "Someday, We'll Be Together" recording, even though it was released as a Diana Ross & the Supremes recording. All of the background vocals were already recorded when the demo was sent to Berry Gordy for consideration. Diana simply dropped her lead vocal into the already existing recording. She didn't sing it with The Supremes until they performed it live in concert. That's the truth. Don't believe me. Check Motown history.

  • You are 100% correct. I know Mary and Cindy aren't on the song, but she wouldn't sing it on the tour because of what it was connected to which was Mary and Cindy. I am a SUPER HUGE Supremes guru, so I knew the history behind the song. Actually, "Someday We'll Be Together" was originally assigned to Junior Walker & The All-Stars, then later assigned to just Diana Ross as a possible first single. But Shelley Berger and Berry Gordy felt it was best if it was The Supremes last single.

  • But Mary or Cindy NEVER recorded "Someday" anyway, Diana recorded it on her own with a few back up singers, as with "Love Child".

  • I know they never recorded "Someday." They didn't record "Love Child" or "Forever Came Today" or any single except things with Temptations after 1967. I am just saying, people know that "Someday" is a swan song for Diana, Mary and Cindy and Diana would not perform it unless Mary and Cindy were by her side!

  • But don't forget they were on the live version in 1970

  • Why not? Since Mary and Cindy are not on the original recording. A group call the Andantes were the ones doing that beautiful harmony behind Ross singing her heart out.

  • remember ashford and simpson produced this album and they were the ones doing the background.

  • It wasn't the Andantes that time; it was the Waters Sisters.

  • Love this. Question, why have so many videos / subscriptions been removed? Diana knocked this song out of the ballpark in her performance at the Pantages Theater here in Los Angeles on 11/8/2004. Thank you Niles.

  • Paul, my whole account got removed, this is the second attempt in hopefully not stepping on someone's c.infringements toes ;-)

  • I cannot believe I got to see Diana this live. So beautiful, especially considering how recent this vocal performance is.

  • What performance? I saw her do this here in L.A. at the Pantages and the gurrl SAAANG.

  • Because I missed the short-lived Return to Love tour, it was a huge treat to see this performance. Reach Out (I'll Be There) has always been one of my favorite singles of hers, and I never heard her sing it live. The New York Times gave her tour a stunning review after she and the Supremes peformed at Madison Square Garden and specifically mentioned this song. I never thought I would actually get a chance to see it. Thanks so much for this and all the other Ross bits you have put on here.

  • You're welcome ;-)

  • Gurlfriend is sanging!!!!!!!!

  • Wow, I've never seen her do this live.

  • Amazing vocals from all three Supremes! I remember Rolling Stone at the time had a blurb about how they were blown away by Diana's vocals on this song.

  • Really, wow. Wish I had that review. Fantastic cover, isn't it?

  • Sang!!!
