@fdsfdsfdsism you prob didn't notice but I was installing Windows 7 in Windows Vista. If you looked at the date this video was published, Windows 7 was not released as yet. The Windows 7 that I was installing on Virtualbox was a beta. If you notice that the default desktop wallpaper was a fish and not the Windows logo.

@paulradford2008 The Virtualbox interface is a lot different now. This video was created in 2009. You first have to create the virtual machine then run it. A popup will appear asking you to insert DVD or choose ISO file.

@MegaTedi007 It means that it uses 512mb of your RAM when it is running. If it is not running then no RAM will be used. Most people have 4GB+ so 512mb usage while running won't really affect the performance of the computer. Well only if lots of other high memory usage programs are running at the same time.

@MegaTedi007 yes you can create the virtual machine without the ISO but you will need the ISO to install it on the virtual machine. Each type of virtual machine(xp, 7, linux etc) has its own default configuration(memory allocation, harddrive usage etc) to ensure that when you install the OS that it will run without problems.

@blazed101 Depends on the amount of memory you allocated to it. If you use the default setting for the virtual operating system then you should be ok. Only thing is that the virtual OS might be slow. Increasing the RAM for the virtual OS should smoothen things out but might lower the performance of the host system.

@TheGasMasks 16gb is the preferred size. Windows 7 should take up about 9gb of that space though. 512Mb of memory is the default memory usage for the virtual windows 7. You can increase or decrease however you wish but it would affect performance either for good or bad.

Great video, bro. It helped me heaps. Strangely it did not ask me for the windows key. I assume because my laptop came with it pre-installed (I have over written the os and made it ubuntu-native with windows 7 in virtualbox). So far so good. Your anti-virus on your computer may detect it but if your virtual machine gets infected then it usually stays in the virtual machine.There's no reason to have an anti-virus in a virtual machine. Just create a snapshot and if something goes wrong or you get infected then just restore the snapshot and it'll be clean again.

Try not to use a 64-bit installation DVD or ISO. To my knowledge though, you won't be given a blue screen but a black screen. Make sure the DVD/ISO is not corrupted or missing files. Make sure the size of the virtual machine is large enough (16 GB is best) to contain the operating system (9 GB).

quick overview how Virtual Box works.

1.-create an OS name and settings(not the OS itself)

2.-let u boot the OS from a disk( yes u need the disk of the OS u r about to install)

3.-no need to erase hard disk ( very useful)

4.-run applications for various OS without having to erase hard disk,keep in mind, u need to OS installation disk.

C:? I know with the default setting Virtualbox puts your virtual harddisks in the documents folder. You probably changed something for it to be in the C drive. Well go to File > Preferences and change the location in the general tab.

I have the new one, they just changed the places that you find them. I think it automatically recognizes CD/DVD, to choose an ISO, I think that you have to go to devices in the menu after you installed the OS. It's not difficult just explore and you'll find it.

They have to temporary turn it off to install certain drivers for VirtualBox. VirtualBox has it own network driver and without it you won't be able to use the internet on the virtual machine.

Depending on the OS. Of course you can change the amount of memory that is being used. XP automatically uses 128 MB of memory and runs smoothly. Vista or 7 may need more to run smoothly. I think they are automatically set to 256 or 512, can't remember.

There is no 26-bit color mode, you mean 24-bit. Mines say that too but when i check the display settings in the OS it's 32-bit color mode. If you're so bothered about it then maybe you should mount the "virtualbox guest editions" iso file and install it on the windows 7 virtual machine. Just like how you mounted windows 7 iso, the drop down menu will show you the "Virtualbox guest editions."

* The problem you can have with this though is that you are not able to partition your hard drive because vista thinks that your hard drive is full since some system files can be found at the end of the hard drive. 16 gb is recommended by Microsoft for the 32 bit version and 20gb for the 64 bit version. It will not take away the full amount of space, only about 9gb after install but adding programs etc into that machine will increase it. Once you remove the machine, all of your space will be restored. So no it doesn't really take away your space because you can get it back easily.
