im stuck on the 2nd bar, decide to listen to a recording and... haha no way im gonna learn this in time for my competition.. along with the pagainin concerto..... and this is just for round 1..
that's barely a ricochet stroke if you ask me. He's kinda like Peter Zimmerman who kinda just moves the bow really fast and hopes it bounces a little.
@quantumturbo This piece is pretty much off string. He's mostly doing ricochet bowing...In some parts of the piece, he is playing difficult double stops
Liszt does this one on piano. I don't know what that saltato? or violin technique is but it's hard to make the bow jump lightly from string to string with the spiccato marks. Mendellsohn uses this in second mov violin con.The liszt went several revisions first he wrote it for intervals.Impossible on our pianos today. The final version is rather easy on piano even with the thirds and easily memorizable for most!
Does anyone know if there's a CD out there with all Paganini's caprices on it? I love these things. When Chemistry gets me down I just listen to this and I feel better instantly
@trotskyfication You think so? I think it sounds really cool and the technique gives it an awesome effect. It's probably one of my favorites. I can see why someone wouldn't like it so much, though.
@mdeonx16 right, but generic sweep arpeggios sound so stale compared to this... im a guitar player, I can't sweep very well (yet), but i wish what i CAN do would sound more like this :D
this is better than perlman. the thirds are much faster, and the richochet is...healthier....the end is amazing- the last four lines are amazing fast and good played.
@BobBobGobGob have you watched leonidas kavakos, cause hes pretty amazing, infact i think his notes mabie even sound a little stronger, mabie just audio quality though.
to avoid misunderstandings. Paganini violin for me the best of all time. But not the best composer. Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart ... if they are the best musicians ever.
"what you were trying to do is show off and shut others down. Get a life. " And you think you are doing..?
Uhm, chill out? It's really not something to get anal about. "Beyond unfounded"? So they took some completely random violin and showed it? Also, the resolution of this video is too poor to see the strings in this video.
It's like teaching a 2nd grader. "If you can't say something nice, don't say it at all." Do everybody a favor and learn this before making ludicrous accusations.
Assuming the violin that spins (~1:05) is the violin he is playing on, those are not Dominants. Dominants have a solid color winding, and a different color for every string. All of the strings here have the same color winding, and it looks like there is a spiral doing down the winding of a different color.
This all said, I know nothing about this violinist or any claims he may have made about using a certain string. All I can tell you is the violin spinning does not have dominants on it.
"Nobody cares what kinds of strings are on the spinning violin." "The question was about what sort of strings he uses, not how he makes or gets his sound."
Completely ridiculous as well. The point is, anyway, that this piece is very difficult and it sounds terrific when he plays it. Enough said.
@chatastic2008 Professionals at this level do not practice much in a day. Usually most of their improvement has already finished during their childhood (or young adulthood). Very busy soloists mostly travel, or are rehearsing with the orchestra.
and as a side note, the caprices were intended to be practice (prerequisites) songs for the much bigger pieces paganini wrote.
Yeah if you want to develop physical problems. If you have to practice more than 6 hours per day to make marked improvement, you might want to put the violin down and study medicine.
The amount of time one practices is negligible after a certain point - 3-4 hours a day is perfecly good. What one has to do is ensure that every minute of practice is good practice. I could practice 12 hours a day, but if I did was play the Dmaj scale, I won't get anywhere.
I'm not arguing against practicing for vast expanses of time; if I had free time, that's what I would do. What I'm saying is that it isn't necessary - one could become an excellent player without investing his time to that extent. While extensive periods of practice are nice, one could be just as good a player with time to spare.
In other words, practicing that long isn't bad - it's can be beneficial. It's just that one doesn't need to spend that long practicing to become a virtuoso.
umm if it makes sense . . . place the bow on the string, and keep your elbow rigid and move it up and down in order to bring the bow along all 4 strings, then once thats sorted, introduce the bounce by flicking your wrist on the downward motion, the bow should bounce naturally . . .
Try moving the elbow up and down more, tighten the bow at first if you need to. Maybe begin with a simpler piece with this effect in it... I like the Joachim cadenza in Mendelssohn's violin concerto,
there's a lot more to ricochet technique than can be expressed in just a few lines. if you aren't an advanced level player have patience and listen to your teacher if you have one:) but there are sites in the internet if you search that give you lots of tips and videos on bow techniques.
All I can say is that it's very, very difficult and requires a lot of practice and killer timing. Ask your violin teacher; it may take a few lessons to get this right.
When you start out, play it on open strings. Later, play something easier than this - for example, the section in Mendelssohn violin concerto.
I hope to be able to play this piece some day - we shall see.

Paganini most likely composed all of his pieces while he was fooling around on his violin. I imagine he's better than any violinist that has ever played.

Paganini was world reknowned at the time and even had a public and some say victorious "duel" with Joseph Joachim. So i'd say, since no others at the time were making such an impact on virtuosity, he was probably the "best".
