Im a DOP myself and we're most likely using the arri on our next shoot so i'm doing my research. I've been hearing that it has a great dynamic range, im just curious what light set ups you used?. On another more creative note i liked the short, although you used shallow DOF heavily i think it worked well...what lenses were you using?
@supra1981 Hey There, glad you liked the short. We used Cooke S4's (I can't remember the specific lenses sorry), the ASA was 800 (interiors), 1600 (night exteriors) and Gamma was Log C. Lights we used for the exteriors was a single HMI to brighten the mid-ground and the rest was available light. For the interiors it was LED light panels. Hope that helps.
But I have to agree with another comment on the voice over. Not a bad voice, but too young to match the character. No sense of real experience in the voice. Good read, but not convincing. Didn't sound like he had faced a life threatening experience, like a killing or a meeting with a Hollywood producer.... :-) I look forward to seeing more of your work.
@probonovox thanks for watching the short, glad you enjoyed it. It was the actor in the short that did the voice over, I'll be sure to tell him that he sounds young. Thanks for the feedback.
Wow this is great! I would say that it needed a cinema scope (black bars) on the footage to really put the icing on the cake with making this short even more cinematic!
you went cheapo on the sound. The VO in particular. The details do matter. and when u raise the bar on visual -- it make anything less than -- look even more subpar.
@geffabr Very true. Also, Red has streamlined their workflow for both industry and independents alike while the alexa it would seem is mostly for the big boys. At the end of the day they're both tools and it's how you use them to get what you want. Thanks for the comment.
@geffabr Not off the top of my head, but the camera almost a year old, so I would figure some productions that have just started up in recent months since last August. I know for sure the new Michael Mann TV series for HBO 'Luck' is using them.
@TheChocSprinkles just downloaded the 1080p Anonymous trailer. Great, crystal clear image. Now they just need to scale their frame size up to 4k or plus to get it to IMAX screens. This last sunday I watched an IMAX movie for the first time. Super 8. It's impressive the details you can see on that screen size.
BTW, this Anonymous seems to be a good movie. Will watch it for sure.
@geffabr Bond 23 cinematographer Roger Deakins has just confirmed shooting the new Bond with Arri Alexa. check IMDB on technical specs or google Bond 23, there plenty of articles on it. Also a Tom Hanks film was shot entirely on Alexa. cheers
@vimeocomuk they shot with available he said, so therefore the DP must have shot this with a pretty fast lens, so of course he have a shallow depth of field
One question. I've been hearing that one of the optimal ISO's for it is 800. What f-stop did you use for the lens for this film? Were there variable f stops for each scene, or did you use a universal one.
@ARehal Hey. First of all sorry for no giving an opinion for your short. :) I liked it, well shot, well done, good acting and not a bad story. After watching this short i watched a video from scott mcintyre who was the cc editor. And I saw it wasn't so noisy. I thought the camera was shitty but now i can see it is not. I think i'm falling in love with this camera :). thnx for the answer and go on on your way of filmmaking!!
@BRAINYSTUFF I believe its because looking at their specs, they have a somewhat high ASA at 1600, your going to usually get a decent amount of grain but i think it kinda works to me, kinda a gritty feel...I like it! The Alexa is one fine camera, not sure If i like the RED better though....
@stalbetoube I wouldn't say that there were too many close ups. For this kind of narrative I would say close ups are your friend. Also, I think the soft focus subjects were also a stylistic choice. The movement in and out of the focus range kept the feeling of "never settling" present.

@ARehal If he took it down an octave, it would have sounded better. One technique I use I call "WWMFD?" "What would Morgan Freeman do? LOL
BTY are you using Zeiss Primes?

@probonovox we used Cooke S4's for the shoot. I'll be sure to use the Morgan Freeman technique for next time.

The image of this camera is amazing. Wish now it just were smaller, 4k and cheaper. Ow, that's Red Epic. Lol.
Epic just lack one thing in my humble opnion. Dynamic Range.

why does every other short film have to be set around people with guns?
the cinematography was classy. alexa is a classy digital camera

is this just me or in low light it's quite noisy?? is this from the camera, youtub compression, color correction???
BRAINYSTUFF 1 year ago
@BRAINYSTUFF I think it's from the youtube compression mostly, but we shot mostly with available light to see how much we could push the camera.

anything you put on youtube will never be the full raw export. it sucks. the best cameras will always look less then what you would think.
