  • The more I listen, "My Guardian Angel", and "Long, last, lonely mile" are the musical suicide note from Doug. I don't understand Spanish that well, but, it seems to be the same as the: "now I lie myself to sleep..."

  • Also, again, if you like the Gin Blossoms, listen to Hopkins singing the themes of "F-troop, and Scobby-Doo" during a break. Hopkins died way too young, he was an alcoholic, fired by the record company.

  • I would also recommend "My Guardian Angel", "Ponyboy and Johnny", and "Cathedral City" (though the Gin Blossoms played that song also), from the Chimeras/Pistoleros, as some later Hopkins songs, before he killed himself.

  • Chimeras and Pistoleros were the last band Doug worked with after he got fired from the Gin Blossoms. "long, last, lonely mile" was a solid exit song.

  • Love the guitar on this version :) Thank you for posting.

  • Saw these guys at Summerfest about 7 years ago in Milwaukee. Great show and of course great voice.

  • This is a superb version of an awesome song! :)

THIS is the way to sing this song for someone

  • @jmorris724 Talk about a sociopath. What is wrong with you that after a month you had to come back here and attack me for simply liking both Doug and Scotty? You troll up the page with about a dozen insane and homophobic comments and for what? Me having a different opinion than you regarding the band. Lighten up bud. You're taking this way too seriously. It's just differing opinions on music. Go spam someone else.

  • @jmorris724 This will be my last word on this. I really don't care what you say to me, but I think that you need to grow up. I guarantee you that acting like an offensive nut is not a desirable trait. You have to learn to accept differing opinions and not go crazy when someone disagrees with you. Youtube's a good place for discussion but with the attitude that you have, nobody's going to want to put up with you. I hope you gain some manners and maturity, for your own sake. So long.

  • @ thorbie ....I agree.Competition smile off CIS is my favorite GB songCheck out No Chocolate Cake

  • sweet version. Co-written by Marshall Crenshaw! Original from Empire Records soundtrack, 1995... a jangly power pop hit in the post-grunge alt-rock '90s.

  • sends shivers up my spine! amazing!!!!!

  • this is such an amazing song!

  • Great song, great band... it's a shame one of the guitarist died!!!

  • That was Doug Hopkins, but he died years before this song was written. Not a lot of people seem to know his work.

  • @zaccds True fans should know his work. Since it put them on the map. I'm sure the guys are eternally grateful for Doug doing what he did for them even if they didn't show it before he died. Everytime I hear their new stuff I want those Doug Hopkins riffs in the so bad but they are just not there... Anyways... Good stuff. You have lots of it.

  • awesome songs guys!!!<3

  • The mp3 anyone???

if so then much appreciated ^_^

  • Great Band! Totally awsome.

  • i looove this song.

hey guys, which other songs are good from gin blossoms??

  • There are tone of great songs from GB. Just to name a few, Hey jealousy, Found Out About You, Allison Rode, Mrs. Rita, Follow You Down.

  • dont forget Lost Horizons!

  • until i fall away is also nice

  • @laladrto super girl , learning the hard way to add a few more

  • @foxman123456789 learning the hard way? super girl? C'mon! Their best songs were mostly those written when Doug was in the band. Lost Horizons, Allison Road...

  • @jmorris724 I thought CIS was pretty damn good actually. Follow You Down, Day Job, Not Only Numb, My Car are all amazing songs on par with many on NME in my opinion.

  • @Thorbie other than "whitewash", most of its pretty rough sounding. Without doug they just became another garage band.

  • @jmorris724 I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I personally think Not Only Numb is one of the most beautiful Gin Blossoms songs ever written. With and without Doug, the band has produced a number of jangle pop hits which hold up today. Post CIS is another story though.

  • @Thorbie Can we at least agree on this: Hopkins played with a thousand times more passion than Johnson. I really don't see how anyone would disagree with that.

  • @jmorris724 I don't know. I think both are great guitarists in terms of skill. I think Doug's a much better song writer than Johnson of course, but in terms of passion, I'd say both are great, although Doug has more stage presence and is more fun to watch. In terms of song writing Doug has more passion than Scotty, but I think some of what Scotty's contributions to CIS make up key elements of the overall Gin Blossoms sound. I just like the band overall.

  • @Thorbie Just foolin around on youtube when i saw our conversation from a month ago. I've really been opening my mind to different kind of music lately, and while I must say that I haven't heard all of Johnson's songs, one must keep in mind if not for Hopkins, we most likely would not even be talking about The Gin Blossoms. He is indeed the reason they are famous, and this is pretty close to indisputable.

Sure, Robin has a great voice, but look where that got the Gas Giants...

  • @jmorris724 I don't think that's a fair comment. Scotty's toured with the Gin Blossoms for years now and cowrote a number of great songs on CIS. The band probably wouldn't be where it is without Hey Jealousy, but Follow You Down and Til I Hear it From You were great songs too, not to mention Mrs. Rita, Until I Fall Away etc. You could easily say they all owed Alex Chilton, Paul Westerberg, Tommy Keene and Pat DiNizio. In regards to Gas Giants, Doug's other bands never took off either. Just sayin

  • @jmorris724 You're misrepresenting what I said earlier. I never said they were equal. In terms of Doug v. Scotty, Doug is a more talented songwriter and a more entertaining performer to watch. As guitarists, I'd say they're equally skilled though. Scotty can solo with the best of them without breaking a sweat. I just don't think it's fair to single Scotty out when he's actually been with the band longer than Doug was. Doug's songs are great, but I doubt they would have been...

  • ...as popular without the rest of the components of the Gin Blossoms sound. Robin's distinctive vocals, Jesse's country influences, Bill's constantly moving bass lines and Phil's solid drumming all contributed to bring out the best of Doug's songs. Many of Doug's songs went unnoticed for years with different bands and while a member of the Chimeras, he didn't find the same success either. It's not all about Doug. As a unit, they were great. Day Job, Follow You Down and Til I Hear It From You...

  • ...were all great songs written by Robin, Jesse, Scotty, Bill and Phil and I think they're just as good as some of Doug's songs and better than a few others. Doug had a firey passion for songwriting, but he wasn't the sole reason for the band's success. I think CIS stacks up against NME pretty well as an album of comparable quality without any songwriting by Doug. I see that you like Doug and I do too, but why so adversarial about it all? The rest of the band has paid its dues too.

  • @jmorris724 Dude, what is your problem? First you necropost on a discussion we had a month ago, then you some how can't handle that I like both Doug and Scotty? Now you can't stand my calm "attitude"? Did I offend you in some way or are you having a bad day or something? I've heard of Robin's band (Gas Giants and Pharoahs 2000 were the same band) and Jesse's Low/Watts and solo album. I never cared about their popularity in the first place, just the music. As for Doug...

  • ...what are you trying to prove? I like Doug. He was a great songwriter, but I don't think all of his songs were superior to all other Gin Blossoms songs. I'm not going to change my mind about what songs I like, because you don't agree with me. Just relax. They're just songs. You act like I insulted your mother or something. If you resurrected this discussion just to vent your rage, please do so elsewhere.

  • @jmorris724 Cool story bro.
