3dsmax will do an equally good job as Lightwave, both are as good as each other. It's all in the compositer that makes the biggest difference to the final output. Most.. render AVI's directly from max or lightwave. Split all layers and composite them seperatly using a chosen compositor. The output is so much better.
If you want to improve on it, here some suggestions: Post production is your friend. :)
-) Hard lights and shadows. Your fill lights are very bright
-) less erratic & slower camera.. the sequence where you pan past the planets and the Raiders approach is way too fast
-) consistent lighting - talking about the Viper turning around in front of the planet - your light source creates a flare, but is obviously behind the camera.. :)
Cheers dude. some gr8 tips there. A lot of these shots are quite old, my first few tries in 3ds. Ive been learning lighting only recently and having some fun with it. I just got tired of having a bunch of test renders and trials so i threw them all together. Thanks for the comments and tips. I'm sure they'll be useful

Would anyone happen to have a tutorial to help design a battlestar and or viper for 3ds max? (In other words a walkthrough?)

This is quite excellent. I also used 3DS Max to do mine but had to use a render farm to get it all complete. Have a look its on my channel.

The fact that he was able to keyframe in 3dsmax is worthy 4 stars at least! Lightwave FTW!

Ha! yea Lightwave looks good, especially since BSG was actually made with it. Im thinking of trying Maya tho

You take a 3D rendering class and learn tricks from your instructor, then experiment after you have a solid basis.

Ditch all the "z"s and learn to spell "please" right, and someone might be willing to help you.

For a project completed by a single person, it's quite good.
