Wrong, DU rounds do not explode on contact, they are designed to penetrate. They carry nothing but kinetic energy.

@soapy05 Your almost right, the first sound you hear is the bullet hitting the target/ground and as you said the second sound you hear is the actual gun sound..

The muzzle velocity of the gun is 1,070m/s so you will always hear the impact before the roar if the distance is greater then 340 meters since the speed of sound is 340,29 m/s

A-10 shells dont hit the ground, they are stored after being fired so they don't fall on ground troops

Possibly, but storing them is a major factor in friendly troop safety. 30mm GAU-8 shells are very big, and couple that with the velocity they will be traveling (both downwards and forwards due to the strafing run) with the close proximity which they will be dropping to friendly troops, and you could potentially inflict severe unwanted casualties.
