Six years ago I visited the very spot where this scene was filmed. Alas, it has been redeveloped into a car park and looks nothing like it does in the film.
The song always reminds me of one of the songs Benny Hill did on his show while shaking a couple of maraccas and having scantily dressed girls dancing around him.
I cant remember a movie that was so well directed and gave us a picturesque live location with such a talented cast from the very young to mature and versatile older actors.
I stayed in greece for 2 years. I can never forget the country , those where the best days of life. I am from india but love the way Greece is peaceful. It was sad to see the financial turmoil.
This song is soothing , nice and cool. Its nostalgic and reminds me of my great days in greece.
@esselin27 Occidental civilization comes from Greece. The Romans were barbarians and copied Greek art, sculpture and architecture. About the Jerusalem thing, they only gave the religion. It's not bad reading history now and then
@esselin27 roman republic?? do you know S.P.Q.R.?first in order was senatus and then all the other male civillians, the not privillaged as you can think. In Greece they made their decisions in ''vouli'',the parliament, and every male civillian in the proper age had the obligation to vote by raising his hand. That was what they called ''demos''.The word we use my friend is democracy and to enlighten you it derives from the word demos=people and kratos=power. Also Athens gave philosophy and arts.
Anthony Quayle and David Niven actually fought behind German lines in North-west Europe during WW2. Niven in an armoured recce unit (Phantom) after D-Day and Quayle as an Officer in SOE in Albania.....So they certainly brought authenticity to their roles in this classic movie.
the first song is called Karagouna (woman of Karagounides), its folk song from Thessaly-central Greece second is called yalo, yalo (dock, dock) and its folk song from ionian island, infueted by italian cantades.
That's really great to hear :) Ok now this is a shot in the dark but... I'm actually trying to find out the name of the melody played before the 'Yalo Yalo' song. I recognize it and must find out the name... any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Greeks resisted the German occupation, with courage and fortititude. As the place where democracy was born (The very word "Democracy", is of Greek origin).
@TobiramaSenju David was VERY sick during the filming, in his autobiography he stated point blank he did not want to do the filming on location. He relented and the results are great. if you look closely in the scene where he sets the explosives you can see how pale he really is
I've seen this movie countless times over the last three decades, and I still wonder why the song Darren sings sounds so much like the theme from "My Three Sons."
This scene with all those people singing and dancing, and the little girl bringing flowers is so anti-war although this is a war movie. Those people have lived war and knew that it is a terrible thing.,,,,,,,
its called a movie clown, greeks were never scared of germans thats why they had no hesitation wen it came to defending there lands in ww2 and the germans respected them for there heroism! nuff said.
@david128122 Thank you sir. Let's not forget that most of the mountainous regions of Greece even during the occupation were FREE. The age-old Klephtic tradition and resistance kicked in. Greece had one of the most successful sabatoge and resistance movements in the entire continent. So much so that Germany had to leave nearly 100 thousand troops to occupy it. Not to mention that they lost most of their elite paratroopers on Crete. Greece made the axis pay dearly , with other things as well.
They were, but nothing compared to many other countries who fought alone against impossible odds. Some of these fought so well even Heinrich Himmler admired their leader and will to fight. I won't bother to have a history lesson on youtube of all places.
The greeks did however throw the italians out without much fuss, so Hitler had to bail them out. That happened in Northern Africa too, and later in Italy itself.
@Jackthehammer123 The look is not one of fear. It is one of hostility. Some people don't just need the feel to hit everybody they don't like, you see.
The song is called Yalo Yalo Yialo Yialo Piyename Ki'olo yia sena leyame Yialo na pas Yialo n'arthis Ta loyia mou Na thimithis Yialo na pas Yialo n'arthis Ta loyia mou Na thimithis
RichardMartineau's diatribe is meant more of an anti-English(ie we lost the war, France sold us out, we are bitter) response to the discussion rather than any meaningful addition to the discussion. He would be anti-English at any moment in time, spewing out myths rather than thinking.

Very nice song, Germans dying like flies in the hands of marvelous Anglo-Saxons. Wonder why it took so long to beat them (80 M. Germans, 140 millions Soviets, 120 millions US, 45 Brits + Australian, Indian, South African, Canadian ,etc...)
@richardrmartineau "Anglo-Saxons is the name collectively applied to the descendants of the Germanic people who settled in Britain between the late 4th and early 7th cents"
The Anglo-saxons are of Germanic origin.mackyv is right.

Peck, Quinn, Niven and Quayle are all long dead and most people today would never had heard of any of them. They were all FAR too old for this dated, overlong, boring, crapfest. Peck was a draft dodging coward, I wish he had died of lung cancer.
Your fucking hard on the internet. I guess youre a repressed little prick with a lot of pent up anger coz everyone picked on you at school. I should look at getting some therapy instead of being abusive on a PC! ;)
@mackyv I don't mean to butt in, but I have to say that for some occasions it is necessary to have war to further peace and to defend ones own rights and freedoms. No, war is not a pretty thing, but if you don't uphold the law in your country more bloodshed and suffering will ensue.
I have no idea to this day what those people are singing about Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. (AMAZING SONG) *****5 Star Thanks Mackyv for posting it :)
i agree with what youre sayin orangebox! i think flamenco songs sound amazing...so passionate & firey! i still do but now ive learnt spanish and i understand the words and it says random stuff like, "then my little grandmother bought a blue dress from the market" lol! not quite as exotic! this song is cool though. great story aabout the old man mackyv! :)
ObamaRules4Ever how can you say this about The Guns Of Navarone its an amazing classic movie with great actors such as David Niven,Gregory Peck. The scenery is beautiful and so is this song
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This fucking CRAP moivie is overlong, dated, boring and everybody in the cast was far too OLD - especially Niven who was BADLY miscast as well as the great Draft Dodging Coward Gregory Peck.
ObamaRules4Ever at 14 your simply have no idea what makes a good film and what doesnt do you?
Next you'll be saying that the "Great Escape" was shite and the cast was too old etc..... or that Clint Eastwood in "Where Eagles Dare" was too young and wooden?
How about you stick to watching "Get Rich or Die tryng" with racialy oppressed 50cent or some other mindless kiddy shite
No, Where Eagles Dare is much better and Burton and Eastwood were the right age. The Great Escape is overlong and boring though.
I wish the draft dodging coward Gregory Peck had died of LUNG CANCER. What a fucking insult to real veterans casting such OLD men like Peck, Niven, Quinn and Qualye. No wonder Stanley Baker hated the whole fucking thing.
lol at 14 years of age you dont really have the right to say legitimate things cos your still a little shit bag that has no taste in old war films....so shut it u slag
This film was filmed in Rhodes, the scene above was filmed in a village called Lindos, I've been to the exact spot. It doesn't resemble anything like the scene above anymore.
It's an overlong, dated and boring movie with dated special effects and a far too old, ancient cast led by the great draft dodging coward Gregory Fencepost Peck at his most wooden.
but a good story based on true heroism of the english parachute regiments and the greek resistance. you have your opinion and your entitled to it. but if you came thinking this was some popcorn transformers film you came to the wrong place mon ami.
Actually the story was entirely ficticious, there never were any guns or a place called Navarone. I would never have guessed Peck was supposed to be English either.
the story may be fictious but the war itself wasnt. thousands of germans parachuted in crete 8 thousand of them were killed thats the same equivalent as market garden considered one of the greatest military failures of the era and as for the greek resistance there reputation was true as day. you can read up about what leaders said during that time.peace.
I love this song too...I remember sneaking out of an afternoon class and went to to this movie with my friend...when I was in grade 6....then went to see it again at night with my family
i love this song man!!hearrd it in the movie.. sometimes i would play this part again and again juz to sing along wif it..great cinematography to go along wif wonderous music..
Hello!! If you want download the song you must to search: Gialo Gialo. These form you will download because the translate "yialo" isn´t exact. You search "GIALO GIALO"
My inglish is bad but I want to find you the song!!
The Greeks were brave fighters, and did damage to the axis war effort, far beyond their numbers. additionally, they HATED the Italian occupation (unlike portrayed in that bullshit movie by Nicolas Cage, the mandolin crap or something) Many volunteered to fight behind lines, and continued after the war fighting the communist armies trying to take over Greece. Brave Men and Women all!!!

@mackyv War is natraul. Deny war, deny nature.
SniperViper1000 1 year ago

Anyone with a user name like
"ObamaRules4Ever" has bigger problems than reviewing an old movie. Check out the film Jonestown.. I am sure "ObamaRules4Ever" can relate.

ObamaRules4Ever how can you say this about The Guns Of Navarone its an amazing classic movie with great actors such as David Niven,Gregory Peck. The scenery is beautiful and so is this song

It was a huge insult to real veterans by casting such old men in this CUNT movie.
ObamaRules4Ever 2 years ago
ObamaRules4Ever why do you say that?
Is it because your small child brain cant comprehend the content of a film that has no CGI? or no Bullshit 50cent rap shite?
14yrs old, you've just shown how much of a child you really are.
Regarding this film, Ive been to Rhodes, and to Lindos where this was filmed. 10/10 my fav WW2 film :)

This fucking CRAP moivie is overlong, dated, boring and everybody in the cast was far too OLD - especially Niven who was BADLY miscast as well as the great Draft Dodging Coward Gregory Peck.
Fucking CRAP movie, 0/10.
ObamaRules4Ever 2 years ago
ObamaRules4Ever at 14 your simply have no idea what makes a good film and what doesnt do you?
Next you'll be saying that the "Great Escape" was shite and the cast was too old etc..... or that Clint Eastwood in "Where Eagles Dare" was too young and wooden?
How about you stick to watching "Get Rich or Die tryng" with racialy oppressed 50cent or some other mindless kiddy shite
hahah you soft bastard
chapmasi 2 years ago
No, Where Eagles Dare is much better and Burton and Eastwood were the right age. The Great Escape is overlong and boring though.
I wish the draft dodging coward Gregory Peck had died of LUNG CANCER. What a fucking insult to real veterans casting such OLD men like Peck, Niven, Quinn and Qualye. No wonder Stanley Baker hated the whole fucking thing.

lol at 14 years of age you dont really have the right to say legitimate things cos your still a little shit bag that has no taste in old war films....so shut it u slag

This film is a FUCKING INSULT to real veterans casting such OLD MEN.
I'm glad the talentless draft dodging block of wood Gregory Fencepost Peck is DEAD, I wish the talentless CUNT had died of LUNG CANCER.

Seems ObamaRules4Ever has a serious sore spot with this movie. With a name like his, though, how can he claim to be sympathetic to real vets?

This film was filmed in Rhodes, the scene above was filmed in a village called Lindos, I've been to the exact spot. It doesn't resemble anything like the scene above anymore.

Overlong, dated movie with a far too old cast.

im sure theres remake in the lines somewhere but i dont see the point in such a silly comment. this is original cinema around before you were born.
facefilms87 2 years ago
It's an overlong, dated and boring movie with dated special effects and a far too old, ancient cast led by the great draft dodging coward Gregory Fencepost Peck at his most wooden.
ObamaRules4Ever 2 years ago
but a good story based on true heroism of the english parachute regiments and the greek resistance. you have your opinion and your entitled to it. but if you came thinking this was some popcorn transformers film you came to the wrong place mon ami.
facefilms87 2 years ago
Actually the story was entirely ficticious, there never were any guns or a place called Navarone. I would never have guessed Peck was supposed to be English either.
ObamaRules4Ever 2 years ago
the story may be fictious but the war itself wasnt. thousands of germans parachuted in crete 8 thousand of them were killed thats the same equivalent as market garden considered one of the greatest military failures of the era and as for the greek resistance there reputation was true as day. you can read up about what leaders said during that time.peace.
facefilms87 2 years ago 2
Well said. I couldn't agree more with you and there was no need for 'ObamaRules4Ever' original silly and negative comment.

This was actually based upon truth, though the name is completely fiction, it more or less happened on an island called Leros.
