  • so, the only difference between marathon and doom engines is that marathon can look up and down?

  • i miss the old aleph one already. the new version took out the PiD part.

  • God this game sucked, Marathon 2 was much better. The level design in M1 was garbage.

  • @10samm10 Have you even played through the whole game? If not you should. And also - as the AlephOne maps are not actually the original Bungie-made maps - I suggest you play the original release, although it will probably make little to no difference. I respect your opinion and all, but I strongly, strongly, strongly disagree with that statement! To quote Façade 'Maybe you just need to let it soak in a little'. :-)

  • @CaptainAppleManFilms I have played through the whole game. And not the Aleph One maps. The story was quite nice but the maps were confusing and too maze-like. Compared to even Doom, it had some pretty terrible map design with very poor texture choices. Even the p'hor levels with their alien atmosphere didn't help. The auto map was godsend and the game would have been impossible without it. Marathon 2 was far more detailed and thoughtfully designed.

  • I can't hear anything. Why is that?

  • An era begins...

  • I just assumed Halo borrowed straight from Marathon so much because they were in a rush to create a single-player narrative after the buyout.

  • no reason to get pissed thinking marathon and halo are related you can see similarities and after halo 3s ending everyone said hey look at this other bungie game with a guy in green armor on a ship

  • For all of you purists out there (myself included), there's now a way to bypass the PID intro. Google search "simplici7y no pid".

  • it is kinda odd that there would be an underground rock/dirt tunnel IN A SPACE SHIP!

  • I've played this level since I was three I can never forget that eerie music.

  • Do i have to do this entire game on one health bar?? No health support??

  • never mind i was being foolish i solved that problem

  • Why is the very beginning like Pathways Into Darkness? The version I played back in the day had nothing like that.

  • Basically Marathon did tie into PiD... so the folks who created the Aleph1 app so it could run on the newer OS, Windows and Linux took a little freedom and added that beginning bit, mostly as a salute to Pathways.

  • @Lightcycle yeah cus i remember playing hte original mac version on my 1992 apple macintosh computer xD lol good times. And it didnt have taht awesome dumgeon looking part.

  • This is the AlephOne fan remake of marathon, they added that short section as a tribute. I run through it and pretend it was never there.

  • its awful isn't it? now everyone who plays aleph one, which is basically everyone from now on, thinks that the game starts in pathways rather than on a spaceship.

I don't think they really thought that through when they added it, I'm normally not a purist but its goofy and obviously ruins the beginning of the story if you don't already know it.

  • Well the alephone version of marathon was a fan remake, so they can put what they want in it. When people get alephone though they're more likely to play durandal or infinity

  • @coprographia Because the game started out as a sequel to that game, but they decided to just turn into a new series.

  • @coprographia It was a hat tip to PID that the makers of Marathon 1 Reloaded (or what its proper title was) made when they converted the maps to Aleph One.

  • I loved this game, but sometimes it was like playing inside a Rubix cube....

  • Dang! This guy can run faster than Gordon Freeman!lol

  • not if you consider Bunny hopping (see Half-Life in Half an Hour)

  • bungie confirmed marathon has

    no relation with halo

    diffrent world and universe

  • yup

  • Both contain The DURANDAL Logo and

    people lie

  • Look, did you just hear what he said?! You can find the quote somewhere master chief is the same character in both, but jason jones said that it's just 2 different incarnations of the same character.

  • yeah, exept it has better graphics, more of a tense atmosphere, you actually have to aim and has a story.

  • If you had played Marathon, you'd know there's a story, a damn better one than halo has.

  • @DoomDodgers Halo is sort of like a reboot of Marathon. Same kinda story. Same kinda weapons... and many references in-game.

  • what a noob man

  • run forrest, ruuunn...

  • Running is my friend ;P

  • actually as i read on halo pedia master chief and the cyborg guy from marathon (dont know the series good) are NOT THE SAME PEOPLE but decendents of some person making them sort of related

  • hehehe....

    Conspiracies abound.

  • yes i thinck the halo games were prequels to marathon

  • i agree with that!

and at the E3 they wil announce Marathon (as Halo 4)... at least... i hope so.

  • THey Are not FUCKING RELATED!

  • @MacLoverNoHomo Are you talking about Halo and Marathon? If you are, there are some similarities that are hard to ignore. The Marathon symbol is constantly referenced throughout the Halo series, and if you look at captain keyes uniform right in the beginning of the game(Combat Evolved) where he hands you the pistol, you can see it plainly on his uniform. The universes don't perfectly match up, but there are many similarities between the two. You can look it up, theres tons of tie ins.

  • no, actually it came out a long time ago but people have been making connections.

  • marathon dumbass, dont you read the titles?

  • i heard that bungie was going to put master chief in as the new protagonist in the remake of marathon.

  • i think this is masterchief, coz i really know the armor at his hand

  • hey guess what! theres a rumor goin around that bungie is makin a remake of marathon since halo is over. and on top of that at the final ending of halo3 there are hints that master cheif and the main character of marathon are one in the same! im thinkin that the marathon remake is gonna be a tie-in with halo where master cheif and the space marines fight the new race of aliens(the pfhor).

  • actually master chief is the bad guy in marathon because his ship lands on the planet at the end of halo 3 credits

  • ROFL. He just flys towards it, it doesn't show he lands on it

  • Also, there is probably no way that the Master chief and the ruined hunk of ship he was on could suddenly morph into a fully stocked, 2 Kilometer long Alien scout ship.

  • yea i know Marathon just inspired Halo thats why there are so many similarities other places in the game ppl are annoying saying there realted its starting to piss me off

  • Hey, Can anyone help me with Marathon>? In the first level of the 1st Marathon, what is that floating red Genie there>? and how I get Marathon Rubicon working>? and The Brightness In-game is on lightest but it is still too dark to see anything. any Experts able to help me>? -Thanks

  • are you on PC or Mac?

  • Spammers will be removed and blocked.

  • Why is the game soo dark>? I cant see and its impossible to see and paths or items. I think the Old FPS games like Doom, Wolfenstien, and this are way scaryier than any new Survival horro games. Because U can't see whats comming towrds you, and you all alone, and You cannot jumpa nd run away ffrom the monsters as good!

  • use your fists more, running into enemies and letting rip does more damage!

  • Hey hey a total carnage player :)

Ya it's easier to do that in rooms with space to manouvre

  • this was such a great game. it used to scare the crap out of me

  • YA me too the best for scariness probably was the first one.... Infinity had some creepy parts but nothing like the first game.

Marathon Evil has some good creepyness going on.

ALthough if you just like good and scary.. Alien vs Predator 1 human campaign does a real good job at it.

  • No Wai! It's possible to go thru that door in the beginning. you're quite the explorer!

  • can i play this on windows Xp?

or is it only playable on 95 and macs?

  • Yes you can!

    Try going to sourceDOTbungieDOTorg

    replace the DOTs with periods

You can also go to bungie net and go to the underground forum in their forums section and get help there.

  • Yeah, but not only do some people NOT have Macs, some people also prefer console gaming to PC gaming. I'm both of these people. I'm sure they can sweeten the deal and making it worth buying by throwing in exclusive features.

  • Actually I think what I wonder why Microsoft won't devote any of their Xbox division to porting it to the Xbox Arcade. However that said, Microsoft has given or sponsored classes on programming for the Xbox, so I wouldn't be surprised if some third party does make an Xbox version of it in the near future.

  • The free 'Aleph One' version of the Marathon trilogy has PC, Linux, and Mac versions. So you don't need to buy a new computer just to play Marathon.

  • Yup! :)

  • I wonder why Bungie wont release a Marathon collection for the Xbox. Halo fans who missed Marathon, like me, would want it.

  • Well mainly because they are focusing totally on Halo currently + whatever is the next project. and two the whole series is for free download... that's how kickbutt awesome bungie is. (you still have to pay to get a legal copy doom for cryin out loud).

  • i really loved this game.
