Great video, I have the same monitor and turns on and the picture shows for a brief second and then it goes blank but I can almost make out a ghostlike image, like a bad LCD inverter on a laptop. Any suggestions which componet to check on the power/inverter board? I'm new to components.
i have excact same problem at home, i want to try n fix it my self. what capacitors should i use?? .. how can i know which are the correct to use, and is it very wrong if i use different volts / anything else.. ??
@usernaameunavailable You can go up a step in the voltage rating, but try to keep everything else the same. Use low impedance 105 degree caps. Also get the proper diameter and height.
Thanks helped me fix my monitor. I would have thrown it away. To think how much is wasted when most things could be fixed easily. I not sure but I fear when the US bring in the ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement)bill this kind of knowledge will be illegal. THIS KNOWLEDGE IS ANTI CONSUMER, ANTI CAPITALIST and totally illuminating. Thank you again.
thanks, I have a monitor of this same model (made one month after yours was) it messed the bed and wont power on, i will check my caps as well. going to try a sharp knife to get the plastic border around the frame off ...
@TechnoW1zard A sharp knife would probably be bad news LOL. I think I just used a small flat blade screwdriver to get the corners, and then just pulled on the rest of it a bit at a time.
I replaced 3 caps like in this video but now when I turn it on I get a screen for about 2 seconds and then back off. The blue power light stays on the whole time. I can press the source button on the bottom and get it to come back on and it says digital on the top corner but then goes off again after 2 seconds. Any ideas?
@jwhitt78 Cool, glad it helped! I hope to do more videos like this in the near future. Just been really busy with my job these days, and haven't had much time to do stuff at home.
@mittimcom Cool, hope you can get it going again! Be sure to use Low impedance caps of the proper rating and physical size. I usually get them from Mouser Electronics.
K So i found 2 bad caps with rounded tops. So i went to radio shack to buy new ones all they had is 1000uF at 35v and the bad one run at 1000uF at 16v so if i put a higher voltage in what would it do?
@STORMINNORMAN800 It would work fine as long as it fits in the space you need to put it. But the problem is, most caps at RS aren't rated for low impedance power supply circuits.
How did you manage to take the "front bezel"??? I am trying to open mine up and remve the damn bug inside the screen ... just worried that I will break the bezel by pulling too hard. Shame they did it sooo complicated!! Y not using damn screws lol
I think you have to use a flat tool like a razor blade to wedge between the seam and push down on the front part of the bezel to unhinge it from the tab. There is a screw securing the front bezel; i forget where exactly it is, but i think it is under the silver cover at the front bottom.
Thanks Maxx! I have hope to fix mine. Kinda odd and coincidental that I have the same monitor only a bit older (by few months) and the very same capacitors were blown. Anyway this helped me a great deal!
Thanks for this video... i couldnt figure out how to open this monitor i got for free.. problem with it was i'd turn it on it'd turn itself off.. i figured out from this video how to detach the snaps around the monitor frame. Turns out it's bad caps on the power supply board.
And thus i get a nice monitor for free, and using it to opst this comment right now,. Thanks again.
My girlfriend has one of these monotors, but IMO, It doesn't compare visually to my Samtron 77V. Her LG W1952TQ gets that rainbow effect with color and shade separation where you see bands instead of a smooth transition from shade to shade and throughout colors. She has a 1gb GeForce 210 at max quality, via a DVI connection.
This video just saved me over $200 on a replacement monitor! My LG 24" suddenly quit working. I disassembled it exactly as in the video, found 3 blown capacitors, easily identifiable by rounded tops, replaced them with 3 new caps from Radio Shack, and now it's working perfectly. Note that I replaced all the capacitors with equal uF rating caps but higher voltage ratings (all they had in stock at Radio Shack), it seems to work just fine. Now I don't have to buy a new monitor! You rock!!
@ejdriscoll Cool, glad you got it going! I usually recommend replacing all the caps in the power supply, but that should keep you going for a while at least.
@Maxxarcade I wish I could have replaced them all, there were 3 bad ones and my RS only had 4 in stock ! I wasn't even sure it was going to work at all -- now that I know it actually works I would take the time to replace them all if I had to open the case back up again. Thanks again!
i have a similar monitor that is having some problems... none of the caps looked to be blown however i went ahead and replace 6 of them. id didnt fix it now i believe it is the transformer.
My question is where do i get a new one? i haven't found any videos or any websites on replacing one.
@Maxxarcade when i turn it on there is a high pitched hummm it turns on for about 5 seconds and then turns off, the power button still indicating its on
after some research i thought it was a blown capacitor on the power board after switching 6 of them and puting it back together it still did the same thing... the humm appears to be coming from what is the transformer (the part you indicated in the video that looked like it had heat damage)
@AMWille Hmm, I'll have to look into that. It could be the transformer, or the circuit that drives it. Could also be a bad backlight tube. Does the screen light up normally for a few seconds before it goes out? If it does, look at the screen closely under a bright light and see if the picture is still there.
nice tutorial.. wondering if u can teach me how to disassemble that monitor? better if u can email me some pics on how to disassemble it... i have the lg w1642s very much similar to the one that u have in the video..just a bit smaller.. i want to open it to make a wall mount at the back.. because its a non wall mount lcd.. email is hookupchick@yahoo.com thanks in advance :)
I was actually given a free, broken LG 194WT LCD about 2 years ago that had bad caps (wouldn't turn on). Spent a few minutes replacing them and all was working again. :) It's in great shape like yours; no scratches, no dead pixels, etc.
My LG Flatron W2243T was made in May 2009 and still working fine after a year. I hope LG is using better caps now. Mine doesn't make any annoying beeps too.
@wildbilltexas The beeps can be turned off, but they never bothered me. On my 30" monitor, the beeper is necessary, since there's no on screen display.
Great job Aaron, bit of a shame about the bezel but some of those things can be a right pain in the butt can't they. Still worked out real well for $30 ish.
In addition to the bad capacitors, I have also seen bad backlight cold cathode tubes. They overheat in some way, get shorted out and burn the power supply at the same time...
@msylvain59 Yep, they start to get dim, then turn pink. After that, they start to flicker, which forces the inverter to repeatedly supply the higher current needed for ignition. Sometimes the wires get brittle and short to the frame of the screen too.
Great video, thanks for posting! I enjoy watching repair videos.

@Knaeckebrotsaege I left the control board caps alone because I was feeling lazy (and sick with a cold). If it ever starts to glitch, I'll know where the problem is :-)
That's a pretty nice monitor for $35. I have a 6-year-old Dell widescreen with a bunch of inputs and a pivoting screen that I bought new and I wanted to hang onto for as long as possible. So, when it died last year, I also replaced the caps to bring it back to life.
about 3 or 4 months ago i found a cheap generic 20" widescreen lcd monitor for free on the side of the road with the exact same problem, bad capacitors in the power supply and luckily i just so happened to have all the capacitors i needed lying around on scraped circuit boards that came out of old junk i also got for free out of the trash so that was really lucky for me, a nice 20" widescreen monitor with a native resolution of 1440 x 900 for total investment of 0 dollars
@sonic3243 One of my favorites to use is still an old 17" HP 1702. Old technology, but good quality. Good brightness and response time, despite lower contrast ratio. I wouldn't use it for photo editing or other critical stuff, but it's great for browsing the web and playing older games.
Wait just a minute young man, you lied to us! First you said you paid only $30 for this monitor and then later on in the video you said $35, and then BTW, you said your total was $37. So what is it $30 or $37??? What do you think we're stupid or something? You didn't get such a good deal after all did you? You probably paid $100 for this and you're ashamed to admit that to us. Does your wife know what you really paid? Who do you think you are Captain Kirk or something... jeez!
Since I paid $25 for the monitor plus $10 shipping, I'd say that's $35. Add the $2 worth of parts I used, and it's $37. So when I said $30, it was a simple mistake. Maybe I should have said "Under $40"?
@Maxxarcade Well I don't know then. I still think that you think you're Captain Kirk who flies around the universe eating green ice cream from Star Base 12 in Sector 7 and you think that's all you need to do because you have no time on a work night to scrub your finger nails. They're dirty you know.
For the average consumer, repairing electronics isn't cost-effective. It's cheaper to throw the old equipment into the garbage bin and buy a new one. Nice job repairing the bad monitor. Not likely you could do the work, resell it and turn a profit though, right?
@PutSome5tankOnIt On this particular one, I could sell it for $100 or so. Older ones, not so much. The biggest advantage is saving myself some money when I need more equipment.
@PutSome5tankOnIt Thats a shame it is a throw away world, The technology is always changing, no one wants older types, they wan't the latest and greatest, Especially with 3D & HD
@HDXFH It is a shame. I personally don't like to spend money trying to keep up with technology; I'm always a step or two behind. I've bought and fixed two LCD tvs very cheaply, and I'll be working on a 3rd next week; the LCD tvs are only 3-5 years old. The pictures don't look quite as sharp as the newest tvs, but they're still very nice.
@crusherbad64 or if it's an Acer which is completely dead, the bridge rectifier may have gone shorted, blowing the fuse in the process. this odd problem is actually pretty common for Acer LCDs for some reason. but the caps should be replaced anyways ... i mean.. you're in there already.. so why not? :D
Thats good you got the monitor working! Im currently looking for an old monitor with a resolution of 1440x900 so i can take the main boards out and connect them to a hp touchsmart iq772 screen, so i can have a fully working touchscreen, the motherboard in the iq772 drove the display and the motherboard is the dead bit.
my lg lcd is also sudden dead! No light, no power, is it the problem related to the capacitors too?

This is what i hate about modern electronics, they put the cheapest and crappiest components inside

I always worry when I see bad / burnt parts as to "what made them go bad" - is this less of a worry with capacitors?
hammondeggs49 1 year ago
@hammondeggs49 If they are a known defective brand, or are very old, it's usually safe to assume it's just the caps themselves.

so when monitors goes out, its mostly for bad caps?

@crusherbad64 A lot of the time, yes.
Maxxarcade 1 year ago
