IIHS now has more clout than the NHTSA and automakers are starting to build cars to conform to THEIR standards rather than NHTSA's, thankfully. NHTSA really needs to update their testing methods, which are more or less a joke today because virtually all cars pass with flying colours. I think the "Poor" rating here would get a clean pass in the NHTSA side test because the barrier doesn't go as high.

And they've mandated airbags elsewhere; they should mandate side ones by this point.

yeah there are several unrealistic aspects of these crash tests....the angle of impact, the weight, height of impact.

in real life i think big cars do better than their tests and small cars do worse, thats just my opinion after seeing so many cars smashed up everytime it rains.

There are exceptions, but most of the time thats right. The Smart Car is a suicide mobile, but the Mini Cooper (new models, of course) are rated very well. Most other cars at that small of a size will probably entomb you.
