@r5d7drd kennedy was much better and would have been great had he lived. i will say nixon was the best rublican president of the last 50 years and that watergate is probably the biggest overblown scandal in US history. the plots to kill foreign leaders, the iran contras, the iranian hostages, the 2nd iraq war and the lies over WMDs are all significantly bigger and more dangerous. Nixon was haunted by JFKs death and realized those burglars tied back to the CIA. anti castro cubans and dallas
People praising Nixon for his words here are either grotesque or they have been mislead-Nixon is explaining his strategy to preserve segregatation in schools. The "excessive busing" problem he refers to is a way around sending buses into poor neighborhoods, in other words into black neighborhoods. "There must be no legal segregation." But segregation decided by your neighborhood is just as good if all the blacks are poor!
Nixon was a sonofabitch, but Damn! he was a smart man. Today's Republican Party probably wouldn't have him. They want ignorant hicks like Huckabee or Palin, who make them comfortable with their own ignorance.
i couldn't help but have a grin on my face listening to this. Nixon sounds like a professor in the middle of a lecture. Not the boring ones though! I actually understood what he was trying to get through!
2ThePrimeDirective: Perhaps that's because we are hearing the more casual, unrehearsed side of Nixon that he worked hard to conceal. Had Nixon's personal demons not relegated him to demonstrating a personality of starched cardboard, I think he may have survived Watergate.

Obvious that Nixon was quite close with his wife and daughters. Movies about him have not quite captured his overall personality/demeanor accurately.
