This man is in no way the Grandfather of Black Martial Artist first of all Moses was not a recognised artist in the real sense of the word Big George Harris a Black Judoka and legitimate Kodan Black Belt was a grand champion in American Judo scene in the early 60's and might I add Moses was around at this time and no record exist of him in any of the numerous Grappling related venues Sambo,Judo,Juijitsu (actual) Addiotionally those breakfalls are white belt level and primarily fake.
I trained in the mid 70's at headquarters 554 atlantic ave ,& a lil bit at livingston st, as well as privately ,he was like a father to me, he took me to the bahamas where they had moses powell day , a true gentleman & a great teacher a very humble man & a very dangerous man. I loved him ,he used to say "to be aware ,is to be alive ,Ous
I met Dr. Powell in 1990. I was honored to be at his birthday dinner the week before he passed. I miss him everyday. I cherish the rank I earned from him and try to uphold his teachings. Each on teach one. Ous------ Rick
THANK - YOU MASTER MOSES POWELL FOR HE NOT ONLY TAUGHT US HOW TO PROTECT OURSELF BUT TO ALSO BE GENTELMEN OMAR SHABAZZ AND IF YOU THINK IT DONT WORK PLEASE GIVE OMAR SHABAZZ A CALL AT 1-917-701-2287 , SOME SAY SEEING IS BELIEVING. WE SAY FEELING IS A FACT
Grandmaster Powell has left us all a great legacy. Moving graceful as the wind. Flowing smooth like water. Prof. Powell focus was like an Eagle. He was limber and slippery as a Snake. He moved with Blinding Lightning Speed. Grandmaster Powell strength was like a Tiger going on a hunt to destroy its prey. Wow, what we can and still do learn from watching his videos. When I need encouragement in my training I watch the Master at work. God Bless all of his family and students. Bro. Ellis
Smooth as he was i remember his question in Warriors Within what i want to know is can the ones that demonstrate fantastic thing can they FIGHT.And be mindful of the talent displayed by uke Soke Little John.....
I was watching a Professor of the Arts from Philly and what he was doing look awesome, he was a muslim. He said he learned from Dr. Powell, who I never heard of, but can see he was a special man.
professor powell is definitely a noitable mention, but this is during a time when blacks were fighting for their rights and survival. Its true that blacks like professor powell deserve recognition, but you also have to look to chinese and japanese instructors who took in black students and taught them, when white instructors wouldn't let black students in their dojos. It amazes me that there are african martial artist all over america and most and the people you hear about are chuck norris etc
OMG! I only heard of stories of his fluidity and speed, and his famous one finger roll. This is awesome...met Dr Powell later in his life during a seminar, and learned some great pressure point strikes i will never forget, Thank you Dr Powell ooosss RIP
