  • you better quick from smoke man you almost can't breath but as always cool tutorial dom you got the touch!

  • The white balance is over 9000!!!!!!

  • Dom, ISO newbie question:

With the great noise reduction in today's camera's couldn't you have simply boosted the ISO so you don't have to use the full power of the flash guns and reduce the shutter speed to get within your camera's synch speed limits or 1) will that cause the background to wash out in a situation like this and 2) will the dramatic effect that you have in the last set of photos be ruined 3) for snowy background does boosting the ISO cause other problems not discussed here?

  • @meltdownman1 increasing the iso would increase the total exposure not just the flash exposure so that would mean the background would get brighter and thus not as saturated, exactly as you have stated. in snowy situations like this there is little reason for high iso as it is usually pretty bright

  • Hi, at the last picture, what the shoot speed, 1/3500 @ F16 ? How to calc the exposure with many flash's, cold used with flash meter to accomplish that ? if you have non nikon flash ?

  • I got seasick while looking at this but i learned something so i quess it was worth it ;-) Thank you!

  • awesome photos but its still cool aut there (:

  • It is a bid sad to have gone on a ski vacation by your self but there must have been someone there who would have taken a photo of your self having a good time, if you'd asked around.

    .

    Where is the jumping photo?

    Didn't that come out?

    .

    .

    Cheers.

    from,

    del-boy.

  • @Dddddorian a ski vacation? this was the hill behind where i live.

  • @Dombowerphoto Well lucky you; I'm on my way over.

    .

    Cheers.

    from,

    del-boy

  • @Dddddorian LOL he told you

  • Tkx for sharing :)

  • OVER 9000!!!

  • Are you actually controlling the power of the off camera flashes with the flash mounted on your camera's hot shoe? If so how do the flashes communicate with each other?

Also, I've seen somebody do that sort of thing b4 changing the colour balance in camera but I don't know if it's possible with my 500d - wouldn't it be easier to change the white balance afterwards if you shot in RAW, would you get the same effect? Thanks....eD

  • Are you actually controlling the power of the off camera flashes with the flash on your camera? If so how does it communicate with the other flashes?

  • @edgrrr101 yes i am, check out my other videos about nikon cls, the pop up flash communicattes buy a series of pre flashes which are super fast that you dont see them

  • First photo was fucking rad.

  • Hope you answer my question:

Is your Camera set to TTL in Commander Mode? Or are you using Manual in Commander mode? OR you are using TTL in Commander Mode but are Manually overriding the flash power in the SB-900?

  • you are a great photographer teacher. awesome job!

  • I felt dizzy looking at this video...

  • @Cyberskyzero dont take drugs

  • Super video,,

  • I have a Canon 550d, as far as I know I can't set the temperature of the light coming into the camera in kelvin on my camera (without magic lantern installed). Is there any way of doing it apart from the presets like cloudy, incandescent etc?

    Thanks, John

  • Hope to see more

  • exercise taken care of as well with all the running :)

  • do u know of any good books on using the Kelvin scale in photography? thanks

  • @ChefWannabeToo books? how much do you need to know? it goes from a low number to a high number, from orange to blue. there you go now you know all you need to know

  • @ChefWannabeToo Everything you need to know about Kelvin in the photography context you will find in the Wikipedia article about the "Black Body".

  • u looks like pit bull, anyway ur solo photography is awsome

  • Super ;-).

  • perfect!

  • Duuude! That's exhausting! :D

  • Nice Vid Dom great info thanks ill be trying this with a model this week.

  • 5 stars. Perfect video. Fun but informative.

  • great Stuff, love the 2nd last Shot the best,

  • great Stuff, love the 2nd last Shoot,

  • you're right... it never happened to me so far...

thanks for answering and for the video... very cool.

    best

  • hi Dom,

so the advantages of using sb900 over a radio triggered system is that you can control TTL all flashes FROM the sb900? in this case would a TTL radio trigger be a better choice considering you are not limited by the direction of light beam and distance to comunicate with the slaves plus you'll have another light available for the scene ? Just wondering where the money can be spent wisely...

  • @renatosamba again, never been in a situation where my flash has not managed to reach what i am shooting, also the flashes will be in one direction, not usual for me to have flashes in different directions from the camera, but if shooting indoors then the light bounces really well and still i dont need it.

  • Thank you so much on info

simply idea but the result amazing

    keep going

  • this was brilliant, went out and gave it a go, even tried it with an orange grad on the camera with the sun setting which made the sky go an amazing deep orange

commenting with links doesn't seam to work here but is on my flickr under BigDaveUK

next time i won't use the tree in the background, it looks nice when zoomed out but not when cropped in

just gutted that yet again derbyshire missed all the ruddy snow

  • Great to see your new channel and this new video is one of the best!

  • Great work Dom ! Thanks for the vid

  • sorry for bad english but how tha fuck do you do so fucking good pictures??

you are the king of photo dom ;)

  • @MathaFuckaz i like your comment!

  • Excelente

  • Great video Dom ! Can you tell me why you use the SB900 to trigger the other flashes rather than the cameras onboard flash and the built in CLS controller stuff. Is it just because you need the extra flash power when using it in daylight?

    Cheers!

  • @Shuttleworth68 correct and the flashes are further away from the camera than normal with no walls to bounce the flash off.

  • Hello Everyone thanks for tweeting and facebook sharing this video, much appreciated

  • Amazing Video Dom :)

  • You make the best videos Dom! Please continue to make more that are about strobe work,

  • I really like you running around to make a video

  • Great video dom!........Congrats.

  • sorry when I ask, but what flashes do you have I know you have a sb-900 and a sb-800 but what's the third?

  • @Spaeckli another sb900

  • wow those last couple of shots of beautiful

  • Another great idea for a creative shoot in the snow.. Great vid DOm.. Recommended you to someone at The Guardian to watch the other day..

For those that don't know the K stands for kelvin, as a measure of temperature..

  • Very nice video Dom,really enjoyed it,shame the "Snow" decided to miss us mostly down in Bristol...some great looking images there shows what you can do with some imagination....

  • Really really good shots! Like it a lot.

  • LOL at my TYPO WTF!! XD

  • awesome

  • @LGHNGMN thanks

  • and i genuinely hope ur not paying or buying all this equipment! Holy shit you must know someone in a store who can let u test drive this many equipment. I estimate u used over 2k here excluding ur cam+lens.

    Overall, great job.

  • @amansoori 3 flashes plus stands = 1k, 1 camera for shooting and one camera for filming =1.5k, lens 500, camera bag 100. so more around the 3k amount of gear. I dont know anyone in a store unfortunatly would be good to know one though.

  • you're officially the best out there.

  • @amansoori much appreciated

  • Wow! Wow! and Wow! Loved it.

  • @MrBeautancus glad you enjoyed it.

  • Great video as usual. How did you get your video to pan out starting at 5:01 when you were speeding up the video?

  • Sorry, it actually started at 5:07

  • @m505xl imovie

  • Thanks! Great video Dom

  • @FlyerThanAverage10 thank you

  • Nice video man! I noticed you had the "wide angle flip down thing" flipped down on top of your gels. Does this not take a lot of the flashes power away? On my Canon 430EX I know it does. Is this different on your flashes? How do you attach your gels? Thanks. Nate42nd

  • @nate42nd correct but on my sb800 i dont have a gell holder and that works just fine

  • @Dombowerphoto Good to know Dom. Thanks.

  • gotta lobe this video!!.. thanks for all the Info Dom..

    *thumps up!*

  • @edgarbarradaskate thanks

  • @edgarbarradaskate i lobe it to!

  • awsome video..

  • @ginostamaria thank you

  • My fave video of yours for quite some time!

    Really helpful!

Is there a dummy way to remember what affects what..?

ie, from what I gather it is WB = background change, and then you need a gel of your WB temp to make you look normal?

  • @Coedy There is not really a dummies way of remembering, I have to constantly remind myself how white balance works. just got to keep on practicing

  • Awesome video! :D

  • Nice video ;)

And does the snow "destroy" the light stands?

    And which one do you use because I think that that will be the the next gift for christmas for me (;

Last question.. which is your favourit lens and the sharpest do you use? thanks (:

  • @echlol dont know, they might get rusty in the future but they are simple pieces of metal tubes. check my blog for my videos on light stands.

again last quesition head to the blog for that

  • Wow great shots really like the all blue one really great pic

  • @MediaUnlocked thanks

  • It is kelvin. A measure of temperature.. where you 3000 - 5000 K it is Kelvin...

  • Great video.... It is amazing there is more snow in your area than in my city of Toronto... I`m waiting to do some winter wonderland photos:)

  • Cool pics!

  • Just in case I havn't said this before. THANK YOU! Awesome vids!!!

  • @Itchhhh no, thank you for watching.

  • lol over 9000! BTW don't you get any filter burn on the flash's head since you actually put them right neext to it? and why go over sync speed? arent you loosing too much power then just going fo f16?

  • @gilegraam when you zoom a flash it actually goes futher back in the flash so less chance of flash gel melting

totally agree, doing a higher fnumber is better than faster than sync speed. wont do that again

  • @Dombowerphoto oh btw have you seen this crazy old man? he pops out some gnarly images with 8 sb900s. just insane. and the range he gets with them, amazing. watch?v=cP6a47BQA70

  • it's over 9000!

  • Those are some really cool looking setups.

  • Great info Dom!

    It's appreciated!

  • @TraceurZeno thanks

  • I'm amazed at how snowy it is there!

  • @GrimsditchImages and it is snowing more just now as well!

  • That was very informative, I learned so many things in such a short period of time.

  • @JoshenReborn brilliant!

  • simply amazing. your pictures look so dramatic.

  • @Coccc22 thanks glad you thought so

  • Just awesome!!!

but you should buy a wireless trigger so you don't have to run all the time xD

  • @Spaeckli ah it keeps me fit!

  • good job, Dom :)

  • 5:25 ish loved that photo. Thanks for the video Dom! Are you going to remake the video with the flash hidden in a hole with the red gel? I can't seem to find it anywhere, but I want to try that out, just don't remember all the stuff u did ;o) thanks bud!

  • @PiercedCub32 that was my fav as well., ill make a new one of that in the future but with no mud on my head
