Nice boom microphone @ 2:49, right above Steve's head. Despite being a technical failure in camera work, the microphone ascends at a nearly perfect speed, resulting in quite an interesting little phenomenon.
@scabbybuttcrack In the film he made just before this he plays a Monk and had a partly shaved head. It's re growing here. Frank had a full head of hair.
everyone who's tried expressing an uncommon idea or sentiment has been ridiculed by the ignorant. since it's such a common occurance to me, I too believed Steve Allen to be cornering the artist as I've seen Letterman do on countless occasions.. knowledge that Steve Allen was free flowing is all I needed, so you needn't fight someone who's backing up what they feel is a beautiful mind being muted yet again.. I too like thinking out loud. my message is 'help one another understand one another"
It's so encouraging to see Zappa all flustered and uncomfortable in front of one of his heroes like any average person would be. Makes me wonder what great things a schmuck like me is capable of.
At first, I was irritated with Steve Allen's shtick in Part 1, because it seems so condescending -- but, obviously, Allen knew his stuff and was genuinely fascinated by experimental music. He only had to appear affronted in order to "sell" the most unusual acts to his 1960s mainstream audience.
I have always enjoyed Zappa. We might not have heard much of what Zappa offered over the next two decades if it wasn't for these Tonight Show exposures. Steve Allen presented many innovators and cultural advances that helped reshape the attitudes in America. Were it not for these roots much of what is believed to be cutting edge today would not have happened. I would hope he would be remembered and respected as the creative force he was.
While Steve Allen fell over into the conservative side of things in later life, he, like Zappa, was a musical innovator as well as a "talker." These guys are having fun, but they're having fun TOGETHER. I never knew this footage existed; what a treat! (Dont' forgets the other three parts as well.) Thanks for posting this.
Steve Allen had a lot of Groucho Marx in his schtick, and that's definitely a compliment. That was a fun show, wish Frank looked like he was having more fun, but I think he actually was. Just a little intimidated.
I can't believe the number of idiot comments about Steve Allen posted here. Frank Zappa was on the show because he admired Steve and Allen gave him a long segment because he liked what Zappa was doing. It's playful and their both laughing! I'll bet every negative comment was posted by someone under 35.That's the state of pop culture today. Ignorance, hate.and extreme intolerance is"cool". Steve Allen was the counter-culture until SNL 20years later.
@smaher39 just igonore it. if you pay attention to the moron comments on here, made from the deepest pit of ignorance you would never be able to watch anything on here. Of course Zappa was having a laugh. I cant believe any of the people making comments about Allen have even heard a Frank Zappa song. He was notorious for his sarcastic sense of humor.

@smaher39 Yeah, I'm with you dude, Steve Allen was a party-line-toting, establishment loving, boring old cocksucker. Steve Allen totally didn't understand what Frank Zappa was doing and they're having a terrible time. I completely agree with you: Steve Allen is/was a total fucking son-of-bitch asshole.
@aylmerannie2 You obviously have NO IDEA what Steve Allen was about...he may have looked like a square...but he was a VERY cool cat. He was clearly having a very good time with Zappa and I think Zappa was too...YOU are the asshole!!
@smaher39 haha i'm 15 and even i can appreciate it to its full extent. Frank Zappa is a legend and a martyr of rock, and anyone who has anything shitty to say about him has no fucking clue what they're talking about. Especially the people that listen to that mediocre shit by fucking justin beiber and niki minage. Zappa took the form and did something different yet extraordinary with it. that takes alot of talent.
@Smielle1 uhm i didn't make that reply to you. it was directed at the guy who mentioned negative comments being posted by people under 35. that is why i mentioned my age. it is a crucial part of the way people appreciate music these days. they pay attention to their generation. i volunteer my age bc im proud that i can open my mind to music other then the mediocre bullshit they play today.
@smaher39 I agree. Every video on this site involving music, films, or anything always has at least 10 comments bashing someone else's tastes in order to make themselves look more important.

I loved him too, but in this clip, the whole clip, he is too selfish, even at 1:43 clearly he is calling him crazy....I wanna throw up because of his shameless selfishness...YECH !!
When Steve Allen says "Crazy!", you have to remember what that means back in 1962. He's essentially saying "cool" or "wow" or "amazing". Steve Allen isn't making fun of Zappa. His show was about having fun, but not humiliating his guests. Steve wouldn't have someone on his show if he didn't like and admire them.
Actually, Steve Allen was a very hip and open-minded guy. His wise-guy persona is part of his stage act, but if you see him in enough clips, you know he truly respects the musicians who appear on his shows.

The world has forgotten Steve Allen and his asinine belittling of interesting guests for the sake of pablum entertainment. At least FZ's legacy has made up for this. Every second I want that cane to come out of stage left, grab that interrupting whore Allen off the stage, and let young Frank make cool noises on his bikes.
I don't think you get Steve Allen. He likes clearly likes Frank Zappa and wouldn't have had him on the show if he didn't appreciate Frank as a musician.
Wow man! Cool to see he was a bit of a tripper even back then! He probably should've smacked that other dude in the head though, he was a bit of a tool!
For all the negative comments
Then go home and check yourself, you think we're talking 'bougt someone else.
But your.....

Steve Allen is a bit dated now but back then he would put things on which no one else would. He was the only one to invite Lenny Bruce on.
