After his 2nd serious crash in 2001, he realized the third time he might end up dead so he wisely decided to quit, realizing he had already done what all the drivers dream of, to become world champion. In hindsight he did absolutely the right thing. McLaren were far from competitive in 2002 and 2004, and in 2003 their reliability and a hungry Kimi Raikkonen made them appear in better shape than they actually were that year.

Such a shame Lotus blocked his move to Williams in 1993.

I am italian, and I am a supporter of the Ferrari team, but I want to express my greating for Mika Hakkinen, a real champion.

His battles with Schumacher are the best things in formula 1 in the last 15 years (sorry for de bad english)

He's not the best, the best will be always Senna, but however after him there is also Mika with Schumacher, and many others.

Hakkinen was so lucky to survive that crash. Imagine what it must have been like to have a hole cut in your throat to stop you suffocating whilst you were still sat in the car... or don't.

He deserved those titles and then some.

Look at the line-up now. Hamilton only wants to win for himself, he's selfish and arrogant. Button is similar to Mika, but not as good as a driver or person :P

@flipsidedogchop Yes, but Ron Dennis was in charge until 2009. Except there lucky drivers championship in 2008, it's obvious there was a dip in their success when Hakkinen left. He pushed the team to the limit during his career, always motivating them. Yes, Ron Dennis was a big part in what they are as well, but Hakkinen really helped them out as well.

Mika Hakkinen is definitely my hero. Mika and McLaren vs. Michael and Ferrari was just one of the most exciting moments any Formula 1 fans can ask for. The intense rivalry was there, but respect for each other was just as evident as well. Made me really happy as a Fromula 1 fan.

as i said elsewhere, can you ever think of a time when mika blamed anyone for things? or when he talked crap about anyone?? i can't think of a time. he was a great, humble champion. to me, he will always be my favorite, and he is quite missed.

I totally agree - very exciting. I was just disappointed that McLaren wasn't able to follow through due to car performance and reliability. I think Mika could've been more competitive and not really left behind by Michael in his last years. Nevertheless, Mika go!!

It was great to see how Mika och Schumi always had so much respect for each other aswell. On the track the were always fighting but off track you could sometimes have thought they were best friends. They even had a water fight at a press conference (a playful one). That was really funny to see but I don't see that happening with any of today's drivers since they barely speak with each other.
