some folks wonder what it takes to render this. In 3d max this is a few hours on a decent (2ghz, 2GB mem) desktop machine. Certainly lots of effort to put it all together (moving models around, firing the lasers etc, setting up explosions)

just to point out a few things: the velocity of the fighters exicting the battlestar from battlestar galactica are a little slow, they come out of it ALOT faster

and a photon torpedo blast would leave a nice hole where the head used to be on the walker, instead of that :D

oh boy, here we go. The only reason why the Executor was destroyed was the fact the all the officers were killed in the bridge explosion, the proximity to the death star, and the fact that Lucas didnt want to put a lengthy bad guy scene of running to the auxilary bridge to restore control.

It was the easy answer, I'll admit. I could have gone into the technical differences between the Star Wars "Proton Torpedo" and the Star Trek "Photon Torpedo", and how the later has a much greater destructive yield than the former, but I hate showing that I am that much of a sci-fi geek.

Style over substance; all things considered, it's not bad whatsoever. The models LOOK accurate - keep in mind the level of textures the original series had (never mind models). Most NEW home computers would need a lot of horsepower, and those studios have complete GPU-farms devoted to rendering.

Just a shame then that Blake's 7, Firefly, and Doctor Who (1963-1989) are far more interesting sci-fi shows, but nobody's perfect...

You want nerdy: real space combat would be much more similar to submarine combat due to the dominance of offense versus defense. Survival would be all about avoiding detection and , once detected, spacecraft could be destroyed before ever firing a shot. Also, the distances between spacecraft would be at least hundreds of thousands of miles, probably millions. But you can't really evade a laser or even a kinetic weapon traveling at 95% of the speed of light.
