Ground to cloud is more rare, and is triggered bu cloud to ground strikes

um...all lightning comes from the ground up. Ill even bore you with a scientific explination if I have to! (im going to anyways) positive charges in the ground, and negative charges in the clouds. Negative charges and positive are attracted to each other. Positive charges connect with the negative, creating lightning. therefore lightning travels upward. contrary to popular belief. most people say it comes from the clouds but it happens so fast that we dont notice that it actually goes upward
