PEOPLE, if you touch this absolutely nothing will happen, except if its been on a while it may burn you. It'll be the same stupid thing as touching a light bulb. Same exact thing. I've used these since 9th grade, the reason it appears this color is because of the valence electrons loosing energy and moving down a certain amount of energy shells. Based on how many shells they go down (shells are specific), their emission spectrum (ROYGBIV) will change specifically. Each elements color is unique.
nice, i think when burning hydrogen it also produces the same color as its plasma because of its spectrum, it has something to do with number of electrons contained in its atom
@EMC2Documentaries Anytime you apply any source of energy (heat, electricity etc...) it will display the same color- this purple. Color is unique to each element. The color is due to the charged electrons loosing energy, and dropping down energy shells. The specific amount they drop determines their emitted color, therefore each element has its own specific emission, no matter how you apply the energy. Its pretty cool, especially seeing each elements unique color emission.
in school my teacher did this with about 8 different chemicals and we used some type of light measuring device to view the different visible colors and their different wave lengths.
Alright, I've been asking around, and I'd really like to create a very time-absorbing discharge tube such as this. If you could do anything to push me in the right direction for making one such as this (can be way poorer quality. It just needs to be tangible.) then please do.
@curtisphibbs The blue and red is the additive color method that your monitor uses to display that purple. The tube itself emits EMR in purple spectrum wavelength.
@ToasterAthiesm@FerrilEwok Sorry, I was wrong. It is plasma. I just did't make the connection. For the record plasma is ionized or partially ionized gas and happens to be the most common state of matter in the universe as clouds of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Again, I am sorry for the mistake.
actually a light sabre is not plasma at all its an electrical arc powered by focusin an energy source through the power crystals in the hilt of the weapon and due to this there is a gyroscopic effect to holding a light sabre so only force sensetive can handle one and the energy within a lightsabe is so immense that if the focusing crystals ar incorrectly placed.... well.....BOOMMM
@ShinraX666 no, its a tumor of the magical rainbow dualhorned narwhal. But then someone cut off its horn and infused it with thor's testicles. And BAM, lightsaber
A few years ago two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to see if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said "Get the kids and get out of the house, we'll call the police we don't have a clown statue". The "clown statue" was actually a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this on 10 videos tonight the clown will be in your bed at 3:00am with a chainsaw in his hand. Sorry don't want this to happen to me.
@Klause5425 plasma is gas heated to the point that the electrons and protons break apart from their atomic structures and bounce around, occasionally reconnecting. considering the super heated part i would say ya, its dangerous dude lol.
@XxSemperFiGuyxX Go touch a lightbulb thats been on for 5 minutes. Identical feeling. In fact the light bulb might hurt a bit more depending on what kind of bulb it is.
If you really did this you could make an online shop and start selling it one by one! Hand made laserlight MADE IN USA it sounds cool! Can you really make more of those?
@datdudesux Lets assume this is correct then guess what... You are still short changed. However, If Hydrogen in a plasma state creates a HMMMMM UV light what then does that mean? You tell me... It is a good show none the less. But there is a method and reason to his madness...
@carltonfrancis1 because light sabers at this point are entirely impossible due to the fact that plasma must be contained and unless some sort of magnetic technology comes out where it somehow holds it in a definate shape, making it into a weapon is not only impossible but not cost effective in the least. n000b.
@studmuffin45678 not true, michio kaku on his show sci fi science, says its entirely possible to make a "lightsaber"
of course not excatly like the movies, but can do the same thing, its amazing what science can do, why is it only the past 100 years we have managed to use it without religious wackos freaking out?
@carltonfrancis1 Because it's theoretically impossible. The light would keep going and going and going... Unless you made a plasma stick, gave it a handle and then covered the stick in foil. Then again, that would suck.
well.... i expected this to happen. a line of plasma will couple to ground if it travels along a ionized path ie. lazer. now the real probleb is a high cunnent power supply, and somebody to piss you off
I have a mercury version of this type of tube. Once, I connected a 15,000 V neon transformer to it and then noticed the cathode and anode were glowing red! Luckily, the tube is fine. I guess it is made of borosilicate.

That's a Geissler Tube and was invented back around the turn of the century. They put many gasses in those from Hydrogen to Xenon and the HV was generated by a simple spark gap fed transformer that could be called a hybrid of a Neon transformer and a Tesla coil, but many years before Neon was used in Vegas. Nowadays, you can use a properly rated Neon transformer for 6 to 12 inch tubes.
Hey as an Inventor I am only going to say this once! put this over your tail pipe of your car and you will create Carbon monoxide into h20 dihydrogen monoxide that equals a free fuel if storage in a gas tank to switch over from gasoline I believe but I could be wrong it might explode so be careful. I love the musical light show.
