and the performer's texture, 1:50 through 2:25, is entrancing, like toads' droning in a bog.

Yes. On paper it does not look like much: starting at 1:28, I - vi - ii - vii (with F#!) - iii - I(V7/IV) - IV - ii - V7 (and then the section on the G-pedal starts)... it makes me want to learn how to play the cello ;-)
