Days we shall not see again with an incredible music scene, pop, folk, blues, jazz AND Second City stars. I could list them all, but memory and space limits this to a single phrase, CHICAGO 1964-'74, OUR talent invasion!
@909chuck went to school in hinsdale/oakbrook. il..a franciscan seminary .. played in a jug band opened for this guy the chess club.in cicero...gosh 1968/70 ?? or so .he
.told me to keep my day job ..ha what a hoot.. i mean the kid changed strings during his tune ..never missed a lick...wow i remain impressed .....great songwriter !! ..what was the station.. wls? barney pipp ?turn em into peanut butter ... as he said lol wonderful memories
Along with the hysterical lyrics, pay attention to Stevie's guitar prowess. The guy could bring the words but also the licks.... his days at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago were well worth the time.
I saw him the year before he died... he was warming up for ... I can't remember who... he had the audience in the palm of his hand before the end of his second song...
Saw Steve at the Chestnut Cabaret in Philly less than a year before he left us.Helluva performance that was memorable for reasons other than his great music.
Great song! :-D Back in March when I visited my parents in Wisconsin we listened to their SG double cd while driving to the casino. Brings back ALOT of great Chicago memories with my grandmother when I was a little kid.
Miss you Steve---glad that youtube came about so that many, many more people can be touched by you---you live in our hearts, and we miss you brother man!
How sweet it was! Saw Steve for the last time in Dallas Texas after he announced he had cancer. didn't miss a note. Thanks to all who posted vids of this great storyteller and flatpicker. Now I'm off to pick out some ole Goodman tunes myself
Wow! I taped this off the radio in '87 (during middle school) and never heard it anywhere else since! I didn't even know it was Steve Goodman--it all makes sooo much sense now :)
Thanks Thomas for sending. I had to find the lyrics first to understand all, that is my lack of English, while I am Dutch. He was a great singer and humorist, a wonderful combination. So sad he died so young.
Tis sad indeed! but I like to keep the positive view. He left us richer for his having been here on earth. We now have some of the silliest songs in the universe. Songs to make us smile at ourselves (or even laugh). He also gave us the last great train song "City of New Orleans"
Steve-All the best because you were the best

This man was a genius. Even though he knew he was dying, he still kept his sense of humor
