  • i'm getting octobans this christmas. CAN''T WAIT.... And I have an HD high quality drum camera. This shall be great folks.

  • Drawing lines in the SAAAANNDD!!!

  • i dont like metal or prog or whatever you would consider dream theater, but mike portnoy i feel is great because his drumming isn't stereotypical for metal. i think he could adapt and play a lot of different types of music if he wanted to.

  • Totally coked out in this video.

  • @ShittyMcPoopyBalls shut the fuck up you kid, you dont know shit. stick to things you know about, like shit poop and balls. he doesent give one sign of coke use.

  • @axllovesslash Overreaction. Calm the fuck down.

  • @ShittyMcPoopyBalls ...coming from shittymcpoopyballs... grow up

  • @axllovesslash What are you talking about. That is one of the greatest usernames known to man.

  • @axllovesslash Stop being immature axllovesslas

  • b8s hehe the only ones i can afford

  • @german80 story of my life

  • this is an old video, over 10 years old. If you notice, he's playing on the purple monster, which he used in the late 90s.

  • hey does anyone know what's the model of his sabian hi hat?

  • @The15rocker 14" AAX Stage hats

  • Please someone can tell me the name of the song at 2:00 .

OMG 0:40 the hi hat its so brilliant sounds great WITH MIKE !! PLEASE TELL THE NAME :)

  • @vincecu1 Lines in the Sand from Falling Into Infiniti and AAX Stage hats 14"

  • @vincecu1 Dream Theater - Lines in the Sand

  • esta re fumadooo!! ajajajajjaja

  • PEOPLE! just mix brands together, if sabian is too dark for you cange some cymbals to paiste, or meinl, or zildjian, (personaly for special efx use sabian.)

and zildjian and sabian are both pretty damn expensive the paragon line is like 900 and zildjians constantinople line are around the same price.

  • I love Zildjian to be honest, but im not gonna lie. I just got an HHX thin 18" crash, and i think im in love. PLUS, They are made in Canada! CXANADADADADNANDANDA FTW

  • @TopTenMusicChannel Nationalism was a cause of ww1 bad idea.

  • Amazing..what he can do with his hands

  • im a zildjian guy to, personally i dont like sabian, i dont how to explain what i dont like about them, i guess they just sound too dark or something, i not saying they suck, just dont fit my style, but yes i agree zildjian is overpriced, my zht set i got were almost 400, btw those thunder rods he had at the begining are awsome for any beginer or intermediate player, they help me build my speed and power so quick, i love them, but they do take getting use too, i still highly recomend them

  • If you are NOT an endorsed drummer, brand whoring is stupid. There's no point in having all say, Sabian cymbals JUST because you want them to match. If you wipe all the logos off you wouldn't know the difference anyways outside of shape. What's in a brand name other than a name? Play what sounds good to your ear, not what a little bit of black ink says.

  • @joshdecent No, I happen to disagree. LINE whoring is stupid. Brand whoring isn't.

I have AAX, AA, and HHX cymbals. If I had all AAX, that would be stupid. Sabian doesn't always go well with Paiste, or Meinl. To have the same brand makes them more sonically harmonious. The hammering and lathing affects it, as does the proportions of bronze to silver, etc. used in the cymbals by a particular company..and Sabian does parts by hand, whereas Zildjian doesn't.

  • @MattM2011 The point I'm trying to make is to use your -ears- and not your eyes when picking cymbals. You are right that Sabians will likely blend other Sabians, they're also more than capable of blending with other brand cymbals if you take the time to match them. Why dig through one brand trying to find a cymbal that might not be there just to match logos when it could be right in front of you with another brand name on it?I use Vault, HH, HHX, AA, K Customs, Paiste Sigs and it blends perfect.

  • Portnoys overrated!,

  • If you're Canadian, go with Sabian cause they're made in Canada and cheaper here. If you're American go with Zildjian cause they're cheaper there. Unless you want something specific.

  • @gokumaniac Disagree. Zildjian is generally more expensive than Sabian.

  • arghhh i have that song, but i forgot the name. anyone?

  • Also note that endorsed players like Mike Portnoy are getting their cymbals either at a discount or for free as a marketing exposure for the brand. So, of course, when they are talking about the cymbals they will speak highly of them, and they are compensated for this with free gear and marketing of their music.

If Sabian stopped giving any of their endorsed players gear and marketing they would leave for another brand that would... Same goes for all other brands. So consider that as well.

  • @russdonruss Yes, but they're not going to LIE about them. What they say IS true. They just make it seem to be THE best at the time.

  • There are many cymbal companies producing professional grade cymbals... If you don't like the sound produced by one company in their different lines of cymblas, surely you can find another that will meet your needs. Personally, I have a preference for the Zildjian K's and Paists Signatures, and I mix them around my kit as I find the sounds are complimentary to one another. My Kit: K Custom Dark Hi Hats, K Custom Ride, Sig Fast Crash, Sig Full Crash, Sig Paper Thin Crash--Records Awesome.

  • Personlly I would go Sabian or Zildjian, I mean I like Pasite but the set that I have (101) kind of put me off, the crash is really weak and the hats just don't have any power behind them. I know that The 101 is the cheaper set I just don't think that it would do me, the overall sound it gets.

  • @RhyzBell That's because Paiste 101 are the very lowest end cymbals available on the market. Alphas or even PST 5's will knock the socks off of cymbals that are double the price of them.

  • @silencethescreams Oh I see, thanks bro. I'm Thinking I will still buy Sabian though :) untill them I'm stick with my Cheap ones haha. But thats cool, they are alright

  • zildjian and saibain are nearly the same made by two brothers paiste are ver unreliable they cracked on me the whole time

  • @ sheepbodick: Well, maybe you don't hit 'em right. You're the first one I heard saying that Paistes are unreliable. They're reliable as fuck and they have the best sound ;)

  • i like Sabians best too. I had Zildjians for a while but they were SUPER thick. i went thru a lot of sticks with em >:|

  • I like Sabians, but my favorites are pAisTe cymbals. For some, reason I can't really like Zildjians .____.

  • lol i dont like em either

  • PaiSte's are the best choice out there i hate meinl

  • Does Mike Portnoy have a jazz background? I can hear it in his playing.

  • @theshoe124 Yeah he played in jazz band for four years in high school and studied some of it in berklee

  • 2:25-2:32 is pretty badass

  • what are those crashes in this video??

  • could someone please tell me what ride mike used on scenes from a memory?.. cheers.

  • 22'' hh rock ride

  • is that an actual dream theatre song he's playing? i dont listen to em. I've had this tape ever since i started playing and i always loved this song and wanted to jam to it. if it is, can someone send me the title if it's a real song?

  • im trying to decide between zildjian or sabian. can anybody help?

  • Bolth are very good but my personal choice would be sabian, i like the sound alot better.

  • im interersted in the HHX and the AAX lines from sabian. Im also interested in the A customs and K custom hybrids from zildjian. naturally i would use both sabian and zildjian but i cant afford that.

  • I have two drum kits one has all zildjian and the other all sabian bolth are very good but the sabians were a cheaper buy but still good quality.

  • would you recommend the AAX and HHX cymbals to a metal drummer?

  • definitely

  • oh cuz i was going to get zildjian bercuz of their Z customs, A customs, and K customs

  • Its all based on preference i personly like sabian more but you should just tst them out.

  • yea i will probly go to a store this week and see what splash cymbal i want for chrismas

  • my self i would choose sabian. you also shouldnt count out meinl there a legit company as well

  • @critacclaimband arent meinls expensive? or is that the other company

  • not really that exspensive well not where ive seen them

  • Comment removed

  • if i where to get meinls what line of cymbals can play metal?

  • ive tried some generation x ones at my friends house, in my opinion there close to hhx by sabian, and portnoy uses hhx now... if you didnt know and the gen x are a tad cheaper i think but its your kit and its all a preference thing especially with drums and cymbals so do what mike said in the vid and just go to a local music store and try out some to find a good sound

  • =D i think ive finally been able to decide what cymbals im getting.

    16" AA Thin Crash

    21" AAX Stage Ride

    18" HHX Chinese

    10" HHX Splash

    What do you think?

  • nice man. thats awesom choice. basically the best china cymbal ive heard and same with the splash, myself i'd go Hand Hammered duo ride or and HHX stage ride

  • @critacclaimband i will look atr those as well. im trying to get 1 crash, 1 ride, 1 splash, and 1 china

  • good range of sounds- but not too diverse. they all compliment eachother well- nice choice

  • @MulletMan3108 alrite cool

  • paiste are in general the more expensive ones. but imo- they are the better ones. paiste signature are awesome

  • @MulletMan3108 would sabian still be a good brand to get some cymbals from?

  • o yea deffo. paiste, zildjian, sabian and now meinl are the top ones. sabians have a really good range as well. i think paiste's are slightly over priced tho

  • @MulletMan3108 Deff. I think that Sabian is the most inventive and almost always new cymbals. They have sounds for everything and just fit into any1's music.

  • 2:00 choooooooooooon. great cymbals

  • what sabian cymbals do you guys think it would be perfect to play death metal? anybody please!

  • i would recomend tha aax line or aa. they have metal oriented cymbals with metal in the name like the metal ride(amazing) but you can use all there upper lines for metal and sound good in death Ex. george kollias of nile

  • i would recomend sabian aa metal x or sabian HH they have very good tone ando powerful,,sabian HH has the power bell ride:D and great other cymbals

  • The AAX line is really well suited for metal. Especially the AAXplosion crashes.

  • the purple monster is my favorite kit!!!!

  • My favorite of all of the drum kits he has played!

  • i prefer the albino monster, its so awesome xD

  • me too!!!

  • It's "Lines In The Sand" from the Falling Into Infinity album.

  • What's the song around 2:00?

  • I prefer Paiste!!!!!!!!!!

  • i am a zildjian guy i just love the sound. but everyone has their own choice in cymbals. sizes, styles, lathing. you just have to find the sounds you like. there is no better cymbal company. all are made of the same thing and can be played in numerous musical settings. it is all about preference. so stop with the Paiste is better, Meinl is better. there is no one cymbal company that sounds better then another. if it sounds good to you use it, and if it doesnt dont use it find something else.

  • @taylorgretsch

I'm a big SABIAN fan but whta you just said completely makes sense...

  • @taylorgretsch i totally agree. price or prestige doesnt matter, YOUR SOUND MATTERS! i could care less about what name is on it! hell, some of my cymbals are off brands but who cares? if they sound good to u, play em!

  • what you guys thing about the AA Metal-X ones...

  • what is the song he is playing at the end?

  • How i love that time when Mike tried and was one of the most creative drummers in the progressive genre

  • i prefer zildjian over sabian. not by much tho. the only reason why i have grown faund of zildjian was cuz of the z custom line......WHICH R NOW FUCKING GONE!! haha, now they have z3. which in my opinion, arent half bad. but if it wasnt for z custom and some avedis and a custom, id still be buying aax and aa cymbals. i prefer those for sabian. but the bottom line is, acually i have no lcue what the bottom line is hahaha. i just felt like putting that. haha but thats just my opinion....

  • PAISTE!!!!!!!!

  • ZILDJIAN

  • i bought most of my aax in about 95/96... most still very solid sound now... i have replaced some of the smaller cymbals over the years

  • sabian AAX!!!!!

  • @sharkyman66 what type of aax cymbals do you like the most?

  • @sharkyman66

    Sabian HH!!!

  • i think meinl mb20's are the best metal cymbals

  • Oh, I thought all cymbals were metal. Hmmm....

  • yeah paiste is way underrated i really love paistes but for some reason its just not like the same as with a sabian for me at least ive tried lots of different paistes and lots of sabians and i can't even say what is is about the sabians that i like better but just something about them i like a little bit more but im not dumb i wouldnt mind a paiste cymbal sponsorship damn those are really great cymbals

  • i agree with you completely. i think the thing that make sabian better is the warm, more human tone thats hard to find in a cymbal.

  • now that you say that i guess thats it its just not even something that i can like name what i like better about them just like after playing sabians, it feels wrong sitting down to a set and playing anything else but that makes sense now that you say that but i just love sabians soo much more than anythin else

  • same :D

  • Thing with Sabians is that each one is hand made a unique.

  • I suck at drums. Simple beats and terrible fill ins.

  • yh i think paiste are the best man there so quality

  • as much as I like Sabian cymbals I still prefer Paiste more...

  • Paiste are the way. They are the most consitent sounding cymbals. If you break one, you can usualy get the same cymbal with almost the identical sound. Paiste Rules! 2002 series is my fav.

  • yeah dude, they're more expensive, handmade, they not only make cymbals they make, gongs chimes, bells, a whole ton of sounds.

Paiste has really outdone ANY cymbal company out there and yet they are so underrated. I hate it.

im into the twenties and signatures

  • Wow dude. People are idiots. You said you liked Sabian, but prefer Paiste. People are misunderstanding your comment and voting thumbs down.

Everyone he likes Sabian AND Paiste

  • haha, people are retarted x]

  • Extremely xD

  • What song is he playing at the end?

  • Lines In The sand, from the album Falling Into Infinity.

  • I want sabian cymbal so badly :D

  • you have no room to talk

  • I'm not a big fan of Sabian, but I really like those primary hats he's playing =]

  • this guy writes REALLY cool stuff. I cant decide on a ride. A Sabian 22" apx solid ride a Paiste 22" alpha metal ride OR a Meinl 20" mb10 bell blast ride

  • Between the Meinl and the PAiste. Depends on what music you play, too. Meinl is going to be more for rock and heavier stuff, while the alpha is more versatile, and will have a deeper tone. APX is terrible. Honestly, B8 is better.

  • APX is the loudest and easiest to record of those three.

  • well chris adler (lamb of god) uses the meinl (he helped develop it in fact) so it'll be for more metal type stuff. but so will the sabian seeing as the apx series is designed for metal. and paiste alpha is edorsed by joey jordison...

its a tough coice but i'd go with the sabian cause IMO sabians have a sort of warmish feel that i love in cymbals. thats just me though.

  • actually aax is for metal, apx is for explosive effects.

  • on the site and in the ad it shows aax being aimed at "modern bright" players and is endorsed more famously (other than ray maygora) by people like daniel adair.

apx shows a much more metal style themed with pore metal drummers.

besides the point the idea for the explosive sound was most probably thought out with metal in mind more so than modern bright

  • if any one knows is there a zildjian crash that has a similar or exactly same sound as the sabian 18" HHX Studio Crash its really pissing me off i cant find a cymbal to complement my zildjian 18" medium-thin crash

  • what cymbal is he using at 00:18?

  • it's a stack. a small china on a splash. and thats his own signature cymbal. it's a Max Stax 10"

  • and also cause he is a percusionist, need to read the credits moron!, drums and percusion( look out at wikipedia whats a percusionist)...dumb your mother! make u so stupid

  • u can do more stuff on a 9 pice than a 5

  • 7 isnt small dude. 3 or 4 is small

  • compared to that big ass shit yeah it is..

  • More pieces = more timbres.

It adds to the musicality, and prog rock is ALL about maximum musicality.

  • You're exactly right. I'm in a prog rock/metal band and I've got the same cymbal set up as him except for the two stacks he's got and the chime set.

  • VicenteKidd, cause he can pay big kits...

  • what hats does he use in this video??

  • 2:00 what song is?

  • lines in the sand

  • look like ray charles on drums with his glasses

  • parece un serbio traficante de armas

  • that was awesome i like sabian a lot and i was lucky enough to build the same kit before price got sky rocket i ended up paying $15,000 took me 3 years and its almost the same kit but it's not a tama kit it's a pearl so that actually counts a lot tama it's much more money but i got the same kit with a few extras my biggest mike portnoy rip off but what the hell ..........

  • hahaha, u fail

  • YUP, EPIC FAIL.

  • what is that stick his using?

  • theyre hot rods as used by dave grohl in nirvana unplugged, kinda like wooden brushes, lighter than normal sticks but harder than brushes, flix also do platic versions for various styles

  • They're also called Reeds.

  • i have to agree with bryce..the kit exceeds at least 30g's hands down! i live down the street from a studio in bmt, tx..and inside i noticed how much tama's prices went up on just their accessories..much more than that, their kits. its outrageous! $75 for just a tom clamp! f*** that, ill shop GC's website.

  • If you somehow contacted Sabian and Tama to get a kit and cymbals exactly like this, it would be worth some where between $20,000 to $30,000.

  • Fuck, there goes my dream kit Haha

  • get signed first then its all free

  • my dream is to buy this awsome kit. do u guys knw how much is cost.

  • i cant stand joey, but that's just me.

  • I like him, he is a fine player.

  • at least someone is firm in the drummer he likes most of the drummers I know suitch their favorite drummers like every month or so...but I dont have a favorite...I have favorites like ...Mike, Peart, Jordison...Svenson...and so on...

    THATS JUST ME :)

  • That was a really good answer I think.

  • How can you even compare Joye to Mike Portnoy... Mike Portnoy has revolutionized double bass drumss/precussion playing he took Neil Perts work further ahead Joye is alright but comparison is a silly thing and the type of musician/drummer Mike is I dare not compare him to anyone he is Mike Portnoy end of story :)

  • @Monoloconwhisky D: WTF It's been 2 years since this comment and I find it really unnecesary now LOL, I'm glad I find myself to be a little more open minded now, sorry guys.

    Keep Drumming.

  • BennyBennis knows his stuff, Kollias does not come up that often when talking about awesome drummers, but he is something else.

  • yea it pisses me off aswell when ignorant people think drummers such as Joey Jordison and Travis Barker are the best, you people obviously don't know anything if you haven't heard of drummers like Mike portnoy, Terry Bozzio, Chris Adler( who is like Joey but better), and George Kollias (also like Joey but better)

  • I want to snap someone's neck whenever I hear Travis Barker..

  • so do i lol, i don't get as mad when people say that joey's good though cause i like slipknot and he admits that he isn't the greatest drummer ever on one of his videos, but hes still good, however travis barker is a piece of shit.

  • I am truly annoyed when i see a comments hailing joey and others of his kind. The drummers that are out there can kick joey's ass and beat him to death !! I mean, really, i consider it a federal violation to even talk about him when i could be discusing about gavin harisson, dave weckl, omar hakim, steve gadd, steve smith and a whole bunch of others.Joey is just a metal drummer, nothing more, nothing less. The sooner every immature kid realises that, the better for himself and for every other !!!

  • You stole my speech; nicely utilized too I might add.

  • Haha !! thank's ;)

  • thats because they are main stream, fame has nothing to do with skill. there are probably underground societies that revolve around the drum set that teach their people to be 20 times better than neil peart, buddy rich , and mike portnoy. they could be out there.

  • Sorry to interupt your guys' debate (even though the guy who likes travis and joey is a fuckin idiot=])

Anyone have the year on this video? or at least after/before which album?

  • His kit is the Scenes From A Memory kit (the Purple Monster), so I suppose around 1999-2000.

  • I was thinkin that too, thanks :)

  • hha exactly

  • Famous, yes. Talented? NO AT ALL. Mike Portnoy would take a shit on them with just a snare and a crash. Joey and Travis to be in the top 1000 drummers. Shitknot and Cunt 182 suck balls anyways.

  • And you think popularity and fame makes the drummers good?

  • your an idiot, have you see Joey's kit lately?

Yeah Travis and Joey are good drummers but they can touch Portnoy, and I am an openly known Maggot so I'm not hating joey.
