i need some help explaining to my father inlaw the steps to remove and purging water from my 85 chevy k20 deployed in afghanistan right now and he dont know jack about diesels a quick link for video footage on how to do it would be awsome but no luck there any one know some good sites to visit??????????????
a friend of mine an i worked on a 6.2 in our auto tech shop. u can go to my channel an watch the 2 vids i have of it. the first one was our first year getting it running after it sat 6 years an had water in the cylinders.
I'm new to diesels, I just bought a 92 6.2 sierra and its idling a lil ruff around 450 rpm's. is there a way to turn up the idle or would this turning up the fuel delivery do the same thing?
@happyspaghettios theres a little flatheaded screw on the throttle arm on the drivers side of the pump near where the throttle cable hooks on. screw that in untill the idle is up to around 750.
The 6.2 is a good diesel. Ive owned two over the years in two cucv blazers. What will kill a 6.2 is high rpm and/or heat. Drive it like a grandpa and it will last you forever. Some of the older 5.7's gave the 6.2 a bad name. The 5.7 was hit and mis. Some were great , but most were junk. I had an 83 monte carlo with a 5.7 and it was a good one. 27 mpg and lasted. The 7.3 is a great diesel. Im a chevy guy, but the 7.3 is the next best thing to a cummins.
Great video and all, but from one car guy to another, and it's only a friendly suggestion, that wearing your watch is dangerous, if you were working on a battery, it can short out and give you 3rd degree burns, and if you catch it on something you could sprain or break your wrist. Not hating on you, just a friendly suggestion from a fellow car nut.
@6030diesel my brother did that and blew the hands off of his watch. he bridged the contact points on accident on the safety light on a battery powered industrial lift truck. after i saw he wasnt hurt i laughed at him. heard a real loud pop and a bright light lol.
In the next couple of weeks i am buying my first truck and it is going to be a 84 C10 6.2 diesel and was wondering about the 6.2 is it reliable is it cheap to maintain what kind of mileage does it really get. From what i heard on the internet it's supposed to get around 23mpg.Can any one help me out.
im fixing to swap out my 305 for a 6.2 in a 1980 chevy 1ton is was factory with a 350, and it has a sm465 transmission and a 5.13 rear axle ratio, i currently turn 3800rpm to go 70, is it safe to turn a 6.2l that fast? if not ill go to 4.10s witch is no problem i have a new axle laying around
@6030diesel okay thanks i didnt know that was red line for them ive never driven one before with a 6.2L but ive seen pleanty of 6.5s im also trying to decide to go with a 6.5 or with a 6.2L i have a choice right now on either one i realy want a reliable diesel witch i think would be the 6.2L right? i think its even a model J military version
@mirlin235 thats false the 6.2 and 6.5 N/Aturbo have way more power than a turbo 7.3 idi and are alot more reliable, ive seen more 6.2s with over 280,000 miles on them and never seen a 7.3 go over 100,000 without injector problems or blowing up the only problem ive seen the 6.2s or 6.5s have is the stock harmonic balancers fail due to improper cold starts then being out of balance over time will crack the crank shaft or shear off the fly wheel bolts
@DRNEGOLICIS Are you being serious with your comment?
A 7.3L might have less power, but its sure as HELL not going to blow up, or have injector problems, they have been very well known to go too a million miles or more, and I know alot of guys with them that have yet to have issues with the engine tranny
If you think the 7.3 is a crappy motor then kid, you have some serious issues, there are more of them(both idi, and turbo diesel versions) on the road still than there are 6.2s and 6.5s
@6030diesel Hey, a couple of questions for you, I got it all done, but I still have the water pump off. How hard is it going to be to start this thing now that the inj pump is empty? Also, where did you get your intake setup that is bolted to the manifold? Thanks again.
@joeygtech1369 wont be hard at all. you only emptied the bowl. the plungers and head are still full of air free dieselfuel. the presure chamber thats on my intake i made myself out of an old fire extinguisher. its part of my homemade turbo setup.
I just bought a DB2-4723 series injection pump for my 6.2 and I turned up the fuel before I put it in cuz its a lot easier to get to the little fuel screw from the access panel on the side when its not attached to the engine. I only turned it 1/6th of a turn since I have no intake mods yet.
i have a k5 blazer running 4.10 gears and 37 inch tires with a 700r4 tranny great off road. as for the durability i have litteraly beat and abused this motor for 3 years and it is indestructable. i have a video on a hill where i am on the rev limiter for a long time check it out
@6030diesel Hi, thanks for sharing this video. We are trying to get a GMC 6.2 to work properly, as it totally doesn't provide power (and smoke) at all...most likely it hasn't got enough of fuel. We changed the Allan screw 1/8th of a turn, but don't know which direction to turt it to, counterclockwide or clockwise, as neither gives any stationary improvement...Can you point out what the correct direction is in order to provide more fuel?
@6030diesel ....its neat, however i dislike ti because it limits you to using the stock filter and drilling holes in the sides so it breathes easier..thats not good for my burb.. (check my videos, u'll get what im talking about lol)
I have some black smoke when i'm under power and get only 15 to 17 mpg. I want better gas mileage what will it do if you turn it back 1/8 or a 1/4 not worried about Hp but need the mileage to come up. it also has 307 gears and i want to know if 373 is to low for highway use. I do have the 700r4. OD what is every bodys thoughts. thanks
@MG2ndamendment the 307s and the 700R4 are what kills your milage. with 3.73's and that OD gear youll be golden. the 307's make the engine lug all the time on the highway so that hurts the milage and engine life. turning the fuel back wont do anything unless you drive with the pedal floored all the time since all it does is regulate full throttle fuel, not moderate throttle fuel.
I had the same problem with my K5 until i got rid of the EGR stuff and blocked the port off in the intake. I had more power immediately and no more smoke. So if you have a light duty truck (which it sounds like you do witha 700R4) then i highly suggest you do this.
Better yet is to install a j-code intake which does away entirely with the EGR ports and will actually benefit from turning the fuel up instead of just making smoke.
NEVER USE ETHER ON ANY DIESEL, unless you know what youre doin. all these gm diesels have auto glow plug controllers from factory, meaning, when you key on the glow plugs activate for their set cycle, depending on engine temp. now, the only way it doesnt have glow controller, is if someone has placed a ground switch on the relay thus having manual glow plugs. basically dont use ether on a truck you dont know. overtime, repeadted ether use will turn the truck to an ether whore, even at 90degrees
@TheMackmaniac Don't you think 90 degrees is a little high. I've seen trucks start a 45 degrees with out glow plugs, you are correct in saying not to use ether though. With powerstrokes it can fire befor the piston is at top dead center and break the rods. The only engines it is completely safe is caterpillars from the mid 80's on up because they have ether stating assist built in instead of glow plugs, when in doubt plug it in or get a heater to warm the engine. Portable heaters make it easy.
you can also take the inspection plate off on the side of the pump and rotate the motor to get to the screw. it's a lot easier than doing it the way shown in the video
@6030diesel i had a 6.9 in my 85 f250 and my injection pump went out and i sold the truck. i shold've kept it cuz after i sold it i found an injection pump for like 150 bucks
@6030diesel ok i gotta ask how good are these 6.2 engines are they reliable and strong im looking to get a truck to carry my welding machine and my 350 well shes on her last lap the reason i ask is cause i found a 85 crew cab 1ton dually with a 6.2 super straigh body no dents or rust so if you or somebody who reads this tell me about this engine please tell me i would greatly appreciate it
@kd5lpr theyre no 12V cummins... theyre fairly reliable but powerwise, without a turbocharger, you wont be going as fast as you were with your 350. i know people have put turbos on them and overboosted the hell out them, and over a long time they spit the crank out the side of the block. ive had my truck for 2 years, and its had the turbo on it for a year and a half and i have in no way been nice to it. seems to be running strong. a 1 ton will have the higher horse version of the 6.2 with 150 hp
@6030diesel but would it be worth buying going to banks get the turbo kit and take it to a diesal tech i use to be a tech but never for diesels so i wont touch a turbo i appreciate all the info i just need to know if it would be worth it or if i should just go get a 454
@kd5lpr you can retro fit on a 6.5 turbo setup. with the intake manifold, exhaust manifold and turbocharger then have an exhaust shop fab up some exhaust for it. a 454 would break you on fuel for sure but it would out haul the 6.2 80X over lol. but the 6.2 will haul that welder at 60 mph and get about 19 mpg doing it. with the turbo you could haul it at 75+ but only get around 17 mpg or 16.
@6030diesel man i really do appreciate it it means a lot now let me run this by you this 85 crew cab 6.2 has bee sittin for a year in a shop and iv never owned a diesel only gas what do i need to look for when it starts up color of the exhaust knocking leaking ETC just something to look for or even when its just sitting there not running and if its hard to start is it wise to use eather i think thats how u spell it lol or is there a safer way to get it to fire up
@kd5lpr U can use ether just dont use ur glowplugs its really bad for them !! just unplug the relay or the solenoid much better than risking engine failure!
im new in the diesel industry ... i just purchase a 2500 6.2 and would like to make it blow black smoke would this be the only way or is there other option thx
@jackass22x this is the only way to make them blow black other than to put ducttape over the airfilter. although IDI diesels arent built to blow black smoke. really the only safe black smoke with an IDI is the black smoke you get before the turbocharger spools if you have one. but if you gotta blow some black, buy a pyrometer gauge and install it, and watch the EGTs. dont let them get over 1100*F and you'll be fine.
@kenfo0 its enough of a difference that you can feel it while driving, and it makes the truck easier to drive. its not constantly struggling to keep going, instead its cruising along happily.
@6030diesel My dad did that +1/8th to his old 86' 6.2 van, along with garbaging the EGR valve (MUAHAHAHAHA!) and plugging up the hole, plus adding a 3in DUAL exhaust, K&N air filter, Raptor transmission & a 4.11 rear gear. OH AND MEASURING EACH PISTON THEN SHAVING OFF THE EXTRA METAL for balance, YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE how off balance your pistons could be... SERIOUSLY! His old (now totaled out) van could keep up with any 6.5L turbo. It was faster than MY Chevy 5.7L van with 210HP/300ftIb torque
the solonoids usually need power to allow fuel flow so when u pull wire off they stop otherwise they would have to be live the entire time engine is not running.
@tpvalley yes they need power to operate. but when the power is cut, the solonoid pushes on the linkage inside killing the engine. so when the cap is gone, nothing is pushing on the linkage so its in run position.
I had mine rev right up when I put the top cover back on,solenoid linkage jammed and when pulled solenoid wire it dropped 500 or so revs-still revin hard until I undid water/fuel separater drain screw-Died almost straight away-scary though-makes quite a difference turning screw-also the 5/16 screw in the transfer port made alot more low end grunt too
Dont use the starter to bump it over to line up the fuel screw! Use the socket as noted. I had one fire up on me with the cover off, and it was a runaway. It was a really bad day, plus it's an experience I dont want to repeat!
I tried a jacket in the intake, then a fire extinguisher. Nothing worked. It ran until it overheated and seized. That was almost 10 yrs ago though. Not quite as scary as when the 8V92 Detroit ranaway in the army. Either way, it's a traumatizing event.
the smokes comes from driving her around, mostly going up hill/ high rpm's. the smoke is black like its turned up all the way & towing a house. mite also gotta do with the rear end is on its way out
hers my deal. i got a 86 6.2 in a burban, i shouldnt of but i did. i turned a screw rite under the cruse control silonide, it has a screw on it aswell. i dont remember what way i turned it or how much, but she has smoked ever since i got her. lol got pulled over bc of it with no plates (had a transit sticker) anyone know what i should do here about that screw? i believe she smokes bc i havnt gotten her out & she has been basically set up for 2 years, except when i took her offroading :D
wanna do mine too? actually i've got too much fuel it seems. When i stomp it i get black-ish gray clouds from the pipes. Time for a better flowing air filter me thinks.
right now what i need is a Stanadyne model 80 filter housing. Mines leaking still even after removing the vac sensor tapping and threading in a bolt with sealant into the sensor hole. Piece of shit design. Should just find a racor with a WIF light and a fuel heater and be done with that box style filter for good.
All I have to do is remove a small triangle cover on the pass side of the IP, turn the engine untill I see the allen set screw, set it, put the cover back on and prime the system, and fire up. Don't need to remove anything else but the little 1" triangle cover.
theres a triangle cover on mine but to get to it you have to remove the intake and then its still hard to get at. this is so much easier. the hardest part of this is turning the engine by yourself to line it up. ive done this 3 times by myself and this time was the quickest by far.
my cover is facing the driverside of the engine. so the turbo doesnt really affect much. if anything the turbo on the engine made this easier since i didnt ahve to remove the big ugly airfilter housing to get to the ip cover.

@6030diesel ok i gotta ask how good are these 6.2 engines are they reliable and strong im looking to get a truck to carry my welding machine and my 350 well shes on her last lap the reason i ask is cause i found a 85 crew cab 1ton dually with a 6.2 super straigh body no dents or rust so if you or somebody who reads this tell me about this engine please tell me i would greatly appreciate it
kd5lpr 1 year ago
@kd5lpr theyre no 12V cummins... theyre fairly reliable but powerwise, without a turbocharger, you wont be going as fast as you were with your 350. i know people have put turbos on them and overboosted the hell out them, and over a long time they spit the crank out the side of the block. ive had my truck for 2 years, and its had the turbo on it for a year and a half and i have in no way been nice to it. seems to be running strong. a 1 ton will have the higher horse version of the 6.2 with 150 hp
6030diesel 1 year ago
@6030diesel but would it be worth buying going to banks get the turbo kit and take it to a diesal tech i use to be a tech but never for diesels so i wont touch a turbo i appreciate all the info i just need to know if it would be worth it or if i should just go get a 454
kd5lpr 1 year ago
@kd5lpr you can retro fit on a 6.5 turbo setup. with the intake manifold, exhaust manifold and turbocharger then have an exhaust shop fab up some exhaust for it. a 454 would break you on fuel for sure but it would out haul the 6.2 80X over lol. but the 6.2 will haul that welder at 60 mph and get about 19 mpg doing it. with the turbo you could haul it at 75+ but only get around 17 mpg or 16.

@6030diesel man i really do appreciate it it means a lot now let me run this by you this 85 crew cab 6.2 has bee sittin for a year in a shop and iv never owned a diesel only gas what do i need to look for when it starts up color of the exhaust knocking leaking ETC just something to look for or even when its just sitting there not running and if its hard to start is it wise to use eather i think thats how u spell it lol or is there a safer way to get it to fire up
kd5lpr 1 year ago
@kd5lpr U can use ether just dont use ur glowplugs its really bad for them !! just unplug the relay or the solenoid much better than risking engine failure!

im new in the diesel industry ... i just purchase a 2500 6.2 and would like to make it blow black smoke would this be the only way or is there other option thx
jackass22x 1 year ago
@jackass22x this is the only way to make them blow black other than to put ducttape over the airfilter. although IDI diesels arent built to blow black smoke. really the only safe black smoke with an IDI is the black smoke you get before the turbocharger spools if you have one. but if you gotta blow some black, buy a pyrometer gauge and install it, and watch the EGTs. dont let them get over 1100*F and you'll be fine.
6030diesel 1 year ago
@6030diesel actually the ford IDI diesels were NON turbo
chevyredneck85 1 year ago
@chevyredneck85 the 1993-mid 1994 IDI 7.3's were factory turbo models. but i was talking about a 6.2.

hi. good vid. what is the effect of turning the pump up 1/8? Is it a meaningful amount of power? has anyone measured it?
kenfo0 1 year ago
@kenfo0 its enough of a difference that you can feel it while driving, and it makes the truck easier to drive. its not constantly struggling to keep going, instead its cruising along happily.
6030diesel 1 year ago
It was faster than MY Chevy 5.7L van with 210HP/300ftIb torque

how can it start with solonoid off?
tpvalley 1 year ago
@tpvalley because the solonoid pushes the fuel off. so when its not in there the fuel is turned on.
6030diesel 1 year ago
@6030diesel
the solonoids usually need power to allow fuel flow so when u pull wire off they stop otherwise they would have to be live the entire time engine is not running.
when u turn ignition ON solonoid is live.
tpvalley 1 year ago
@tpvalley yes they need power to operate. but when the power is cut, the solonoid pushes on the linkage inside killing the engine. so when the cap is gone, nothing is pushing on the linkage so its in run position.
6030diesel 1 year ago
@6030diesel
ah, I see, the only ones Ive seen have simply been a small rubberised magnetic plunger, I thought that linkage was the accelerator/governor linkage.
tpvalley 1 year ago
I had mine rev right up when I put the top cover back on,solenoid linkage jammed and when pulled solenoid wire it dropped 500 or so revs-still revin hard until I undid water/fuel separater drain screw-Died almost straight away-scary though-makes quite a difference turning screw-also the 5/16 screw in the transfer port made alot more low end grunt too
mutto82 1 year ago
Word of caution:
Dont use the starter to bump it over to line up the fuel screw! Use the socket as noted. I had one fire up on me with the cover off, and it was a runaway. It was a really bad day, plus it's an experience I dont want to repeat!
nevrenufhp 1 year ago
@nevrenufhp i think i said that in the video. how did you get the runaway to shut off? push the linkage in the ip? or toss a board over the intake?
6030diesel 1 year ago
@6030diesel
I tried a jacket in the intake, then a fire extinguisher. Nothing worked. It ran until it overheated and seized. That was almost 10 yrs ago though. Not quite as scary as when the 8V92 Detroit ranaway in the army. Either way, it's a traumatizing event.
nevrenufhp 1 year ago
if it was mine, unless i was freaking out. i would have tried to clamp a pair of pliars on the rubber fuel line to the ip near the fuel filter.
6030diesel 1 year ago
@nevrenufhp
it cant start because he disconnected shut off solonoid wire.
tpvalley 1 year ago
is it possible for these to rev to 5000?
Hotrodx199 1 year ago
@Hotrodx199 no i dont think it is. from what ive heard max revs for a 6.2 are around 4300.
6030diesel 1 year ago
7 grand damn wat kindsa motor u got tht pump is oly rated ofr 5 before it blows lol jk the pump is only rated for 5 though
chevyman198301 1 year ago
@chevyman198301 yea i was wrong. this one will only rev to 4 grand. mybe 4300 tops.

the smokes comes from driving her around, mostly going up hill/ high rpm's. the smoke is black like its turned up all the way & towing a house. mite also gotta do with the rear end is on its way out
doldford3456 2 years ago
hers my deal. i got a 86 6.2 in a burban, i shouldnt of but i did. i turned a screw rite under the cruse control silonide, it has a screw on it aswell. i dont remember what way i turned it or how much, but she has smoked ever since i got her. lol got pulled over bc of it with no plates (had a transit sticker) anyone know what i should do here about that screw? i believe she smokes bc i havnt gotten her out & she has been basically set up for 2 years, except when i took her offroading :D
doldford345 2 years ago
that sounds like you turned the idle screw. what colour smoke? if tis kinda white and blue your injection pump sounds like its on its way out.
6030diesel 2 years ago
wanna do mine too? actually i've got too much fuel it seems. When i stomp it i get black-ish gray clouds from the pipes. Time for a better flowing air filter me thinks.
iamdave0887 2 years ago
sure just remove it and ship it up here and ill turn it down then send it back and you can put it on. :P
6030diesel 2 years ago
right now what i need is a Stanadyne model 80 filter housing. Mines leaking still even after removing the vac sensor tapping and threading in a bolt with sealant into the sensor hole. Piece of shit design. Should just find a racor with a WIF light and a fuel heater and be done with that box style filter for good.
iamdave0887 2 years ago
yea that would do it. hopefully my filter never buggers up on me or im SOL
6030diesel 2 years ago
Wow much easier doing this on a 6.9/7.3
All I have to do is remove a small triangle cover on the pass side of the IP, turn the engine untill I see the allen set screw, set it, put the cover back on and prime the system, and fire up. Don't need to remove anything else but the little 1" triangle cover.
Great vid!
IDIDieselJohn 2 years ago
theres a triangle cover on mine but to get to it you have to remove the intake and then its still hard to get at. this is so much easier. the hardest part of this is turning the engine by yourself to line it up. ive done this 3 times by myself and this time was the quickest by far.
6030diesel 2 years ago
Your cover is facing the back of the engine. So yeah, no room with a turbo back there. Me turbo or not, it's easy :D but heh even easier without one!
IDIDieselJohn 2 years ago
my cover is facing the driverside of the engine. so the turbo doesnt really affect much. if anything the turbo on the engine made this easier since i didnt ahve to remove the big ugly airfilter housing to get to the ip cover.

Nicely done.

thanks. it was about time someones done a step by step on how to do this properly.
