It is a misconception that all orcas hunt dolphins. Like humans, they have their own social groups and behaviours. Some orcas hunt larger marine prey while other groups primarily feed on fish. Often the two types of hunters will not socialize with one another.

Orcas are the rulers of the water world and if they could adapt to land we would be in trouble.Fact the embryo of an orca looks the same as a human it has 5 fingers 2 arms 2 legs the whole embryo

Orcas are actually considered the largest species of the dolphin family, they attack pretty much anything, a few pods have been known to hunt gray whale calves, and there is even a case of a female hunting great whites, theyre also the fastest things in the water, and have a brain bout four times the size of ours and have the potential for a great amount of intelligence, theyre pretty interesting little buggers

@Sami379 Good comments except when you mention that they are the fastest things in the water. They are far from it. They are slower than Sailfish, Swordfish and Marlin and also Yellow and Bluefin Tuna, the Mako shark and several others.

Orcas aren't exactly a simple creature. The kinds of orcas that generally eat tuna are not the type to hunt dolphins, and vice versa. These different types of orcas will not breed with each other.

That is an arbitrary distinction made by humans, i.e., the different "species" of Orcas are fully capable of interbreeding, they simply haven't been observed doing so, presumably on account of "cultural" factors. I predict that as tuna stocks are depleted, many "tuna eating" Orca will be preying upon marine mammals.

By analogy, certain populations of White sharks in the northern Pacific region have a "gentically distinct" gene pool. It is would be equally inapt to suggest that they are a separate species. Members of this White shark gene pool travel on distant migrations, perhaps under pressure to increase genetic diversity.

I simply think that ALL Orca populations share the same species-specific adaptations and are fully CAPABLE of interbreeding. Human researchers have tried to separate the "three" groups and have gone so far as to call transient Orcas the "bad" killer whales. Orcas are opportunistic, generalist feeders. Different gene pools utilize different available resources. That's it.

There are different breeds of dogs. boxers, bulldogs, huskies, dobermans, collies, etc. They look different because of adaptations due to either where they originated or how they were bred. And yet, each can still mate with another and create an offspring. A chihuahua and boxer are definitely not ENTIRELY the same... but bring two together and see what you get

Orcas are amazing predators, I mean dolphins do defend themselves against white sharks, but it seems against their much heavier clever and stronger cousin i.e. the killer whale common dolphins don't even dare put up a fight.

That is an amazing video. Do you know if this is common behaviour for orcas? The music really made it dramatic. I hate to see the dolphins killed, but I love orcas as well.

it is common that they would kill dolphins. to them, they are food. but the way these orcas were going at it, throwing them up in the air, not usually observed. the person who was leading the trip has been doing these trips for about 30 years, she had seen orcas hunting before, but nothing that would compare to this. I think it was a pretty rare thing to see. It was amazing.

This is truly amazing. Those porpoising behaviors are something you barely witness in the wild, they usually train orcas in captivity to do this. Its amazing that Killer Whales are actually dolphins, its like, cannibalism! xD Incredible footage. You should send it to Nat Geo or something!

I was also on the boat watching this scene. It was the most incredible thing I have ever seen, bar none. Are there other videos from this same trip? There were a lot of people with cameras! This is an awesome video of a rarely witnessed event. The music may seem a little dramatic, but having witnessed the kill myself, I can tell you that the real thing was very dramatic. Two Common Dolphins were hanging around Monterey's Cannery Row for several weeks. This is unusual, as they are usually found in big herds of 100's or 1000's. How this mother/calf pair came to be separated from their herd is a mystery.
