As far as "not much of a boat": you can say that about MOST of the destroyers in service today compared to a US Arleigh Burke-class, Russian Sovremenny or the British Type 45-class ships. Remember that ships fight as part of task forces and not on their own. ANY destroyer by itself is very vulnerable to air, submarine or anti-ship missile attack.

Surface-to-Air Missile launchers, one forward and one aft on the ship. any ships or aircraft carriers , airplanes hit by any missiles won't know the difference if they are coming from the VLS or not.

As recent as 1912, the end of Qing Dynasty (or Manchu Dynasty), China map goes as far as Hunan Island and does not include South China Sea. In 1949, when the communists won over China, that was when the China dogs began to expand by redrawing its map to include South China Sea. All the world maps by other countries show Paracel and Spratly Islands in the South China Sea belong to Vietnam. China sees potential oil there, that's why they want to rob it from Vietnam. You have missed the history of China. True no one laid much of a claim on South China sea before. However, China decided to claim the entire South China Sea in the 1920s when the nationalists drew the map. This is why Taiwan also claims the whole South China Sea. Taiwan also claims Mongolia, by the way. Vietnam didn't really lay any claims on the islands until much later when offshore oil exploration started to kick in.

@TheKuzmovka... There aren't any 16" guns still in use anymore. This ship is just one of many in the Chinese PLA Navy. Later ships are more capable. As far as "not much of a boat": you can say that about MOST of the destroyers in service today compared to a US Arleigh Burke-class, Russian Sovremenny or the British Type 45-class ships. Remember that ships fight as part of task forces and not on their own. ANY destroyer by itself is very vulnerable to air, submarine or anti-ship missile attack.

In 1979 Sino Vietnam Border War, the PLA only deployed their Army and had kept the Airforce and Navy as Reserve because of swift success in capturing Vietnamese terrioty.
Hanoi was within the reach of being captured by PLA if not of China unilateral wiathdrawl after having taught Vietnam a lesson.

PLA only faced local militias on the mountain. VC and Russian missiles were waiting for the Chinese near Hanoi and Russian troops started shelling North China. That why the Chinese ran back too quickly. VN held back because we just came out of two big wars and didn't another war. But now the VC are fully fed and ready for the Chinese.

British Warships don't fly the Union Flag when under way, they fly only the White Ensign (which is a white background, with red cross and the Union Jack in the top corner)

We will have 6 type 45's by 2013 and have been proven to have the longest range of any destroyer in the world and are able to take out the US aircraft carriers without even popping up on the radar. China depends upon Russia for military technology although it is beginning to develop weapons on its own. And China's military is growing into a technological equipped force suited for high intensity conventional warfare but it can't take on the US but maybe (low chance) Russia and definitely France. For now.
With China's growing economy it will probably match the US in the not-too-distant future.
Let's hope they don't have a president like George Bush in the future! =)

but i think on sheer numbers, USA will struggle. but i do agree that china would benfit more with a few more decades under it's belt before gaining that status. and even if they did have an uber tyrant, foreign policy would be conducted in such a way that all out confrontation would be avoided with the big forces. otherwise i dont see much hope of us orbiting the solar system for much longer lol

I doubt this as France would either fight alongside her Nato allies in which case thnx to US might she would have an overwhelming advantage or with her EU partners and given German and British economic, industrial and military power this again puts the odds bk in favour of France.

Two antiship missiles hit the USS Stark and caused a couple of hundred million dollars damage. and half of these antiship missiles didn't exploded after penetrated the hulls, because they were exported grade missiles (exocets). These missiles would have loaded down(downgraded) explosives and penetration and homing abilities.

The best examples of how effective antiship missiles are from the Falkland war and the attack on the USS frigate Starr. Five antiship missiles were used on the Royal navy (Argentina had
only 5 air launch exocets, no air to air missile for fighter protections), and managed to destroy two ships.

Modern antiship missiles can be very smart. they can fly all kinds of flightpaths, given a good computer program. they can fly over smaller ships, attack from the top of ships if program to be. apply
counter-measures as well. confuse tracking radar systems. with a 500lb high explosive warhead. it can cause a huge damage to any ships like the carriers. Carriers carry a lot of aviation fuel,ammunitions and worst thing ; a nulcear reactor.

carrier has only one landing strip. getting enough planes in the air is a very busy task, when numerous antiship missiles are coming your way in a very short notice. Carrier battle group won't have
enough reaction time to counter defense. and you can't have too many fighters patrolling in the air for too long at
any single time.

Container launchers are more cost effective than the VLS; I believe.
Conventional submarines are perhaps better platforms (cost effectiveness)
than any other missile warships , to launch anti-ship missiles (cruise missiles) under water against high-value ships.

I don't think the Guangzhou (Type 052B) is designed for VLS. 4 quad Anti-Ship Cruise Missile launchers(16 YJ-83 anti-ship missiles) located amidships. Surface-to-Air Missile launchers, one forward and one aft on the ship. any ships or aircraft carriers , airplanes hit by any missiles won't know the difference if they are coming from the VLS or not.
