Vander , digne héritier du touché d'elvin Jones et de la musique de Coltrane . "On n'as dit que Magma n'étais pas " : 1969 - 2012 .... la musique Zeuhl à encore de beau jours devant elle.
Vander is incredible, marshalling his troops from behind his kit and seemingly eyeballing other band members threateningly lest they should make an error. Gets the best out of a small 'meat and potatoes' kit. When I saw them at the Royal Festival Hall in London just before the Millenium the TV series "League of Gentlemen" was making waves. Vander reminded me of one of the characters - boggle-eyed East European newsagent nutter 'Pop'.

surprised to find that 5 people discovered this by mistake and watched it long enough to give a negative opinion. Magma you either hate or love. I LOVE!!!
The Sigil at the back central part of the stage... looks almost exactly like a Scrin Sigil! The ones of CNC3, not Tiberian Sun though, cuz those are hinted to be different Scrin...
Hmmm le son des claviers est délicieux, et le solo sur le Roland (c'est qui d'ailleurs, Emmanuel Borghi ?) est très bon. Et puis Antoine assure sévère !!
I've been going through some of their videos and each song has such a different feel. I like it... This is the first i've come to that's so fusion. Can anyone suggest their favorite for me to buy?
For their early fusion sound, 1001 is a good recommendation. But for me, the pared down, ritualesque jazz-chant of Wurdah Itah (1974) cannot be topped!
The 2 studio releases of the 2000s, Kohntarkosz Anteria and Emehnteht-Re, are also worthy candidates--finally Magma studio recording that does them justice. K.a has more of a jazz sound, though heavy in repetitive chant.
Any of the DVDs are also good starting points (you can get Trilogy at Trianon on CD or download as well).
@pentacleofvenus If you haven't found them already, I suggest Weather Report, Miles Davis, Return To Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, Henry Cow, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Doldinger-Passport.
The sheer power the band puts into their live performances, even 35 years on, is frightening. The level of intensity is unmatched by any other group, even The Who at their 69-71 peak. I am always totally overwhelmed by these Youtube clips--the group are like an invading force from another planet, with Vander as emperor. They've totally conquered *my* universe.
@mtopper66 i am a beloved magma fan for 30 years or more. but im very unkind for all the nazi discussion youll find for c. vander on the net. so i dont want him for emperor, as any other musician either.- at last , -great music from a disturbed mind.
From 4:24 on, Borghi is on fire, with great backup from Widemann. An unusual and interesting version. I read Paganotti brother and sister have left the band since then : that sucks, they ruled.
THis is fusion, baby. I picked this album up at the beginning of the 80s. Never thought I'd get to see a live performance of it. Christian is still amazing decades later. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I found the Attahk record in a cutout bin in 1984 and loved the Geiger artwork so much I bought it.
It just blew my mind and shattered all my preconceptions about music. I've never listened the same way again, even though it's been a while since I've played them.
Used to know the whole record on bass and most of the lyrics too.
while watching magma in complete and utter awe one almost expects all of the instruments to spontaneously combust. they're that damn good. france/magma concert is definitely on my top things to experience list.
Have you seen? James is playing bass instead of guitar on this one, along with Philippe.
I'm a "new" Magma fan, I discovered them with K.A. That was some kind of revelation to me.
I was somewhat dissapointed with the recording quality of their earlier studio albums. It doesn't do justice to this great music.
Thankfully that was solved with the four "Mythes et légendes" DVDs. The reinterpretation of their old classics have much greater quality than the original recordings.
This is just ridiculously cool. One of the best Magma performances I have seen. It's too bad the video fades out before the song is finished. Oh well, I have to get the DVD, I guess...
Well, it is true, we do/did have people like Jean Luc Ponty, Michel Petrucciani, Serge Gainsbourg or Michel Legrand, but they are more exceptions than the rule :-)
All the members of Magma always seem to be having so much fun on stage, even when the material they're singing is serious. Did you see how the female singers were smiling while Antoine sang his intense Zeuhl chant?
As intense as Klaus did way back. There playing in Lille in March, so I'm going to cross the border with France for the first time in 27 years. Magma is the best reason for that...

In my opinion Magma Live with Kohntark and De Futura from Udu Wudu are probably the two musical pieces that have brought me the farthest...
Listening to them in the dark with nothing to bother is a real journey into Magma's experience..
But other albums until 1980 might work as well depending on your taste :)
