I believe music is the power to induce thoughts and emotions into someones mind, and to make them feel the way you do, with the music and words. Most of today's mainstream music's aim isn't that. This song, has done exactly that. :')

@Isuzu27 Excuse me? It's offensive? My point was all this argument about whether or not this is "emo" or not is useless. I was quoting the term used commonly throughout this discussion. My claim? My claim that its art? How is that melodramatic? Is music not art? The point of your response confuses me....
I don't know of any other band that exudes as much emotion as Manchester Orchestra does. I think that's why they're my favorite. I can tell they really love what they're doing.
I Watched andy preform this song live in front of only me and a couple of friends at lalapalooza, and he had a single tear running down his cheek. I asked him what helps him right his music, and he grabbed me by my shoulder and got really close and told me that it's " Living, Love and loss". and he gave me his guitar pick.. I consider me the luckiest man alive.. thank's andy, it means a lot.

ok, emo is just a trend. saying only other stupid cliches fit in is dumb because the stupid ass emo kid would fit in with other emo kids, stupid ass preps and stupid ass skaters and stupid as fuck gangsters would fit in with the other people who try to fit in so hard they resort to fitting a dumb social cliche. originality is dead. when u call yourself something like "emo" it means your going out of your way to fit the emo character. which is pathetic. oh and btw, this is a truly beautiful song.
alot of ppl call sad songs..emo songs. which makes me upset. society's just like that..i hate society. Now a days..people seem2be hating more on emos &&goths..well emos and goths are people2&&have real feelings. it seems like ppl only fit in if ur a prep, ganster, or skater..&&if ur not tht then your different&& people start hating on u...just because ppl are emo, scene, or goth..duz not make them different..i want the hatred to fucking stop!! its not cool to hate && make someone feel different

This song isn't emo. It's called being deep people, come on. Honestly, if you label every song with meaning as 'emo' then you might as well just go listen to some mainstream average song...
Manchester Orchestra is amazing, hands down, if you like it, you like it. If you don't like it, just don't leave a comment.
i hate to say it ut i have to dsagree, this song is emo, emo does of course mean Emotional, and well listen to his voice, you can clearly hear the emotion, emo doesnt have to be stereo typed in to some half vampire self hating genre, because its not, emo music is just music that has had alot of emotion put into it, it kind of upsets me that nowadays music genres are become more about the artists fashion sense, as on the same token, this is an emo song unlike most others.
@TGDgomer: well "emo" is a type of music [emotional] like you said, and the music influences the way you dress like all other music influences a certain trend. example: country influences cow boy hats and leather boots etc. so, when you say "emo" you can refer to a music genre, clothing style or someone who's very emotional.
@TGDgomer seriously? if that's the definition of "emo" then bach, led zeppelin, kanye west and taylor swift are all "emo." using that as a categorical term is like saying "oh this is rhythmic" music. well no shit.
@TGDgomer ...... Emo is short for Emotive Hardcore, which is a genre that came about in the late 80's - early 90's with bands such as Rights of Spring, Indian Summer, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, Envy and Circle Takes the Square. Although emo can and has been adapted to mean "emotional" by people who are not familiar with the scene that does not mean that this music falls into the "emo" genre.... It's just emotional.

@xxericxo maybe for you and me, but mainstream took the meaning of 'emo' and tore it into separate pieces, giving each piece a different meaning and ultimately spawning a lifestyle and stereotype (e.g. "emos cut themselves")
@TGDgomer No Emo is a a subgenre of punk, it has nothing to do with fashion sense. Whilst emo is generally linked the emotional or confessional lyrics, this is not 'emo'.
I love this song :) but I have to disagree with it not being emo, because it is. Though, nowadays it depends how you define emo. I just think emo songs are songs with a lot of emotion. Either way, this song is amazing and that's what its all about in the end :)
just so you guys know......im about to cry lol no still this song is cool and haters must die....you looked up the vid and watched it so why must you hate on it....get friends and maybe a hobby would do you some good k :P

im sorry, but this song is just god awful. i love manchester orchestra, and yes i understand it has a powerful meaning, but it just comes off as cliche. And, no offense to the singer, i think they shouldve added some instruments other than singing. My opinion: what this song lacks in music, it tries to make up for in emotion, but the emotion just comes off as weird. Good songs have both emotion and a strong music to back it. Bring on all the thumbs down that are going to come.
Y'know, with some signature screams from andy ,loud cymbals, hard-strummed guitars and a final lyrics to really make another masterpiece from Manchester Orchestra, Kinda like Colly Strings.
Christ.. it feels like the emotion punches you in the chest, knocking your air out, right from the beginning, and then keeps punching with every subsequent verse. Makes me honestly almost skip this song when it comes up; and that's probably how you know something is an amazing song.
@quietus5590, man I kind of feel the same way but not as if I am being punched. Their music is so honest, each word is truth even if you don't know what they mean. I love them.
Andy's been adding a little extra 'We sing hallilujah' bit on the end at gigs recently, I've got a video of the whole song when he did it, check my channel for it :)
the way they play this song, his voice...it just makes you want to close your eyes and hear nothing else. i would'nt mind hearing just their music. they never release songs that are meaningless or won't stir the listeners emotions. one of a kind band, would pay so much money to hear them live again.
just saw manchester orchestra live last night in belfast, where amazing. could've listened to them all night but they were just supporting biffy clyro. didn't play any of my fav songs though :( but were amazing! i lvoe this song, can anyone tell me exactly what its about?
can anyone tell me the song where he gets extremely emotional and cries out over and over? I'm sorry if that's vague I've just been searching forever but I forgot because it was so long ago

@TGDgomer i just need to say something: all music has emotion put in it. thats the whole point of music, to express emotion.
ponalu123 1 year ago
@TGDgomer No Emo is a a subgenre of punk, it has nothing to do with fashion sense. Whilst emo is generally linked the emotional or confessional lyrics, this is not 'emo'.

I love this song :) but I have to disagree with it not being emo, because it is. Though, nowadays it depends how you define emo. I just think emo songs are songs with a lot of emotion. Either way, this song is amazing and that's what its all about in the end :)

im sorry, but this song is just god awful. i love manchester orchestra, and yes i understand it has a powerful meaning, but it just comes off as cliche. And, no offense to the singer, i think they shouldve added some instruments other than singing. My opinion: what this song lacks in music, it tries to make up for in emotion, but the emotion just comes off as weird. Good songs have both emotion and a strong music to back it. Bring on all the thumbs down that are going to come.

man this is some depressing shit.
I just recently discovered this band and im wondering if this is what all those little "emo" kids listen to?
sergef313 2 years ago
not at all. This has real feeling to it. the Emo kids listen to crap that is just depressing for no reason and perpetuates their depression.

I was expecting a huge finale at the end,
Y'know, with some signature screams from andy ,loud cymbals, hard-strummed guitars and a final lyrics to really make another masterpiece from Manchester Orchestra, Kinda like Colly Strings.
But by the end I realized this is better,

Christ.. it feels like the emotion punches you in the chest, knocking your air out, right from the beginning, and then keeps punching with every subsequent verse. Makes me honestly almost skip this song when it comes up; and that's probably how you know something is an amazing song.
quietus5590 2 years ago 98
@quietus5590, man I kind of feel the same way but not as if I am being punched. Their music is so honest, each word is truth even if you don't know what they mean. I love them.

@quietus5590 I absolutly agree... Its just such a beautiful song.

Andy's been adding a little extra 'We sing hallilujah' bit on the end at gigs recently, I've got a video of the whole song when he did it, check my channel for it :)

Their (your) work is exceptinal. write a love ballad equal to this and youll need a manager.
*on a more personal note, the male vocals are as soothing as a mother to her baby. thanks 4 that

the way they play this song, his voice...it just makes you want to close your eyes and hear nothing else. i would'nt mind hearing just their music. they never release songs that are meaningless or won't stir the listeners emotions. one of a kind band, would pay so much money to hear them live again.
