It's also silly to compare S. Ossetia with Chechnya, cos Chechnya is a part of Russia and only Islamists didnt want that. Ossettia was always part of Russia (USSR) and resisted incorporation into Georgia in 1991. Ossetians are Russian citizens, as are Chechens, so Russia is right on both counts.

The Georgians shudder at this idea, that is why war appears increasingly likely.

Yes they are autonomous regions, but that dosen't mean much, for in every autonomous region, whether it be Tibet, Kashmir or Kosovo, the government still had/has the final say. The Georgians have long oppressed the citizens of these two enclaves, furthermore, when the USSR seperated, these two enclaves openly stated their desire to remain part of Russia. If Russia were to regain control of these regions, The Georgians believe that eventually the Russians might be encouraged to regain control.
