My brother and his Annie....This is their Song! I will remember this Song, connecting them as One, since I was a young girl!!! Romantic, Classic....The best memories ever!!!
This is one of the instances in which the remake was a bigger hit than the original. In 1967, Robert Knight's version peaked at #13. Seven years later, in 1974, Carl Carlton took his version to #6.
YES YES YES This is THE best version of this song. Most of the oldies stations play the stale Carl Carlton version. Listening to Carl vs. Robert is like comparing $3.95 wine with a fine Merlot - there is no comparison.
The writers of this great song - Buzz Cason and Mac Gayden - both performed at a show in Nashville last week and still sound excellent. They're both talented guys who have enjoyed super-successful careers.
Heard this was the song that was used by the Montauk Project as a brainwashing memory trigger out on Long Island NY at Fort (CAMP) Hero. Is it true? I do not know, but I can tell you that Fort Hero is an eerie place. One time my cousin heard something heavy jump down from a tree top and scurry off through the woods near the radar tower out there. It was about midnight, pitch black out. Normal animals do not jump out of trees at night and leap to the ground....
I keep wondering why i thought the song was nicer than what i had been hearing ..... yeah... this is the kind of celebratory feel that draws me to this song. I like!
I love this song! I was waiting for a lift outside a garage. There were two mechanics working on a car when this came on the radio. They both started dancing to it ... it was absolutely brilliant ... MMD ... will always be a great memory :)
Gloria Estefan's version was a huge pop/dance hit in 1995. In fact, it is still one of her best loved hits from the 90s. She gave a great feminine twist to this 60s classic!
Carlton made an important change to the harmonic structure which adds tension. Compare the melody/harmony on the line "I went away JUST WHEN YOU needed me so" between the two versions. Carlton sounds like he needs her love, but Robert Knight sounds like he's prepared to give his life for it. Absolutely sublime music.
@spankiek I think that the statement that "Carlton sounds like he needs her love" is even too strong. Carlton quite honestly sounds a bit insincere. I think a more accurate statement for Carlton is "your love would be nice, if you're willing to give it. If not, oh well." Knight sounds like he's completely serious and absolutely prepared to give the person that he is singing about TLC for a lifetime.
@MsMissile01 I agree! I heard Robert's version at a restaurant yesterday, and I had to check it out on YT. It's sounds so good! Here's to the original! Thanks for posting!!
this is by far the best version....carl carltons isnt so bad but this original has the emotion (not saying carlton's doesn't but knights version is more genuine, thats all). absolutely love this song!!!
One of the greatest songs ever recorded.

Really beautiful and amazing song. Reason for many of covers.
Versions from Jamie Cullum, Gloria Estefan & U2 are absoluely terrible - song is degraded.
Version of Carl Carlton & The Love Affair are neutral for me.
Robert knight is king knight - this original soul version is perfect...
...and that for me is nice version from Sandra, because I like genres Synthpop and New wave.

Wow, Vanilla Ice apperently stole the baseline for Ice Ice Baby. and Madona stole the chorus for Like a Prayer.

@AngeCord Listen to Under Pressure by Queen & David Bowie, Vanilla Ice *literally* stole the bassline from there...!
