i love this movie, and i love the music to it as well, this scene is the saddest part of the movie, it always makes me cry. i love keira knightley, she's so pretty and she always portrays her parts spectacularly
I appreciate everything Keira does. I'm just saying that there's no way this actually happened. You can't make someone happy if you are not happy yourself. If G stayed with those brats and gave up her happiness, she wouldn't have survived. She loved Eliza only. She had her purely out of love, apart from the other brats she had by mistake. I don't believe she gave up Eliza because no one forces a woman to give up her child.
Orlando, you can think what you like, but this is based on a real woman, and giving up Eliza and staying with her husband is what the duchess really did do. And she obviously loved her other children very much.
I just don't believe that anyone would just resign to a life of slavery and misery. She wasn't loved at all and treated like a slave by her husband and those poor excuses for children. I can't see why she would love children she 1. didn't want to begin with 2. prevent her from having love 3. Don't love her.
Why would she choose to stay a slave instead of taking Eliza and marrying Charles? Who was she benefitting? No one. I have to believe she got her freedom and happy ending.
I think it's impossible to force a woman to give up a child as the Duke did in the movie. No one can tell a woman "You have no right to raise this child because it's not mine" as the Duke told her. No woman would ever give up her child to complete strangers and I don't believe G did. Why would she love those other brats from the Duke? All they do is remind her of pain, especially the boy. Eliza was the only child she loved.
I think theres something missing in you. Regardless of the fact someone's partner treats them well or not, children are innocent from birth and they deserve to be loved. She loved all of her children, there was no doubt about that, its what kept her going. And yes, the Duke could have the power to force her to give up Eliza, so she didn't 'disgrace' him. Its what was done then unfortunately and it was obvious she lived in fear of him anyway.
Not the children of William Cavendish. They're rotten and I don't see y G would love them when she wasn't ready to be a mother. She was forced into it just as she was enslaved by her own mother, knowing she'd b miserable. Those children were just like their father and unworthy of love.
No one, Duke or pauper, has the right to force a mother to give up her child. I don't care what day and age you're living in. No one has the power to force a child from its mother's arms.
umm...kay let me clear some things up for you about this film and about history in general.
Rememeber that Gee was a duchess, and while you may think that running away with grey would be the most righteous thing to do, it definately wouldn't be
Firstly, it would be humiliating. You don't even know how much she would suffer if she ran away like that: more than she did with the duke.
Secondly, those other vhildren are HER children as well. You're saying she should give up THREE children?
If she really wanted to, she could've. Those aren't her children! Those are monsters! All they did was ruin her life and never let her have freedom. Charlotte was just a lucky brat that the Duke forced G to raise her. G would never have monsters. She had Eliza, her daughter. Those other kids were nothing.
OMG! I completely agree! With tyhe music aswell! Her acting was fantastic! I havn't yet experiences having children, but i could sooo feel the pain of being in that horrifoc possition! I couldn't stop crying!
her acting was amazing in this scene!! she portrayed it so well to the point where i could feel the pain of a mother having her child taken from her before her very eyes.
So great!! it made me cry! right along with this music :-)
Actually, she never did give up the baby. It was her daughter. The Duke has no right to make her give up her children and Bess can't either. They can't make G do anything. G ran away with Charles so they could raise Eliza. G only loved Eliza and never loved her other children. I don't see how she would love the others because they're not hers. They're the Duke's children and Bess was the wicked stepmother. Anyway, she stayed with Eliza and raised her.
I was referring to her in real life. I'm not convinced that she had to sacrifice her most beloved child for those 3 other brats. Hart didn't even acknowledge G. I don't see the point of her giving up the child she loves most for a life of being unloved by everyone.
hmm i am admittedly not well informed about her in real life so you have just inspired me to educate myself lol... but from the way the movie shows it... she is forced to choose between her child and the love of her life; to which she finally gives in and picks the child (her only child eliza) over her love
In real life she was married William Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire whom she hated. I believe that in reality she chose her true love Charles Grey and Eliza.

She wanted Charles. She loved him and she wanted love. I don't think it'd be so bad if she ran away with him. She needed freedom.
Those are the Duke's children, especially the boy and the Charlotte isn't hers. I think she should give up those 3 brats for Eliza.
orlandogirl213 2 years ago
Um, you're talking about this as though she's living in the 21st century.
Back then, people couldn't just "do" that.
Plus those are HER children! She raised charlotte as her own :P
