  • @gabber700

Do you offer a full size pattern for this armor? I used to belong to the SCA and once had patterns for all sorts of armor. But my ex left my patterns in a storage warhouse and mice destroyed my entire collection, so I have to start all over

  • awesome, wish i had the time and tools for that. great stuff

  • How much of each type of metal did you use?

  • Obviously disliked by the mongols.

  • where did you get the iron?

  • Excellent, great job

  • wow! verry nice! i like

please send scale of in format pdf for my!

    thanks!

  • How strong is 4130 alloy steel?

  • @255Knights

4130 is pretty strong. It is the alloy used in the steel tubing used in race car frames. If properly heat treated you could use a piece of 4130 that would act like a piece of mild steel that is twice or more thick.

  • I am thinking of making armor out of 4130 alloy steel. Or is it better I stick with 1065 or 1095 alloy steel?

  • roman legions for ever!

  • lol nice a paintball mask for protection.

    great video! good job

  • lorica hamata was better than segmentata..it allowed more freedom of movement lesser weight and it was produced easily...no wonder that late roman empire abandoned the segmentata and started to pruduce hamata!

  • Tbh Lorica segmentata was much more effective in protection than hamata, however Segmentata was more costly to produce and hamata used less materials. The late roman empire abandoned segmentata due to money issues.

If chainmail was worn under the segmentata the legionaries might have been a brick wall.

  • Yes you are right.Money issues made segmentata be abandoned.

  • Well the romans did use chainmail, so maybe they did, afterall they did conquer half the world

  • They conquered msot of the known world during to their use of Segmentata (chainmail was switched to later, yknow when they got crushed), and more importantly, the tactics they used called for very heavily armored troops to basicly walk over enemies (use of the scutum shield and making large, dense formations)

  • They were crushed due to the fact that they lacked leadership of the Emperors of that time. And lets not forget their awesome use of siege weapons like the ongar for example!

  • @effigyoflight Except that the Lorica Segmentata didn't come until after the time of Julius Ceasaer, his legions wore chain and did farily well I think you would admit.

  • @effigyoflight Well, the cost of producing segmentata was lesser than in hamata at first, if we speak about a time to make a one. Secondly late empire abandoned segmentata mainly becouse of its unreliability, and due to change in general tactics of army. Third, the question of efectivnes of each type of armor is still in dispute, becouse same have better protection but are unreliable (like segmentata).

  • @effigyoflight And at the end try to imagine legionary with both segmentata and hamata on, together thei would weight 13 to 17 kg , and due the internal structure of segmentata is from the leathr strapes, and the hamata is from iron rings , it would be like using sandpaper. In the end the leather stripes would be teard apart and segmentata cant stay i none piece without them.

  • @effigyoflight The segmentata was very unorthodox, and that's probably what gave the Legions a lot of their strength. I mean, where EXACTLY are you supposed to hit the legionary to get through the armor, and with what? The arms, legs and neck were the only weakness, and the shield covered most of the first two. The neck was protected by an extension of the helmet after the campaigns in Dacia, so they were more or less a very maneuverable wall.

  • @AlexThePrivate Im sorry but you are wrong, atleast partly. Segmentata allowed more freedom of movement then hamata. Hamata was heavier than segmentata (hamata 7-10kg segmentata 5-7kg ). And in the end the matter of poduction, yes, it is easier to make hamata and you can use less qualified personal to make it. And late empire doesnt abandoned segmentata, thei nearly abandoned hamata es well, becouse of the money problems they had. :)

  • My cusion owns a lerica segmentata.

  • Excellent wok!

  • I have made several loricae by hand using the same hand tools, with few exceptions. This video is great for showing how it can be done.

  • several! jeez, u in reenacting then?

  • Yes, I'm a reenactor now, but long before that I was an armourer.

  • this is for reenacting duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • lorica segmenta was only used commonly for less than 2 centuries, Romans generally wore lorica Hamata and later on Squamata.

    Stop believing hollywood noobs

  • lol.. only 2 centuries.. lol.. that's 200 years.. in the last 200 years.. how has armour evolved.. lol.

  • Rome (Eastern) lasted about 100 years. The Segmenta was worn for 200-300. It was also worn during the hightime of Augustus and Julius Ceaser. The armor you mentioned that was used later on was mainly Byzantine and late East Roman. So it is permissible to use the Segmenta.

  • you are wrong. Squamata was unpopular with the Roman infantry. Squamata was more popular with the auxillary archers, as it allowed greater freedom of movement.

  • squamata was worn in the early republic by the centurions, archers, cavalry and even some legionaries wore it,maybe unpopular but it was cheaper then lorica hamata or the leather armor

  • i agree, i just wanted to make clear that lorica squamata was mainly for 'specialist units' (ie, centurions, optios, archers, etc.) NOT for the standard legionary.

  • history can only tell us what we can find out we really dont know.

  • Could you be persuaded into making a video of how to make the hinge interlocking part, not just the shaping of the outside? I am having the most trouble with it, and since you are very good, I would be very interested in seeing that.

  • Nice, I made a junk Lorica out of zinc and strips of leather, but this one is a true work of art. I bow to your skill.

  • Ha I can do you one worse lol! I'm making one out of cardboard and vinyl leather!

  • If you can get stiffened vinyl, then you could probably make one that's better than mine.

  • As someone who makes tactical gear, I know what you're going through. Keep up the good work :)

  • Magyar vagy? Hol van a műhelyed?

  • szeva!

A Kazincbarcikai fegyverkészítő fórumán én is fent vagyok..(dominant néven)További sok sikert!

  • what type of metel did you uses? and what gauge was it?

  • 18 gauge = .040" = 1 mm iron (if you want you can do it from 14 gauge too)

18 gauge = .040" = 1 mm brass for lacing loops and other brass work

    20 gauge = .032" = 0.8 mm brass for hinges

  • Thanks!

  • Jólvan Gabber,így tovább,grat! ;)

  • Köszi!
