On 12 May 1969, Fairports van crashed on the way home from a gig in Birmingham. Martin Lamble just 19 years old and Jeannie Franklyn, guitarist Richard Thompsons girlfriend, were killed. Farewell, Farewell is a tribute to the bands fallen friends: Farewell, farewell to you who would hear/You lonely travellers all/The cold north wind will blow again/The winding road does call.
Well story has it that Richard Thompson wrote it to his Mother on leaving home to make his life as a folk singer at 17 as himself and father didn't get on.
"Cut the cloth" means bit your tong, "drink the light " means bide your time and "Swear a year" means as it says give it another year.
Its a conversation between him and his mother yes as you say a very emotinal track and Dennys voice at its best God rest her
Beautiful. And Sandy not only had a lovely voice, she was also a fine songwriter. Her composition "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" is brilliant; it has long been one of my favorites. (BTW, YouTube is a real treasure; it makes it possible for great performers to live on for new generations to enjoy. Thank you, DaveyEss for uploading this.)
dear cluntslave, if you really believe 'liege and lief' is "the greatest british folk album ever",then i feel really sorry for you, because nothing could be further from the truth.try listening closely to 'hark! the village wait' by steeleye span.that album has never been given the recognition it deserves. it's in a league of it's own.the arrangements for the folk songs really stand out.
@DaveyEss I saw both Fairport and Steeleye in their primes, I accept that Steeleye did not get as much credit from cognoscenti as Fairport, but they had more commercial success and my heart will always be with Fairport.
.! ..i'll listen to it and give you my opinion but i still think [ personal opinion ] that 'liege and lief' is possibly THE best folk album ever....pending.....thanks for the comments man!
to:datfunk69,it isn't the power of music,it is the magic and beauty of sandy denny's crystal clear vocals that make this track stand out.this is the only track i listen to on "liege & lief".
truly sensational, this always brings a tear to my eyes, and this constantly sends shivers down my spine!!!!!!!!!! The power of music, is like no other! Makes life worth living when you hear such beauty!
...first heard this on 'lieg and lief' in 85' and fell instantly in love with the whole album. A relationship that has stayed eternal and has never dimished in intensity.... as people have said before 'the greatest british folk album EVER!
I am 22 yrs old, and have been a lifelong fairport and richard thompson fan. A few years ago I bought the original lp of liege and lief album and framed it upon my wall. I had to track down a second copy because I had gotten tired of taking it out of its frame every time I wanted to play it. (my record player uses, you can't beat the sound; this album demanded the warm sound of the vacuum tubes on my rebuilt hifi.)
I also have this framed and hanging on my wall, and Full House as well. Both are my original copies from the 60's-70's,and I'm impressed that a person of your age has the same appreciation for this music. I also have a second vinyl copy of Full house framed but with the sleeve opened for the large picture. I still listen to these albums endlessly but on cd because I don't have a working record player.Never tire of listening to them, and never miss RT when he is in my area.
I have seen thompson 14 times. I live in milwaukee, so If he comes to the michigan\chicago\minnesota area on tour, I can usually count on seeing him a couple of times. He has an all request show in san fransisco in december as well as a protest song show at the same venue the same week. I just booked my plane tickets.
Yes, I will be at 2 Thompson shows in December, one in the North Bay and one of the all request shows in the South Bay. The request shows are really unique.
Sweet sorrow.

I cannot believe the ignorance nor the lack of sensitivity. These are people, loved by people. Don't be so rude.

Loathe and love are very different. I've seen that mistake in lyrics sites too often.
I LOVE this song.

@AdamsApple1963 Most sensible comment by a mile.

Lyrics now edited as there were mistakes. Great comments, but to me the lyrical content remains mysterious, mostly because of this verse:
And will you never return to see
Your bruised and beaten sons
O I would,I would if welcome I were
For they loathe me every one.
It's a heartbreaking "good-bye" for sure.

On hearing and reading the lyrics, I don't really understand what the song is saying:
'cut the cloth', 'drink the light, 'swear a year' ?
Maybe it is intentionally written in a way that is not to be understood?
The emotion though _does_ come across.
Such a strong musical poem.

Grow up! Every single human being has their own favourites, likes & dislikes. It's a matter of personal preference not a competition.
